A proper adventure with plenty of silliness and good characterisation, some good level design in there too, and the battle system loop with synergy abilities and limits is excellent; a real step-up from Remake which I already enjoyed. The OST is up there with the best I've ever heard; the range and quality, and how it's deployed, is quite extraordinary - must be one of the biggest soundtrack projects undertaken for a single release (i.e. excluding MMO expansions). I even enjoyed the mini-game spam and forgave some of the wacky control schemes - Queen's Blood and Chocobo Racing were superb. It reminds me what these party-based RPG/adventure games can be, and could still be in the future. I really love nothing more than engrossing myself in a good one. But it comes with (Ending Spoilers) ~~butchery of the most iconic scene in FF.~~ The way it missed makes me think about the nature of modern popular culture and how the dynamics around it facilitate so much more interest in what a work could mean than how it is what it is. The original scene was a blunt whack over the head which even the most unobservant player could understand - sword through the heart; death; rage; mournful music; swift battle; funeral; move on. They ignore that altogether and do something that would never have been executed as it has been in the 90s. SE tried to remake FFVII with the 21st century's technology, but they've also remade it as a work of popular fiction to appeal to the world of online fandoms, which changes it much more (and, IMO, for the worse). There's definitely a better way of articulating what I'm getting at. Also there's some serious jank in a section in Chapter 11 which particularly frustrated me. The game would have benefitted from a good editing job plus performance and UI refinements. Yeah if you do the math I've basically been doing nothing else the past 11 days... didn't even do the final sidequests because I wanted to beat the game/see the ending. Loved this game and you can tell it was made with a lot of care. Loved most of the changes they made (Costa del Sol best chapter??), they nailed all the characters, like it was just a constant joy throughout... for the most part. I hid all Rebirth topics so I'll probably go unhide and read through them sometime soon, interested in seeing people's experience and whatnot & as people continue to make their way through something so mammoth especially relative to Remake. Want to get my fresh thoughts down right now that maybe i'll take back later (but maybe not) (full game and ending spoilers) First, fuck that fucking final boss sequence. Like every phase of the sequence had something wrong with it, but especially the last part made me so damn mad. And it's one thing in Remake to have a variable final boss where 2 of your 3 teammates can show up, but you cannot properly outfit 6 side characters on a first playthrough. Looking forward to buying and maxing out a ton more materia in newgame+!! Man I really really loved this game until it went off of a fucking cliff starting with the Gold Saucer date where I got Red XIII. Like that's what I get for being nice to everybody and doing all sidequests, I dont remember doing anything particularly nice for Red but checking the final playlog and he had 92% to 89% for Tifa, damn. Then the Temple was extremely tedious and not-fun? not what you would like to see in a final dungeon?? and then everything really felt rushed towards the ending. ~~Overall loved the game so much, it's just frustrating that everything from the Temple onwards being not great, has me feeling down on the whole experience when I was flying high for like, 108 hours.~~ Well looking forward to replaying, looking at the trophy list to see what I missed out on, and start the 4 year countdown for the next game... ideally not longer than that and hell I'd take it sooner! <cite>MartinFF7 posted [p:979302501] in Final Fant...
