Generally speaking, yeah it's worth it. AFAIK you only get one unit of every type and you definitely have no reason, beyond personal ones, to not get more than one of the super relevant unit types. Like, you don't really need a second Lex running around but Cavalry are good enough that having a fifth Clive wouldn't be too shabby. You also get the advantage of being able to set their stats immediately, instead of using an expensive item, and many of the unique characters have kind of bad growth choices (though none bad enough that they actively harm you clearing stuff).

Alright good to know. I have recruited some others like hoplites and those barbarians, was just wondering if I should hold out. Sounds like I'm gonna go get some gryphon knights! And set up a magical unit! Hoplites rock in the front row. And good god the cavalry is absurd. I have Clive jacked up with high crit and focused on hitting lowest HP enemies and he ends up just killing everything since he gains AP after killing something.

Yeah I think I've sorta got it figured out by now. What I'd done was the first 2 tutorial/story missions, then the archer sidequest (which freed up another town I didn't have the resources to rebuild yet) and then I wandered until I found that angel mission and got whooped

Now that I've done other missions and wandered around a bit more, I realize the idea here is that I could have explored for resources and rebuilt the town (which would probably get me to D rank) before actually attempting to fight anything. But I was sort of interpreting the game as the sort of thing where you just press ahead constantly and maybe every so rarely you go back to all the towns you forgot about and fix them all up. when really I should be making an effort to level them up before combat missions
Yeah, this is very much not a "run forwards" style game. It even makes sense as a major part of the point of the story is that you are trying to build your "peasant army" by rebuilding the nation to topple the guy that burnt it to the ground.

Nah, the localization is great. There hasn't been a single change that anyone has ever brought up that isn't the most petty chud nonsense, it's all just "I don't know Japanese but I must whine" level stuff.

Go for it! (b ' ')b

Just keep in mind not to go too overboard as you have limited resources initially so spending it all on mercs can hit you on other things (such as promotions). Mercs are great, but there is definitely a level of resource management that has to be done.

My biggest issue is using my honor for more squads and upgrading them to contain more. I have to stop cause I have so many squads that I don't use most of them during battle cause it takes too long to get the valor and I'd rather use the valor for abilities.

I also have no issues with the localization, it seems great so far.

Ah, whoops. Was like, how can I get an angel that soon?!

I don't even have Gryphon Knights yet. Is it worth it to recruit people or should I just wait until I get the named people?

I just want to add to this: Gryphon Knights may be the single most broken unit in the game. So long as you know how to make them always target the back row (simple with the right tactics usage), and keep them away from their hard counter, they will fuck up just about anyone on the field, AND they ignore terrain obstacles. Honestly, they can even mess up archers if they target them correctly and quickly enough.

Ochlys wishes she was as good as a Gryphon Knight. Somehow, the Wyvern Knights are much, much less awe inspiring by comparison.

By now I'm at lvl 20 missions, my lvl advantage became a bit smaller by now.

Using 8 squads.
2 with 5 people
6 with 4 people

Using 34 people total, not a single recruit (except for a small time using a common griffon rider, because I got them before the unique named ones). I try to mostly use one per class, except for cleric (duh), swordfighters (I like both of them too much so far) and Great Knight.

Still have 2 to 3 NPCs on the bench I want to use as soon as my honor allows me to upgrade the other squads, and I'm sure I will get some others in the meantime.

Then it will be time to open the last two unit slots, and kick some old people out.

I can't wait to see what kind of makeups people use. So far I've found thieves in the front line with a hoplite in the back for extra guarding has been absurdly good. Toss in an archer and a witch and it's just a power house.

What goes well with gryphon knights? I am thinking a soldier would be good for some healing and poking. So far, I haven't found anything useful for warriors. Mordon or whatever is excessively meh so far.

My favorite unit is Yahna + Auch (armed with that rod that blasts the entire enemy team if at least one target is burning at the end of battle) + Hodrick + Renault. They absolutely make opposing units into meat paste, and even the anti-mage cavalry have a hard time standing up to them.

I got Alain's unit as: Virginia + Alain + Melissandre + Scarlett. Capable of both tanking and taking out fliers and thieves, this unit is powerful. As expected.

I also really like Lex (woth the healing sword) + Chloe + Travis + Berengaria. I used to use Berenice in place of Berengaria, but once I saw how awesome Berengaria (and that she was Travis' sister) I couldn't help but out her on this team. Normally I use Lex to guard the home base, but now I've been sending him forward and he's just great. Such a tanky frontline, I think I'm going to add a Cleric to this team later to make them unbeatable.

I doubled down on Joseph being a Cav unit and paired him with Clive and Alvin, with the Shaman in the back. I have yet to have an encounter where they didn't almost kill the enemy, if not outrighting them.

I pair my Gryphon Knight with the named one you get for story progression (I forget her name). I also pair her with the Fighter Colm and a hired witch. I use this unit often and they just absolutely wreck 99% of units they encounter.

Ochlys is paired with her Cleric girlfriend (you cannot convince me otherwise DAMMIT), and the Rose Knight Warrior and anti-mage cavalry chicks (again, I forget their names). I intend to add the other anti-mage cavalry chick to this unit when I expand it to 5 so I can have a true mage-killing team.

If you'd like, I can show what I got all in all when I get home from work. I honestly think that I may have to up the difficulty now (I'm one step below Expert) since my teams are so good.

I have Alain + Clive + Aubin and they are my killer team that just reks everything.

I am using Auch + Selvie + Hordick and they also just dominate the world. Most I have is one squad of 4 which is Travis + Rolf + hired Hoplite + hired Soldier. Been working out very well. Might swap the soldier for Nina.

It's fun just coming up with units. Get the feeling when I get to the second region I'm just going to wipe everyone and start fresh.

I've been experimenting a lot with groups. Still early in the game. Running Travis in fr mid, Alain tr left, and Lex in tr right.

Travis protects the whole group pretty much. I have him set up with poison for heavy and sap for whoever has most ap. Alain is our damage. He protects Lex from back row hitters. Lex protects Travis from trueshot on hunters. It's a pretty good triangle.

Once we get into bigger fights with 6 houscarl I'm sure I'll need to change up the Travis triangle.

My other groups need some work.

Gryphon knights are weak to arrows so use fighters with arrow guard in the back row.

They're also really good with sell swords because being able to fly somewhere and summon warriors is OP as shit lol

Warriors are really really really good at beating up the heavy armor units even better than magic. They also have a good field skill for destroying barricades and land traps.

@Karovorak , what are your teams looking like? Who does what?

@Xenogears15 .

Honestly, I didn't went in with much concept at all, just fixing stuff here and there.

Using no names to avoid spoiler stuff.

1) Team -
Alain (High Lord)
Legionnaire
Sniper
Great Knight.

Tanky against physical, and decent dmg against a lot of things, but no heal/dispel.

2)
Rogue
Doom Knight
Sergeant
Druid
Gryphon Master

One of my 2 5 people units. Destroys rows, and doesn't get destroyed usually. Poison (Rogue) and Dark Flame (Doom Knight) help a lot to kill the beefy enemies too, but enemy healers are a pain.

3)
Viking
Prince
Berserker
Sorceress
Bishop

The other 5 party now, added with a Prince. No idea how they are going to fare now. They were pretty bad except for the magical assist and Valor skills, so I buffed them just now.

3)
Vanguard
Wyvern
Warlock
Bishop

Pretty straight forward. Again, burn stuff for nice dmg, and stun with thunder and shield bash. Protect and CC on one side, heal and burn away on the other.

End fight with Fire Burst. Boom

5)

Paladin
Shieldshooter
Landsknecht
Elven Archer

Somehow doesn't work that good anymore. It's tanky, but that's it. Probably going to replace the Paladin soon to try something else.

6)
Feathersword
Sainted Knight
Swordmaster
High Priestess

Sometimes does crazy dmg, sometimes does zero as soon as the enemy has some shields in front. Oops. Changing tactics could help, I think the issue is that sometimes the team is more busy healing each other instead of attacking.

7)

Great Knight
Swordmaster
Valkyria
Elven Augur

MVP team that just trashes everything. Has some problems if they take my backline out.

8)
Dark Marquess
Swordmaster
Bishop
Breaker

Just as team 7.

Hit hard, break things, hope they don't attack my bishop

I did some mockup FFA, and the results were mostly equal, with two team lacking far behind, but that was before lvl 20 and before everyone was promoted.

Probably should do some mockup battles against each other again soon.

I just noticed that only one of "At the start of battle" abilities start per team.

I wanted to start my battle with a "+20 init buff" and a "stun shit out of a row" (two different characters) but it only activates the one with the higher initative.

My plans are broken, and now I have to check if I have the same problem somewhere else without me ever noticing it.

EDIT:

also, my team 8 is now full on crazy.

Still the same, but the combination of "Swordsmaster deals fast dmg against light armor, Breaker deals late heavy dmg against EVERYTHING" is just crazy.

Marquess carries her more than just her weight too, but I think she could be replaced by others too.

Promote them all.

200 honor for the 4->5 upgrade is a lot compared to the cost of only ~30 honor for the average promotion. 6 promoted people should have far more value than a single extra slot in a squad.

Also, promote the MC ASAP.

Came home, and just played 2 hours only in the fort doing mock up battles doing SCIENCE.

everyone against everyone, looking for faults and errors, writing notes, adjusting gear for obvious flaws and tactics too..

It wasn't perfectly balanced because most of my teams are still 4 units, and some are already level 25 (for the next skill) and others are not, but my strongest team is still a 4 unit team.

Biggest lesson of the story:

Breaker is broken.

Because maybe some people don't want my advanced scientific knowledge to break their game. Pun intentend.

I truly wrote quite some notes together, but I think I should truly try it out again when everyone is lvl 25 to have the same amount of skills.

Some stuff worked great, some equipment too, some stuff didn't work at all and needs some touches. Overall, more surprises than expected, especially because one of my most solid PvE units (I would say 2nd best overall), ended up only 6th place out of 8. (yes, I even wrote score for wins, kills, deaths and loses).

I've got together a team that seems nigh invincible using Rogue and Dark Marquess w/theif mantle as front liners. They can shred cavalry units who are supposed to be the counter to infantry units. I've got the Legionnaire in the back row to deal with true strike units. Needs better defense against magic but seems like nothing can touch this team.

Data plz

So, here my general notes.

First of all, what I noticed:
PvP and PvE is wastly different.
Teams great in PvE suddenly suck in PvP. I think that's mostly because my teams usually have some kind of heal/support in there.

Matched every team against everyone else, and gave scores.
+1 for win, +1 extra for every enemy killed and -1 for the lose and deaths just the same.
If a win with 3 people killed and 2 dying, it was a +2 (+1 win, +3 kills, -2 deaths).

These tests were not that clean. Sometimes I tried a bit arround mid-experiment, sometimes I changed stuff, and most off all: Some teams are only 4 members, some are 5, some are above level 25 with new skills, some don't, and 25 can change a lot for some classes.

But still, here my teams and notes from today.

team 1
High Lord
Legionnaire
Sniper
Great Knight

the physical wall is STRONG. Pure protection
The great knight has the "watchman longspear" for "Eagle eye".
Eagly Eye + Pile Thrust == 3 true strike hits (on lowest phys def).
This just instakills every rogue, swordmaster, elvish fencer daring to stand in the front row.

Sniper alone is not strong enough to take the backline down at all, but still decent.

High lords initative buff seems strong too, but... maybe not on this team.
Struggled against magic dmg (obviously), and breaker in the backrow (hard)

Also struggled with wiping the enemy. a few kills, yes, but stomping them? never.
They won more than they lost, but they lost harder than they won.

Total score: +2

Team2
Rogue
Doom Knight
Sergant
Druid
Gryphon Master

Great.
Giving the rogue the Power belt for toughness was probably the best idea I ever had.
This fixes a lot of the issues true strike gives him, and even protects him from multihits.
No idea if Shadowbite is worth 2 AP.

But it doesn't matter. Druid + Doom Knight combo kills everything in the front they can, and Gryphon master and Sergant simply kill the rest.
Had BIG problems if the tank (rogue) still died in turn 1, but this happend only once against team 8.

Total score: +9

Team3
Prince
Viking
Berserker
Sorceress
Elven Augur

Also insane.

Init buff from prince + Elven Augur + Guard Hunter on Sorceress = a dead tank before they can act.

But even with focus sight they all need glasses.
Row dmg of viking and berserker is great, single target is part of the casters job.
If there is 3 people row, I use Sylphic wind instead as an opener.

Boom. Kills whatever it sees. Back row, front row, tank or not, doesn't matter.
Was also the only team that beat MVP team 8.

+11

Has no way of protecting the back line. oops.

Team4
Vanguard
Wyvern Knight
Warlock
Bishop

Probably the most equal team all around. Struggled a lot.
Backrow protection from Vanguard, aoe dmg from Wyvern Knight and Warlock with fire breath and lightning bolt sounds nice on paper, Burn and Stun as needed, protection and heal is also there. But the true synergy wasn't there.

Dispell and heal hurt them a lot, and I have A LOT of dispell and heal in my teams.

Fire and lightning didn't work as good as the druid/doomknight, and they didn't had the burst of other teams. I may be able to min/max this a bit so the row aoe is simply nuking their backline, or maybe I can use the dragoon spear for more burst.

-8.

Team 5
Shieldshooter
Landsknecht
Elven Fencer
Elven Archer
Elven Sibyl

uuuugh... This team needs work, and mostly the elven fencer.
For having 5 people it's terrible

it has no skills protecting others, and the fencer relies too much on dodge RNG. Probably going to buy a power Belt for Toughness too.
It just doesn't work so far. It gets destroyed too fast, and doesn't deal enough dmg.

Level 25 should fix some stuff.

Still a big plus:
Shieldshooter with quickbow.
Rapid Shot and Quick reload trigger before the fight starts, Heavy bolt in turn 1 hits hard too.
Focus on "lowest physical def" and be happy.
Probably should give her a +1 AP pendant, so she can fire something else in turn 2 too.

Sibyil gives nice support.
I just need a better idea for the elven archer and elven fencer.

total score: -11

Team 6
Feathersword
Sainted Knight
Swordmaster
High Priestess

pretty defensive team, and it shows.
Never won a single match, but usually didn't lose that hard.
Still, needs a lot of work, and needs damage even more.

I also don't get the healing tactics to work as I want.
It felt like I healed when I should deal damage, and dealt dmg when I should heal.
Swordmaster alone is just not enough here.

score: -15. worst team. But again, lvl 25 and 5th member may change things.

Team 7:

Great Knight
Swordmaster
Valkyria
Bishop

This team works great, until it doesn't.
Usually because the swordsmaster dies too soon.

Great Knight has the Silver Trident for Row Stun. This is truly strong, but... doesn't seem to work as good, probably because of support, cleanse, dispell, whatever.

Valkyria tanks more than she should be able to tank.
Swordmaster does swordmaster things. Attacking my thief, who still survives thanks to thoughness.

In PvE this team is crazy, but in pvp it didn't get the result I expected.

score: -9

Team 8:

Dark Marquess
Swordmaster
Bishop
Breaker

Breaker is broken.
Just feed it with AP and PP stuff, and hide it in the backline with a healer.

Enemy hits an ally? Buff yourself up.
Enemy hits the breaker? Strike back like a truck, and let the bishop heal up again.
Guard? Def? No one cares. Just pure brutality.

Everyone takes their turn, and and end of turn, the hammer falls, killing something. Def or guard? who cares, not the hammer.

Swordmaster and Dark Marquess are there to soften their frontline and take the hits without instantly dying, and they do this beyond good too.
Swordmaster is especially important to kill these dodgy frontliners, and dark marques is probably my broken char #2.

Only defense that worked against the almighty hammer?

Berserker with pure HP muscles.
This was the main reason why team 3 won against team 8. The frontline was able to block the attacks.

Total score: +21

Total ranking:
Team 8: +21
Team 3: +11
Team 2: +9
Team 1: +2
Team 4: -8
Team 7: -9
Team 5: -11
Team 6: -15

By now, everyone is level 25, Team 6 got some reinforcement, and I changed some of the equipment and skill settings, so I will do this again soon and am curious about the results.
