yesterday beat Avatar s3, watched the Shyamalan movie (lol), then first ep of Korra

Book of Fire

• yeah I find Aang annoying, he has his moments but ultimately I'm not a fan
• Zuko's face turn is adorable lmao, I said it takes a looooong time to happen and boy I still stand by that, but I can still appreciate it (also Zuko x Mai is great)
• I like Sokka, he's fun, he feels like he has more purpose finally, also again good ship with Suki, much better than Yue
• Katara: bloodbending is rad, but Katara feels a bit sidelined for the end just as a tagalong to Zuko
• I was always fine with Kataraang but this season takes a massive ass dump on it, does a lot to push for Zutara but it's so incredibly sudden because Zuko has such little time as a good guy and besides he's got a good thing going with Mai
• Kataraang kiss for the final scene is so incredibly undeserved, season 2 they were clearly developing feelings for each other but season 3 is so incredibly one-sided with Aang becoming insecure and Katara being doubtful and that's never really resolved but then suddenly the show ends with them kissing. huh? absolutely no work at all into that
• back half, finally having Zuko on the team... but it really just feels like the show is over and there's not much else to happen. Zuko joins the team, has a little one-on-one episode with every character, they watch a play recapping the events of the show, then it's finale time.
• I like Toph a lot, but I mean I don't really have much to say which is unfortunate... it was a nice she had a mature role in listening to Zuko but yeah *shrug*
• I don't really care about the Fire Lord, whatever generic bad guy, but Azula remains A+ baddie and I like how she unravels to distrust & self-doubt after the Mai stands up to protect Zuko & Ty Lee protects Mai

Shyamalan

• dragon ball evolution was better, at least I had a laugh while this one was just a really bad rush through of season 1 with absolutely zero retention of the character's personalities
• oh wow it's jarring how all the good guys got whitewashed and all the bad guys turned indian. wtf Sokka, his hair is at least accurate but then they turned him into a dark & serious guy, how tf?

Korra

• i love her already, it's great to start with a capable multi-element bender because honestly Avatar failed to ever really get there
• also not being a 12-y/o, because oh dear god Aang absolutely acted his age and I'm glad to move up from that age

damn you moved through Avatar pretty fast

feels like probably the biggest "must watch" show that I've neither watched nor possessed, based on all the hype surrounding it over the years...

it's a fine show but it doesn't really live up to the hype to me. I think the biggest thing for me with a show is how much I love its characters and I don't really feel that strongly about them here. Overall thoughts without spoilers...

Aang starts off as a pretty fun kid surviving with a great burden on his shoulders. He's pretty fun and decently competent for his point in the story... but as the show goes on I think he just stagnates. He never really does live up to his title I don't think, which is why I'm finally glad to see that realized in Korra ep1.

Katara was my fav for a while but like, I don't really have much to say. Or a lot of what I have to say would be getting into the plot of the show. By the end though she dropped a bit for me, I don't think season 3 Katara is very consistent and she doesn't have a compelling end-point. For most the show she's a bit of a cliche'd "mom of the group" which the show specifically comments on but for the first season being the only other bender cementers her as the #2 fighter, while still learning along-side Aang.

Her brother Sokka, not being a bender, for a long time he doesn't really feel like he has a point. He's a goofball, he's irrelevant as a fighter, he's kinda just there because he's Katara's brother. Over time though I mean he is a more consistent and reasonably likeable character, and he does progress as a legitimate tactician which finally gives him a reason for being.

Zuko... is very complicated. I can see why people would like him, but at the same time it feels dragged out to me, to the point he feels one-note in the short-run. Like if you zoom into a graph you can make a curved function look straight. Big picture he's pretty interesting, and in a way the length it takes his journey does make it compelling... but then during the journey itself can be tiring. Like you're shouting move on already! Helps though that he's got Iroh with him who's a really good mentor character.

Toph is a funny, likeable brash girl but uh not the most dynamic or involved.

Fire Nation is pretty generic evil bad guys but the troupe of baddies introduced s2 are a great trio of girls full of personality.

Interested in Korra tho!

love triangles are the worst story trope

yeah it's hard to think of a love triangle I didn't hate, it just brings the show down and makes me enjoy the characters less

and like in this case it's especially annoying with how extremely fast it went in, I don't even get to know the characters so I'm not gonna believe in any of their shoddy romance drama. yeah you're kids and you're stupid but I'm not gonna enjoy it

Bolin got better when he dropped out and he got to become his own character, but then Korra & Mako just hook in a different 3rd wheel and I get to hate Korra & Mako for what they do to her. I'm hearing that this show was only intended to have the one season and it makes the decision all the more baffling to leave it here as if we're supposed to enjoy their ending.

Frustrating because the A plot was actually really good! I said I really liked Avatar's villain trio because they had big enjoyable personalities, and I still think they're more likeable, but Equalists actually have a motive you can understand along with an interesting backstory that gets revealed. It's not just fighting evil conqueror nation that wants to rule the world like all of Avatar was, and the show actually got me to hate a character before winning me back on his face-turn! Impressive for 12 episodes.

Unfortunately the romance really hurts the show.

I said it before but a big thing part of what makes my favourite media is liking its cast. So far here I do still like Korra, she's a cool protagonist when the show focuses on the main plot and I give her a lot more points than Aang even taking some off for the bad. The friends meh to bad. I said Bolin gets better but I mean he still doesn't have much. Asami I really like and I feel bad for her. She was really cool in action and that she had to stand up to her father, but then most her time is being on the rough end of the triangle.

On the plus side I do really like the adult characters. Tenzin is if Aang was a mature adult, and he's a great mentor figure, it's really cool. Toph's daughter again cool, she doesn't have her mom's entertaining personality but unlike her she actually is quite engaged with the plot and has more of a compelling character. Plus the side material about her history with Tenzin is good, playing for good laughs with Tenzin's wife. I guess that's the answer on a good love triangle - but it's when they're all old people well moved-on from it and only referencing their triangle as backstory in the past.

oh I liked Macross Frontier and that was pretty centered on its love triangle

although i also haven't seen it since high school

how is season 2 beginning with the exact same start as season 1 - korra eagerly rushing towards new training, tenzin telling her not yet, korra telling him to fuck off

ugh my other pet peeve trope where a character finds out a secret of someone they love and yells WHY DO YOU KEEP HIDING THINGS FROM ME

peak example Arrowverse when Felicity finds out about William

also main character trusting blatantly evil dude intentionally driving wedges between her and her loved ones

this season is starting off with annoying korra

enjoying the Aang family hashing out their family trauma, great personal moments

korra plot going along with the obviously evil uncle not so much, it's just too blatant and has been since the very first episode and now this was #3

there are a lot of things about Korra I really like
there are a lot of things I really don't, too

yeah there's a lot of things I really like in Korra. but this show also annoys me so much more than Avatar did. and again I like shows a lot based on their characters and while I wasn't wowed by the Avatar cast, they were a much more enjoyable gang than all this terrible interpersonal drama

the very next two episodes are probably my favourite of the series - the first avatar arc

leave it to completely ditching the current era of characters to give me something completely detached from it and it's beautiful

lava bending was kinda cool, but then wait the fuck it's an earthbending technique where they can just turn earth into lava? what the fuck that's insanely overpowered and yeah the lava bender just easily fucking melted the entire Northern Air Temple and it doesn't even feel like an intended use just like oh shit i gotta get away so here's lava and now the temple's destroyed.............. and suddenly Bolin can do it, because the show has done an absolutely garbage ass job at making him look competent so why not toss him this monstrosity

also in the same episode hey the enemy who only recently gained airbending... he can fly now, a technique that only one guru nomad 4,000 years ago could accomplish, but this baddie needed it so he tries it and it works

wowwwwwwwwwwww how do you devote a whole ass recap episode to the very worst aspect of the show

approaching the end and I've honestly just been incredibly disengaged from the show for a while

there's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many characters I don't give the slightest shits about taking up so much damn time and it's highlighting the lack of focus

I like having side-characters, but this show doesn't treat them like ATLA did where they have their own time to be important. Bumi only had a few episodes but he was a very memorable side-character. This last season however there's sooo many players that are just always around and I feel like at this point EVERY character that exists is all fighting for equal billing and it's so weird. Nothing stands out, they're just all doing the same thing.

I really don't get what they're thinking with this show.

I WANT to like this show, literally on the finale now and I do like Korra, she's a much cooler protag than Aang was, but she has so little work with and her supporting cast is so grand and the closer ones too her are the least likeable except for Asami who honestly I just feel hasn't been significant since s1 ended.

watching LoK also really makes me appreciate that ATLA had one big 3-season story to tell. I considered it generic at the time and still do, but each of its arcs are very well defined checkpoints of it's grand story and it keeps you invested in the whole package. with LoK it feels like when you're not interested you could just stop... at least if I wasn't always obsessive about completing everything I do

alright that's done.... although most of my thoughts are already above

only thing added is Korrasami, but like I just said I feel like Asami's already been such a background character I can only be sad that we couldn't have had more leading here. maybe blame that I've been spoiled on it, but at a certain point you just realize "oh it's just gonna be a small nod". which hey that is a big deal and especially with this being nearly a decade ago, but ultimately yeah it's not much. they're the two main characters that I actually like so it's a shame to feel like they got shafted so much.

it also goes hand in hand with how isolated these seasons are, nobody can actually have multi-season arcs like they could in ATLA - Kataraang developed over all 3 seasons (even thought I think it blew up in s3), as did Zuko's entire ass story. I said early on I hated Sokka x Yue since it was so quick, but Suki actually got it right!

maybe I'll watch She-Ra next.... only problem being my obsessive ass would need to watch the entire Masters of the Universe franchise because that's I have to do everything

Korra kinda won me over about the time Grandma Toph showed up (definitely not because I'm a Toph/Beifong fangirl nope) but....yeah. You're minority opinion on Korrasami I think btw, it's the kinda thing you have to love or people will assume you're homophobic >_> I'm happy we got it at all, but.....yeah.
