Yeah I think I've sorta got it figured out by now. What I'd done was the first 2 tutorial/story missions, then the archer sidequest (which freed up another town I didn't have the resources to rebuild yet) and then I wandered until I found that angel mission and got whooped

Now that I've done other missions and wandered around a bit more, I realize the idea here is that I could have explored for resources and rebuilt the town (which would probably get me to D rank) before actually attempting to fight anything. But I was sort of interpreting the game as the sort of thing where you just press ahead constantly and maybe every so rarely you go back to all the towns you forgot about and fix them all up. when really I should be making an effort to level them up before combat missions

Yeah, this is very much not a "run forwards" style game. It even makes sense as a major part of the point of the story is that you are trying to build your "peasant army" by rebuilding the nation to topple the guy that burnt it to the ground.

The localization is distractingly terrible. Rather than the usual edits and punch ups they're actually adding a lot of dialogue; seems weird but localizers will continue to impress me with how awful they are at every opportunity.

Nah, the localization is great. There hasn't been a single change that anyone has ever brought up that isn't the most petty chud nonsense, it's all just "I don't know Japanese but I must whine" level stuff.

Alright good to know. I have recruited some others like hoplites and those barbarians, was just wondering if I should hold out. Sounds like I'm gonna go get some gryphon knights! And set up a magical unit! Hoplites rock in the front row. And good god the cavalry is absurd. I have Clive jacked up with high crit and focused on hitting lowest HP enemies and he ends up just killing everything since he gains AP after killing something.

Just keep in mind not to go too overboard as you have limited resources initially so spending it all on mercs can hit you on other things (such as promotions). Mercs are great, but there is definitely a level of resource management that has to be done.
