I'm not a Republican.

Student Loan Forgiveness would be nice for people, but it's an obvious carrot-on-a-stick at this point. Efforts would be much better focused on things like improving wages and decreasing living costs, but those are gradual and small changes that could actually be attained so we can't have that. Gotta dangle that sexy five-figure loan forgiveness carrot that is easily handwaved away at the last second because that's what the hyper-rich want people to focus on.

And I guarantee those kids aren't properly educated on them either. They're probably given just the initial loan amount and maybe the interest rate by the person pushing it.

Let's pretend I actually believe your first sentence.

The idea that it's a "carrot on a stick" is a lovely talking point from Rose Twitter and Republicans. Rose Twitter doesnt understand how government actually works so they classically argue "both sides" in a roundabout way anytime a campaign promise fails, but seem to lack understanding it failed do to mostly Republicans. Republicans argue the same talking with the aim to convince voters Dems never wanted to pass a campaign promise that oh btw Republicans legally obstructed in the first place.

What the President can do is limited without Congress. So the only takeaway for anyone truly disappointed about the SCs verdict is they need to get out and vote, and grasp WHY the campaign promise actually failed. Also understand regardless of whatever your candidate promises, you need to understand they can't meet those promises if they don't have the numbers in Congress. So if they don't have the numbers this Congress, rally for more and vote out the ones against what you want.

So the "dangling carrot" angle isn't accurate.

Many of the people complaining the debt wasn't forgiven are the same people who stayed home 2014, 2016, and some even 2018. On the, "whats the point of voting...both sides the same" logic. Yet they want a gold star for participating in the last 1 to 3 elections confused why the people they just started voting for can't pass anything. Same to many of the non voters of 2016 with a shocked pikachu face Roe v Wade was gutted.

The false hope is harmful. These are people in the worst position to dick around with their loans outside of legal methods.

Certainly, but the fact of the matter is that broad student loan forgiveness simply isn't going to happen within the framework of our government. Too many roadblocks and people in power who don't want it to happen. It is far more feasible to put all efforts into improving lives for everyone via things like reducing cost of living and increasing wages and doing so would actually have measurable results.

I mathed out the rest of my private loan. Fuck it, I should just pay it off over the weekend. Probably can't avoid a final interest hit tomorrow but it's pennies.

Really comes down to whether I want to complain about an extra $300 in interest over the final 5 payments.

On paper, I shouldn't pay it off early. But again, fuck it. Yes, I can make a better return than my 3.15% interest. I could just let that payment money grow at a theoretical 4.75% or more instead.

And yes, this is privilege.

Had I known what I know now, I would have gone to a state school and been kinder to myself and my parents.

How loans function and the payback schedule should've been drilled into my skull. Even the idea of "you have to pay it back" was mysterious until I had a job and suddenly I had to. And even then, nobody explained to me why I had different issuers and interest rates, how to deal with them, or how much more I had taken on during grad school.

I just nodded my head the whole time.
