Its no weirder than some sports fan communities. Just let people have fun and stop worrying about what looks weird.

This. No one bats an eye when a grown man dresses up as a football player and talks a lot about the details of their favorite team and recent games.

If you're a fan of something: sports team, movie franchise, video game, novelist, porn star, whatever.

And you absolutely cannot deal with any mockery whatsoever without lashing out and feeling personally attacked.

You need to have a word with yourself.
"If you're mocked and bullied, it's your fault for being offended"

Good to know that our supposed morals all go out the window once we encounter someone who likes something we don't.

How about we shut the fuck up and never judge anyone who isn't hurting anyone?

I literally don't even own HP memorabilia. I played Hogwarts Legacy and occassionally don't turn off a HP movie for 20 minutes the ten billion times they are on.

This being Harry Potter doesn't somehow justify inconsistency. Either we mock all "childish" hobbies and fandoms or none. Picking and choosing proves "being childish" is not the actual problem.

Except what happened was that she said she thought Harry Potter weddings were a bit weird, and you responded by calling her 'joyless' and 'miserable' before proceeding to equate her actions with fascism.

Only if you view the word as exclusive to very serious issues like racism, homophobia, transphobia.

Calling people children and weirdos for liking a thing you view as pathetic is absolutely a lack of tolerance, even if it isn't literally a physically dangerous issue.

And it's weird that we are cool with it.

Sure. Maybe she's gotten better but I distinctly remember her defending JK Rowling and saying fans' ire had been misplaced and that she admired her. If she's changed that, then good.

Also, doing the bare minimum and calling by the people by their correct pronouns (that she thinks are wrong) because she thinks it makes us happy doesn't impress me one bit.

Are yall really equating a themed wedding to a personality trait? Cuz that's what it sounds like your doing. For one it's not. Lots of people have themed weddings. Yall gonna say the same to someone having a soccer or football themed wedding? I like Miriam but in this case she should have kept her mouth shut.

I'm conflicted. One one hand, as others have said already, there's nothing wrong with being a fan or even a big fan of something, but when you make being a fan a part of your entire life and/or personality, it's odd. I love lots of things, but I wouldn't have a wedding or other important event in my life revolve around one of them.

On the other, if it doesn't really hurt anybody, let people enjoy it. Let them be "weirdos" or whatever. At least they have something to enjoy in life.

A wedding is not a marriage. A Harry Potter themed wedding doesn't mean every day of their lives is Harry Potter themed. A wedding is just a party and if theming makes it even more fun for the couple then they should absolutely theme it. The only cautionary tale is it's a party you'll want to look back on and any theme can become cringe a decade later looking back.

I'd absolutely theme a wedding if I gave a fuck about marriage.

It's odd to try to tell people to completely separate their hobbies and interests from their life. It's like mocking someone for theming their office. Are they interests or merely distractions from life?

Same. It's not a hobby I would engage in, and I don't quite understand it, so by definition it is weird to me. But that's fine! I'm also into shit that other people would consider weird. I think people will quickly equate the term "weird" with "loser" or similar, but I don't see the harm in it personally

I agree. If it's not Harry Potter then it's something else. Disney, Marvel, Fashion dolls, Video Games, Wrestling, Fashion...

Although, given that Harry Potter and its author are inseparable, wanting to have a Harry Potter themed wedding is definitely going to raise a red flag.

The line between fan and a "weirdo" is one drawn by each individual because it's subjective. Most of the time, if you don't care or dislike the thing the other person likes; you're more incline to think its weird that they like the thing you dislike and/or don't care for. Now not everyone's this judgemental, but I'll admit I used to be this way when I was younger but I also believe it's a mentality you can grow out of easily...imo.

I used Nintendo Adult as an example in my previous post because last week I went to a Mario theme reception for a wedding for one of my highschool friends. I got placed to sit next to a coworker of my friend and she made the comment "isn't it fucking weird, why couldn't be pick something normal as a theme for his wedding or something?" It was obvious she was trying to break the ice, but it does back up my point on what people will find acceptable and what people will find weird.

She's just an old-school adult who thinks it's peculiar for grown people to fixate on "childish" things. I get it. Hell, wasn't that long ago that we saw it as odd if an adult still watched cartoons. I went to middle school in the early 2000s and got made fun of for watching Dragon Ball Z, lol. It's now more socially acceptable for adults to maintain interest in entertainment meant for kids. But essentially her comments are equivalent to poking fun at someone's foot fetish. From her perspective, it's just amusingly unusual.

Sure. That was kind of my point. You can call JK Rowling a transphobe and a piece of shit. We don't need to go "lolol you're a cringy weirdo for liking kiddie shit!"

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

But why? What is funny about people liking something you don't? Why laugh at what you don't get? Clearly I am fine with being weird since I can't comprehend this "normal" behavior.

While its not my taste, I generally wont neg on anyone engaging in nerdom with their own life in that way. However, making nerdom-themed high-profile events like weddings require a lot of effort to look good as opposed to tacky. Anyone can have a cheap wedding and people understand that weddings are expensive and people do what is within their means. Adding a fandom to that then risks a layer of just looking like a bad version of the theme. Like, if everyone at the Star Wars wedding looks like theyre an extra on set, thats going to be amazing. If everyone looks like they came out of a Spirit Halloween, its going to look like trash.

Now, Ill judge adult Harry Potter fans for supporting the work of a living transphobic creator (When the artist is dead, theres less need to worry the death of the artist imo), but thats specific to the fandom. Otherwise, just have a good production value do youre doing anything fancier than a Halloween party.

How many people have ever seen something like the latter? When they go "lol you're an adult playing video games", they're laughing at adults owning and playing video games, and then likely turning around and watching hours of Netflix and/or sporting events.

Honestly, I think anyone who goes with the stock church-and-here-comes-the-bride wedding is a bit 'weird'. Do something that showcases the people that're getting hitched's identities or interests or anything to make it a unique and memorable experience. Why do so many people get to what's supposed to be this special one-of-a-kind day in their lives and go "Y'know what? Let's do the exact same thing everybody else is doing." Boring.
