#95 - Rafael Nadal (Real World Figure) (Ed Nom. #2/4)
From Earth-4's dc.wikia.com's article on Superman Sports Collector's Edition #4:

"... As early as the 1960s, real world figures would meet Superman within the pages of special collector's editions. Luminaries such as John F. Kennedy, Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope and Leon Spinks all appeared in the pages of the Man of Steel. However, that sort of stunt guest cast would fade by the mid-80s. Yet the idea of real world guest stars emerged with the advent of an Amazing Spider-Man issue featuring newly-elected President Barack Obama in the year 2009. With sales seeing a massive surge, DC attempted to reduplicate the effort with Rafael Nadal.

Published in 2012, the plot featured a science fiction epic - an alien races known as the Scrubb demanded that Earth's greatest champion battle their most famous athletes. Previous editions of this special series so the appearances of Calvin Johnson, Lebron James and Usain Bolt. Rafael Nadal appeared in the fourth volume, where Superman temporarily lost his powers and faced Nadal on the court. Ultimately, the duo work together to defeat the Scrubb, with Nadal taking on their tennis champion while Superman battles a space-armada. With art from Mike Deodato and writing by J.T. Krul, the special supplement saw meager sales and proved to be the last of the Superman Sports Saga for years to come."

My Thoughts:
Comics aficionados likely will be well-versed in the million-seller comic, Superman vs. Muhammad Ali, still standing to this day as one of the most famous Superman stories ever written. This is likely the only use for Rafael Nadal in terms of his comics potential, sad to say, Ed. Outside of this blatant sort of cash-grab appearance, what use is there for a tennis player - even one of Nadal's stature - in comics? Real people have often been included in comics, but for referential purposes. The stories of gods and monsters don't exactly jibe well with the blatant guest starring roles that would make Roseanne look nuanced and subtle by comparison. I can't build a series around Nadal, certainly not in a starring role. Just look at all of the vanity projects featuring politicians in one-shot comics. They're meant to be cheap low-cost value supplements; no talented writer or artist wants to spend their lives penning or illustrating the basest form of commercial one-shot. That applies to Nadal. Maybe if you'd gone for a more timeless athlete like Babe Ruth or Michael Jordan, I could work with it. But Nadal? That's just a bridge too far.

#94 - George Costanza (Seinfeld) (Hbthebattle Nom. #1/4)
From the Earth-4 dc.wikia.com/George_Costanza article:

"...after which, thanks to the sudden financial trouble, Ted was forced to move down ten floors into the apartment abutting Constanza's. For the next year in Justice League International, Kord and Costanza would suffer through a tumultuous rivalry as Costanza not only earned the enmity of the Blue Beetle, but also the other residents of Sloopy Towers. Ultimately, Costanza would attempt to hire the Injustice League to take out Blue Beetle permanently, but due to a mix-up with sauces in a Chinese take-out order and George's unwillingness to split the bill equally with Major Disaster, Clock King and Multi-Man, a brawl commenced. George's desire for low sodium soy and the lack of any packets led to the deluded belief on Costanza's part that he should owe less than his proportional 25% of the bill, to which the Injustice League chose to instead force down his throat right before they dropped him from his fifteenth story window. Costanza's fate was left to the reader's imagination."

My Thoughts:

Once again, we run into a NIMBY situation on our list. George Costanza exemplifies the beloved and iconic Larry David style of sitcom writing, where relatable and often intensely pedestrian plotlines are given a neurotic examination, overexaggerating their importance through the magnifying glass of classic comedy writing. George *is*, in many ways, Larry himself. An unflinchingly accurate self-reflection on his own attitude, warts and all. But the difficulty in repositioning such a specific character made for a specific scenario is that there aren't small-time sitcoms in comics... except for Justice League International. This comic run from Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis was lauded for how well it wove the '90s Seinfeld sensibility into superheroics. But the key here is superheroics. The normal, every day people in the JLI are one-shots at best because with comics, you have limited screen space. A complicated plot that relies on a heavy amount of dialogue - even in the Giffen Era League with a heavy premium put on textboxes - can't handle the landscape needed for a 50-page TV script. George flourishes in the back-and-forth and the minutiae - both things that ultimately are limited in a comic script. George would have to fill an entire issue by himself in order to get across his character, the things he needs to thrive on. And we just don't have room for that in comics. The hybridization of art with text becomes a limiting factor.

I wouldn't want to read Seinfeld, either. Half of the magic comes from the performance. The sarcasm sung like lyrics. The rhythm of an argument, the patter back and forth. You lose that in text alone. And as excellent as Seinfeld is, it works as a television show for a reason. The greatest shows simply can't be reduplicated in another medium. Still, I think there's room for a brief arc with George in comics, as briefly outlined above.

I'm now extremely interested in why Chandler Bing worked so well if George can't. It seems like most of the issues with George would apply to most Sitcom characters.

Maybe it's because George is such a jerk he can't really slot in as an ally to anyone so he has to take center stage-- kinda what the whole "needs a whole issue to himself" is getting at.

That comic was amazing though.

At the time, my argument was focused on how Chandler plays well into the 'best friend' role of a superhero and could transition over time into a superhero costume himself. His brand of sarcasm fits well with the tonality of a Spider-Man style quipper. Perhaps a little harder edge, but Chandler was a good-looking guy with the sort of inauspicious day job and tight-knit friend group that made him perfect for a superheroic secret identity.

Chandler is a natural fit because comic readers know the personality and how it jibes in comics. It's a round peg for the round hole. Whereas, as much as George is a great character, I think he requires more in the way of acting, of Jason Alexander performing on-screen, to present the character. At least, that's my perception of him.

Also, running an RPG session tonight, so probably won't get around to making a new comic. Back at it tomorrow.

#93 - Globglogabgalab (Strawinsky and the Mysterious House) (Karo Nom. #1/4)
From the dc.wikia.com of Earth-4, under the article of "Globglogabgalab":

"...who unfortunately was transformed by Grossout's sentient sludge, meaning that despite Philbert escaping his years-long monstrous curse, a new being would bear it like a cross. Becoming something akin to an earthworm-human hybrid, the security guard now known as Globgloabgalab (thanks to his inability to communicate coherently) would take Grossout's place on the team in the last published issue of the title. Even though the group would appear sporadically afterwards in titles such as JLA: Black Baptism and Superboy the Ravers through cameos, Globglogabgalab would ultimately disappear after a handful of appearances. His final fate is unknown."

My Thoughts:
In my initial post, I made a ruling that said I'd do no research for any of these nominations. I think that's fair, since you all aren't doing any research either, so that street should go both way. Thus, we witness the first drop of what I call the category of "I Don't Know You and I Don't Care to Know You". I promise, these write-ups are receiving the absolute least amount of effort possible and are deserving of my eternal enmity. Clearly, Karo was going for a joke nomination here. The problem with joke nominations are that, ever since I exited my 20's, I just don't find anything cute or funny any more. Instead, it infuriated me. It earned my eternal ire, and I made a sticky note reminding myself that, should Karo ever host a ranking of his own, I should torpedo it with something equally as terrible, aesthetically disturbing, and out-and-out dumb as some super-niche, badly animated whatever.

Don't worry, Karo. There are other people who ticked me off worse than you with these noms. You're getting off easy.

But let's talk about Globglogabgalab for a moment. Aside from the absolutely horrid aesthetic design, there's a discomfort factor in the nude color palette that makes Globglogabgalab a terrible nomination. The sort of nomination that fits into mid-90s Ghost Rider, Rob Liefeld Image or, as you can see here, a low-rent DC 90's horror outfit that shops around grotesqueries as odd curiosities for the sort of readers that enjoy Slipknot and horror. It's a looky-loo design engineered to play like the freaks in a circus. Point and laugh and leave feeling unsettled - there's nothing worse than that. It's the basest sort of perversion in the human experience. I hope I didn't just drop Snake as a reader.

#92 - Usada Pekora (Hololive) (handsomeboy Nom. #1/4)

From the Earth-4 comicbook.com Top Ten List - "Ten Marvel Characters from the 2000s You Forgot About":

"... Next on our list is Usada Pekora, a theoretically ambitious attempt to hybridize the success of the Marvel Mangaverse with the burgeoning popularity of Brian K. Vaughan's "Runaways" series. Introduced as the relocated daughter of a Japanese mobster and Canadian supervillainess, Usada Pekora possessed the ability to sing emotions into existence using a form of super-charisma. While her appearances only began at the tail end of the first Runaways volume, by the third volume of the series, Usada simply disappeared from the franchise entirely. While many cited a clear lost in translation effect that left most readers lukewarm to her energy which clashes somewhat with Molly Hayes (aka Princess Powerful), others felt as though the attempt to introduce a Japanese aesthetic to the series didn't fly with a readership that could just as easily read manga titles published from other distributors and chose instead to stick with western comics. Usada certainly developed a decent contention with the older teens of the Runaways, but her decidedly naive, bubbly and childish personality not only clashed in-story with characters like Nico and Alex, but also clashed with the entire aesthetic of a general Marvel title. It wouldn't be until years later that such a character ended up jibing with the Spider-Verse through its widespread variety of art styles and its usage of animation to convey aesthetic disaparities and highlight them."

My Thoughts:
As mentioned in the first post, I'm not an anime guy - and that extends to, I suppose, some sort of virtual idol? I'm not terribly familiar with this genre, though I think it might be a vtuber. I find it difficult enough to watch streams as it is of people playing games when I could just play them myself. Annoying voices would probably be a bridge too far for my sanity. So, alas for handsomeboy, this nomination fell into the realm of "I Don't Know You and I Don't Care to Know You."

I think there's a startling lack of forethought in nominating a vtuber for this category, especially one that's of an eastern aesthetic. As with many of the upcoming anime nominations (you folks who went that direction are cruising for a bruising), the entire idea of the manga to comic book split is based almost solely on those perfunctory differences in design. This list is all about comics potential - and manga stands apart entirely in its own field from comics. Also, there is just zero potential for a character whose entire identity appears to be a carrot in their hair. Style over substance doesn't always work in comics, despite what you may think!

Well obviously if Scarlet is not going to do Googling, he's not going to watch hundreds of hours of video content.

Also for me, the character's 'canon' lore can be significantly different from the streaming actions and in-jokes, and if I were to do a topic like this I'd take the 'canon' lore more, otherwise they're all just streamers.

But I digress, I forgot about just going by design for characters he's not familiar with and kinda misremember that it would be based on cursory search.
