Amazon (AMZN) has built a vast empire, from e-commerce and streaming to groceries and electronics, off of its network of Prime shoppers. It's betting that its next big push, healthcare, will cement the company's place as an integral part of consumers' lives. On Wednesday, the tech giant unveiled a new Prime benefit a discounted One Medical membership. It's the latest move in offering more health services to Prime members as it looks to further its position in the entrenched industry. Prime members will have access to One Medical's on-demand virtual care and in-person primary care appointments for $9 a month, or $99 annually, and will be able to add family members for $66 each annually. The family rate represents a 67% discount from the current rate.

This. Amazon trades on products, services, and information. The biggest retailer in the world, now your doctor? That is really fucking bad.

It's a snapshot from the Mike Judge movie, Idiocracy. It's a dystopian tale set in the future where technology and consumerism are at their highest, but the common person's intelligence is an all-time low. To the point where the main character, a military base buffoon who is considered the dumbest person on site, wakes up in the future and is suddenly, by default, the smartest person in the world by comparison. Hilarity ensues. You should watch it.

Year by year it's become scarily prophetic.

Hence why the OP said nationalized healthcare. Choosing between buying medicine for your children or feeding and clothing yourselves should not be down to how much you make in a week.

It doesn't seem so bad compared to other services like MDLive or doctors on call.

A lot of men's health or mental health services will charge far more than $9 a month and probably also include a visit fee.

Maybe a decent alternative if your doctor or specialist still doesn't allow telehealth for follow-ups. Or if you need that last minute prescription refill that you forgot about.

This. They could force insurance companies and Obamacare to be cheaper/competitive.

If you don't work full time for a decent company that offers healthcare, it's stupidly expensive. People who are in between jobs or retired have it the worst. You get punished for being broke if you don't do Cobra or the current Obamacare system.

You can thank Republicans and greedy insurance corporations for that.

America desperately needs an affordable health care system.

Well that's not fucking ghoulish at all.

Even if it ends up being like Cuban's CostPlusDrugs, the thought of these billionaire fucksticks getting directly involved with health care provision is deeply fucking unsettling. Maybe we should reform things before people decide that dependence upon billionaire generosity is enough of a band-aid solution to our world's deepest and most pervasive problems.

I've been using One Medical since before AMZ bought them. It's fine. It's pretty easy to get appointments and they do walk-ins for vaccines and blood tests. In-network for me, of course. Several offices near me. I'm not a cheerleader for them, but I don't have any problems with them, either.

As much criticism as Amazon deserves for their treatment of workers and market aggression, this seems like a good thing. Their entire model has always been good for the consumer and I don't see why this would be an exception.

That isn't entirely true. Well Amazon does have some nice upsides(yes getting pratically anything delivered in a day or two sometimes even mere hours is very useful. I am a non driver so I use them fairly often) there are plenty of downsides as well.

It's a story about how corps get so powerful they own basically everyone and everything. Your last name becomes whatever the company you work for. For example, Tim Apple, except unironically.

It's a more serious take on the same idea from Idiocracy. The people aren't stupid, but consumerism has still taken over every facet of life.

On the other hand, the fact that Amazon could be moving into and possibly dominating another business sector... bad.

Yes, OneMedical provides in-person doctor appointments. The monthly/annual fee is for access to make appointments. It's basically cheap concierge medicine. Your insurance does not cover the membership fee and if you don't have insurance, you would pay the usual exorbitant rates for US medical care. Your copays would apply as usual for your insurance plan (they are probably in-network, but best to check!). They don't have all (most?) specialties, so for some needs, they would be giving you a referral to a specialist, not treating you "in house" (example: colonoscopy).

And how competitive is this with Cuban's company (As Kimberly brought up)

My understanding is that Cost Plus is an online pharmacy (with generally good prices and superior pricing transparency), not a medical provider.

One Medical isn't great.

Used to work for them. You pay a yearly fee for basically nothing but their "concierge service" which isn't really much different than regular doctor's offices.

One big benefit they push is that that their offices don't have direct phone lines, so the in office staff can focus on patients. So all calls are routed to a call center - which is drastically understaffed.

Not worth the $200 a year it costs standard IMO.

This is one of those things that CE will say is bad but wont explain why. Just rely on outrage energy to force it into being bad.

Like, if Amazon takes over medical care then that means the alternatives were so dogshit, lets let Amazon do it. Like someone said, your healthcare being attached to your employer (or pay an arm and a leg in the private market) is no different.

Amazon bad so everything involving Amazon is bad too is not persuasive. Why is this bad? Preferably without a snarky or condescending answer. I dont see the issue.

Now, if only there was a way to have an even bigger group of subscribers all pay into a single system and it would magically end up cheaper for everyone involved. Maybe they could just take a little extra out of everyone's paycheck and we would never really even notice. I feel like maybe we should look into some sort of solution similar to this.
