Hey, the writing and dialog in FF7R is great. And interspersed with grunting.

I liked...most of the writing and dialogue in Remake, not always the delivery ("You owe me a pizza").

The grunting was next level though. Fingers crossed that's it's worse this time so we can get an even better compilation video.

Yeah you can find the answers on PS5 rebirth board.

For the record I don't care about spoilers, which is why I know the answer, but I'll be respectable here. I know some are sensitive even with the black boxes.

I took a glance on the Rebirth board and it only makes me grateful that B8 is sensible in comparison. (Yes, I've read this topic and still think this)

Every other board on this site other than B8 is a cesspool. Except maybe some niche video game boards still being used.

It's a replayability issue. The first time through the game yeah it's a great time to explore everything. But now after several hundred hours I know that most of the stuff I can find is useless to whichever build I'm running.

Again, Elden Ring is incredible and the world is beautiful. I just think it'd be better with smaller denser areas. I don't see how that's a controversial opinion.

I think the first time through the game is so long that the issue of replayability just doesnt come up for most players

There's no way it's as good as Infinite Wealth in that respect, considering IW's got the best JRPG cast chemistry since Persona 4.

Arkham City is by far the most well-regarded of the series.

Arkham Knight mostly got criticism for its legendarily bad PC port. On systems where people could actually play it, the consensus I've seen was 'great gameplay, disappointing story'.

Arkham Knight is extremely formulaic. It's basically just City but worse with a car, after City was Asylum but worse with a...city

It was really fucking funny how pissed they were that everybody knew what their big twist in Knight was as soon as the game was announced because who the fuck wouldn't? They just straight up started lying in interviews, and still nobody bought it.

Knight's batmobile wasn't even that bad, it just abused battank combat. Got stale fast.

Also, critical consensus in the PS360 era was basically worthless, it was a low point for gaming journalism. Reviewers praying at the alter of mainstream appeal, an era where reviews were actually being bought (though we got GB out of it, so all's well that ends well?), xenophobia left and right. Bad times.

Feels like Bioshock Infinite may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Okay, sure.

Arkham City is still the most well-regarded in the series by gamers as a whole, and gamers still thought that Arkham Knight was 'great gameplay, disappointing story'. That was true then and it's true now. That's what the actual consensus is, irrespective of our personal feelings.

This repetitive hatred of open world - to the point of spouting misinformation - is getting really old.

Let this game release first at least, but Infinite Wealth is RPG of the year unless something tops it.

The impression I was getting from your posts was that no reception from the 360 era was to be trusted, so the only real take worth considering was how you felt about the series, and that the latter games were worse because open world, etc.

If that sounds like a stretch, then for clarity, I've basically been lumping you and foolmo together on this topic and he's already made posts like a million times.

Oh, no, I was just talking about professional reviews. It was a shit show!

Of course I know the sequels were more popular and liked. People like open world games! I just vehemently disagree.

Just from last year: Armored Core 6? Hi-Fi Rush? Mario Wonder? Resident Evil 4? Alan Wake 2? Final Fantasy XVI? I haven't even dipped into the indies yet.

I'm confused at what's going on here. OG FF7 had open world aspects and a world map after Midgar as well. What the fuck were you expecting Rebirth to be?

There exists only 1 exception in the near 20-year history of open world games, and that's Elden Ring which only just came out. And even there, you can argue that it ruined the deep replayability of Souls.

I obviously can't wait for this but I will point out that I played FF7R 3 times because I enjoyed it so much, which is very rare for me, and I doubt I'll do that with this

I asked this once before, but I heard there was alternate costumes in it. I know we saw Cloud wearing some beachwear in the trailers and the outfits worn on the Shinra ship from the original but have we confirmed anything else?

Im not sure this is accurate? I mean I dont think reviewers were worshipping at the altar of mainstream appeal any more than they were before. If anything it got better, reviews from that period were part of what allowed smaller critical darlings like Braid to break through. I mean it was a time when the most popular console of the generation was straight up rejected by large parts of the industry. Doesnt really fit.

To my knowledge there was never a known case of a review from a significant publication directly being bought, though there was pressure put on outlets by publishers like the Kane & Lynch fiasco. This was common practice before that generation, and got better during. On the other hand its worse now because of influencers. There is of course no excuse for the shameful anti-Japanese sentiment of that era, which was unfortunately spread across the whole industry from devs to even the audience. Lastly Bioshock Infinite is a game that came out and got a gradual backlash with time, the audience and critical reception were the same at launch. Not really the fault of reviewers.

I dont know, I think its much worse now with media companies dying left and right, look at Vice right now. Or the 90s when all these issues were worse and you didnt have the people doing actual journalistic work that you did later on.

But also it doesnt matter because Arkham City was the best received by the general audience, not just critics anyway!
