Im going through the new Gamepass games and saw that NBA2k24 was added. I figured I would give it a try since I havent played an NBA game in years. That is until I saw the space required.

166GB. Am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous? Theres no way they couldnt condense that to be far less. I have plenty of space but Im not devoting that much space to a NBA game

I don't get why they don't make high quality models / textures a seperate download at least. They could cut the file size by heaps, and it wouldn't matter to people playing on lower-res displays or who just don't care that much about graphics.

...downside being you just know sooner or later someone's gonna start charging for it. Which would be fine if the base game was a bit cheaper, but we all know that won't happen.

It's amazing that a basketball game that looks that dog shit & plays the same as the last 5 of them, can have storage size rivaling FF7 Rebirth that is incredible graphics wise.

You would think after you download a game in full, you could compress or zip it to conserve space somehow

Western devs don't seem to compress their games anymore, resulting in the inane game file sizes you're seeing now.

Compared to a game like Smash Ultimate, a game chock-full of content, which is only around 13.6 GB for its base game.

Also even though I have plenty of space, I did not download and do plan to just as a matter of principle. I should not have to leave a game to download overnight unless for exception cases.

A damn basketball game is not an exceptional case. I more or less know what it's gonna be like.

Horizon Forbidden West took up like 125gb on my PC.

Seriously, there shouldn't be SSDs under 4 TB at this point and the fucking prices need to come down. It sucks still having to delete games with 2 TB. And I don't have many games installed. $300 for a 4 TB m.2 is some year 2000 type pricing for storage.

If you don't want to fork out for a larger SSD, get a large HDD and store games you aren't playing currently on there.

No, the way is having a file server or NAS with 20+ TB of RAID storage and backing up games on there. Though I dont do that because I have Gigabit Ethernet so its honestly just as quick to download them again without taking up a lot of space.

I would never put a HDD anywhere near a desktop PC.

Smash ultimate is also a switch game that does not have high-end textures or audio.

while file sizes are getting big, it's not like you don't have options to manage them. on the high-end consoles you can upgrade them with addition SSD storage or you can use an external storage device to store games you are currently not playing and copy them back to the internal drives when you do, which is faster that redownloading/re-installing.

I wouldn't be surprised.

Thats partially the thinking I used to NOT uninstall games I felt there was SOME chance I might pick back up soon. I didn't want to uninstall a 50 plus gb game if I am going to wanna play it again soon and have it hit my data cap. I don't buy micro so this didn't help game companies. It actually hurt them. I passed up sales knowing I am not even going to be able to install the game now.

Luckily competing with 5g made my ISP drop data caps.

Still, this is one weird example of how 360 PS3 gen actually had it better than the last 2 gens in at least this way. You didn't even NEED the internet then. Now, unless you want to do tons of waiting you better have the best internet around. Meanwhile no cap unless you're NEVER going to exceed the cap.

It'd plug and play. You basically just add more internal storage on top of the 600 something usable GB it comes with. (The PS5s default SSD is soldered into it so it can't be removed).

This is the one I bought:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0B2FSKTHK?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Probably got to wait for another sale since it went back up from when I got it in october.

Over 200 gigs just between those three. Much more and I'm going to be investing in an additional (and certainly larger) SSD.

That is unironically a legitimate case. As long as Western, especially American Internet infrastructure is poor they'll do any means to have people play their games longer and buy their DLC. Never underestimate the lengths companies will go to get more money.

Textures. Most have 3-4 main channels, (RGB and sometimes A) frequently with a second texture for normal mapping, which would be three more. Frequently with more textures for (eg) wet/dry, damaged, etc.

Meanwhile, 4k resolution is 4x as big as 1080p, 9x as big as 720p, 18x as big as 360p, etc.

And there's also the thing where everything has like a bajillion skins today.
