I just recently found out about this game and it looks amazing. I love both Vanillaware and Ogre Battle, and this looks like a mix of them.

As for waifus, I already see a lady with massive tits right up front on the cover. :D

It did. But so did the SNES, I misspoke when I said "added", I should have said reworked. It was way more intrusive on the N64 and it basically forced you into making a Lich/Skeleton evil squad to micro your alignment by using them to finish up weakened lower level squads. Felt like a chore to me.

Played way too much during the weekend.

25-30 hours I think?

Only issue I currently have is that it's not as hard as it's supposed to be, because I outlevel every single mission without grinding at all.

Every unit I have is level 20 at least, yet the enemies are only 17.

Should be, but by now I'm unsure because other say it's much harder than it feels for me.

But yeah, the hardest battles were right around the first big story mission. After that I went further north-east (against a Swordfighter girl above my level because I should have cleared north-west first, oops), and that was my biggest struggle so far.

It seems like I found a right mix in my teams very quickly, and try to keep them all at the same level as good as I can.

Out of my 8 teams, two feel a bit weaker, but one of them is my "witch goes range assist" squad I just garrision in a tower anyways.

This is the reason I bought it on launch (and because the wife convinced me to buy the collector's edition). Vanillaware games become incredibly rare after awhile, so it's best to buy them ASAP. Honestly, I wouldn't even wait for the first sale. Just get that first hard copy as soon as you can.

There is a fourth one that unlocks after beating the game.

But yeah, the game (well, the demo... my copy comes in today) is very easy even on Expert. It is more a highlight of people not understanding how to play the game that there are complaints at all. The angel stage at the beginning is definitely a difficulty spike, but it is a *very* far cry from things like FFT's third stage. And if you get into the tactics system prior to it the stage isn't even a spike.

Wind Fairie's Charm is your friend. Have Alain use one and then just stroll through there up to the boss to end the stage. It also helps to have a flyer unit (like Ochlys) run up to the watchtowers and take them out one by one. That's what I did, and it only cost a little bit of extra healing and 1 rest due to the stamina use involved.

Further, later in the game you really gotta pay attention to the range of the towers, as they can make or break fights. I usually make them my primary targets and rush them with cavalry.

In the angel stage? I just sent the angel up north to kill the tower (followed up with it just beelining to the other towers) with a griffon rider as support. And marched my army down the center while paying attention to the ranges on the towers/archer reinforcements.

You can get them as mercenaries, you don't get a unique one until later.

kirbymuncher posted...

They don't all that much. Gear is *vastly* more important, followed up with promotions. Levels tend to give you about +5/6 (I don't remember the exact amount) of total stats spread out across the entire character, which means that you will largely do 1/2 more damage, take 0/1 less damage, etc. Not really a whole lot to write home about. By comparison there is an easily accessible (and nerfed from the demo) weapon that gives +15 Damage and +5 to all stats, which is basically the same as giving a character 10+ level ups just from the bonus stats alone (and the +15 Damage is not shabby on top of that). Levels matter a bit, definitely, but it is very much the same as Fire Emblem where it's more about the accrual of levels turning you into a juggernaut rather than any couple of them actually making you good.

Kaldrenthebold posted...

yeah I wasn't even advanced enough for mercenary hiring at the time <_<

I guess I also mostly have not seen that many different weapons yet so I just assumed levels were the main thing. I'm not sure exactly how damage calculations work but I feel like I'm often leaving enemies just barely alive so a little more damage would go a long way

It sounds like you need to rebuild towns (that is how you get the honor needed for mercs by that point) and set up your tactics (when you set up tactics you will "overkill" versus default, but on the flip side you basically never leave weakened enemies unless the weakest one is super tanky).

And you will generally get access to 1/2 really pushed weapons/accessories every town. For instance, in the very first one that you can buy from (the port that they use for the tutorial) you can buy a sword that gives you an attack that does magic damage instead of physical (and is higher +Damage than all of the other swords at the time) and makes it so you one-shot armored units almost across the board.

Generally speaking, yeah it's worth it. AFAIK you only get one unit of every type and you definitely have no reason, beyond personal ones, to not get more than one of the super relevant unit types. Like, you don't really need a second Lex running around but Cavalry are good enough that having a fifth Clive wouldn't be too shabby. You also get the advantage of being able to set their stats immediately, instead of using an expensive item, and many of the unique characters have kind of bad growth choices (though none bad enough that they actively harm you clearing stuff).

Yeah I think I've sorta got it figured out by now. What I'd done was the first 2 tutorial/story missions, then the archer sidequest (which freed up another town I didn't have the resources to rebuild yet) and then I wandered until I found that angel mission and got whooped

Now that I've done other missions and wandered around a bit more, I realize the idea here is that I could have explored for resources and rebuilt the town (which would probably get me to D rank) before actually attempting to fight anything. But I was sort of interpreting the game as the sort of thing where you just press ahead constantly and maybe every so rarely you go back to all the towns you forgot about and fix them all up. when really I should be making an effort to level them up before combat missions
