How sure are we that Hillary isn't the one behind all the negative media coverage of Biden? Maybe she's also behind the movement advocating that Biden should drop out of the race in favor of an unknown person to be decided later; obviously she has a secret plan to win a contested convention. The important thing is that we should discuss this rather than risk the topic falling into a stupid 2016 argument yet again.

I'll add a caveat here that, while kinda obvious sounding is probably worth mentioning anyway - they could just be lying.

IIRC in the Carroll defamation case they filed a motion seeking a 30-day extension to get a bond there and once that was denied it turned out they actually had signed the bond they eventually put up the day before that motion.

OTOH, this is a substantially larger amount: ~450m v ~90m so it's also plausible they're actually telling the truth here.

tbh, I'm not sure Bernie wins in 2020 if he wins in 2016. I doubt Trump runs in 2020 at least. But I feel like McConnell just refuses to let Bernie do anything. Then he probably gets the brunt of the blame for Covid, which is probably nowhere NEAR as bad as it was. But he still gets the blame. And we'd have two vacant Supreme Court seats.

Then again in a world where Bernie wins in 2016, it's probably a different political landscape altogether. Progressives make gains in the senate and the house as demands for Medicare for All from the President drives turnout. We get medicare for all in 2018. Marijuana is descheduled in early 2017. Minimum Wage is raised. Nobody knows what a Kirsten Sinema is. The rich grin and bear the new taxes because their workers are strangely more productive now that they don't have to worry about their healthcare or rent or things like that. They don't credit him with it, of course. Most people listen to the President on covid, and we don't get a lot of anti-vax nonsense except from kooks like RFKJR. We get way more stimuluses, which pushes forward the idea of UBI which Bernie makes as the cornerstone of his 2020 campaign, and implements it in 2021 after winning.

I think wed be living in a significantly different world if the hingepoint of 2016 swung a different way.

If Trump never won, the steam valve would have been released somewhat, and I think the GOP would try to run likeBloomberg, or some big business dude.

Honestly, and in hindsight , the GOP was on the path to have someone like Trump since the Tea Party took off. They didn't need a Trump to lose to avoid it. They needed a Romney to win.

Yeah if Trump loses in 2016 he runs again in 2020. He was already gearing up to it when he thought he would lose. On the positive side I think President Bernie probably wins 2020, sitting governments were winning left and right off the back of COVID from 2020-early 2021, the fact that Trump lost only highlights how much he bungled it. Late 2021-2022 was where the post-COVID backlash really started in most places. However, the Republicans would be looking at a big 2024 victory in that timeline. So who knows.

Does Trump run again in 2020 if he loses in 2016? He doesn't really have the same level of scrutiny towards his actions if he wasn't the president at one point, and there's less of a drive to protect himself from prosecution by bypassing the legal system via the presidency.

If Bernie had won 2016, his supporters would turn on him for not doing any of the stuff he promised (thanks to the Senate) while Republicans would be even angrier about losing the presidency three times in a row. After the 2018 and 2020 elections, the Republicans would control all three branches of government, complete with a filibuster-proof Senate majority and a 6-3 Supreme Court. They then use this power tilt the system further in their favor, preventing Democrats from holding power for a generation. Oh, and all of this gets blamed on Bernie, which centrist Dems use to prevent any progressive policies/candidates from winning even in blue states.

I think so, he was already trying to cast doubt on the election results when he thought he was going to lose. The guy is just power mad and hes totally captured the Republican Party, hes on three straight losses in our reality yet they keep supporting him.

I do think a Democratic President wins in 2020, COVID would provide a boost as they wouldnt completely mess it up like Trump. When you look at other democracies Trump would have won 2020 if he wasnt so incompetent.

Despite the text of the actual Constitution, along with centuries of SCOTUS precedent, making clear that it is the federal government that decides immigration enforcement and not states this Court has decided - 6-3 of course - that "actually, sure, Texas can run its own immigration policy in defiance of and against the wishes of the federal government."

Technically they have not ruled on the legality of Texas's law, but they have decided that it may go into effect while it is being challenged in Court - overturning a federal district Court that stayed it while it was working its way through the system. The Fifth Circuit (of course) overturned that decision without explanation.

The craziest thing here though, IMO, is that Barrett writes an opinion (joined by Kavanaugh; the other 4 in the majority say nothing) that basically says "The Fifth Circuit sure is acting very unusually here and not going through the normal process here. ...But the solution to this behavior is to reward it and let their intended effect go through." So you have 5 justices basically going "Fifth Circuit sus" but then 2 of them go "but it's a sus we like so it's cool" and ruling in their favor.

Im totally sure the SC will change their minds and follow the Constitution once the case lands in front of them for reals.

Update on Texas's SB4 (the immigration law):

Blocked again, but get ready for some silliness.

Following SCOTUS's ruling that put SB4 into effect, the Fifth Circuit scrambled and dissolved their administrative stay -- once more blocking the law when the 3 judge panel ruled 2-1 to do so and set oral arguments up for earlier today to determine whether or not to allow it to continue through the normal process. Sound confusing? Probably! Here's the timeline!

The Fifth Circuit panel can rule at any time and no matter how they decide it's sure to end up appealed again. Per news orgs like the NYT they appeared split on the issue, which I suppose makes sense give the 2-1 order to block it again. The one positive sign is that that split seems to have been between two of the judges and the one who was quiet was a Biden appointee.

I went back to find the exchange you were talking about and I don't think Biden is even specifically mentioned by anyone. I mean he probably was but the conversation is about trans rights wrt the major parties, and a damn sight more genuine by everyone involved than what you're doing by co-opting it.

Blue MAGA is not a thing and is literally an example of going "look there is a blue MAGA" which is as both sides as you get.

Yeah, I'd say there's definitely a middle posture between "always be unsatisfied" and "everything is great" where you can push the administration/Democrats from the left where they're lacking (Gaza, etc.) but also still celebrate/highlight where they're doing good, even if not perfect (forgiving student debt as best they can despite SCOTUS trying to stop them, most pro-labor in decades, etc.) to show where progress in pushing them is/has been made.
