You don't like seeing the progressiveness of SOLAR POWERED GUNDAMS?

I mean it's basically been 3 episodes of people standing around talking, along with news footage, cut between characters they haven't actually given any characterization yet shooting guns from a Gundam at nobodies, all directed complete flat with no notable animation.

They opened with the MC as a kid in war, which, you know....I've watched IBO, this ain't quite hitting the same just yet on that front.

Do the 00 boys get any less characterization that the Wing boys early on? WfM gives characterization to Suletta, Guel, and Elan through 6 episodes, but it's also half the length

I don't like Wing either!

That show was rad when I was in middle school, but when I watched a bit a few years ago I couldn't stand it.

Oh...well...00 is plenty different from Wing, aside from multiple Gundam protags with a demonstrable tech advantage fighting the Earth's forces by themselves with the "main" character being emotionless and mission-first. But that's all surface level.

Wing doesnt hold up. Its so bad now.

Trieze and the anthem for the Gundams hold up great

The ending of episode 1 is still one of the best out of context Gundam moments, I'll give it that.

This dub is not the best.

I like how they got the voice of Light Yagami for Setsuna in both languages. Always wondered if that was intentional.

I can't imagine the parts with him saying his name over and over are as hilarious in the dub.

The first few episode of 00 world building is so good because you're essentially seeing the world through Louise and Saji Crossroado's eyes. War is such a foreign concept to them, they are basically living in a first world real life country and going about their daily lives. The concept of economic blocs and how the world is split apart along the solar elevators is simply fascinating. This was such a cool concept back in 2007. Gundam 00 is the swan song of the mecha genre. Eureka 7 > Code Geass > TTGL > 00. After this stretch of shows the genre is basically dead with the occasional Sunrise treat every few years.

Man, Id totally forgotten the details of the current HxH arc had to go back to Ch. 380 to reacclimate myself

I also spent $60 buying the last several volumes of 20th Century Boys because I was very annoyed with the low translation quality when the scans switched to a new group for the last third in my reread

I liked 86. It had a lot of good ideas and neat battles. The racism aspect was very heavy-handed, though.

Having said that, my recent low opinions towards Witch from Mercury, Code Geass, and Evangelion are making it increasingly clear that I'm not a huge mecha fan! My favorite mecha anime is Planet With

That's rough. All three of those shows are very different takes on the genre. Code Geass is less mecha and more just meme and Evangelion is the director shitting on the entire mecha genre while deep in depression.

I legitimately found Cross Ange enjoyable other than that character. Watching Ange become top bitch of the group was great and then that walking stereotypical anime beta loser male was introduced and turned her into a wet blanket whenever he was in scenes

Alright 5 episodes in.

I need to clarify that no matter what I'm finishing this show because I promised a friend who likes it I would, but I would be dropping it here otherwise.

I would call this episode "impressively bad" in a very literal sense, by which I mean I think it's amazing that the episode can have this many potentially interesting things going on and still come off so lame. The complete failure of the show to make me care about a single character in what already seems to be exceeding a dozen important leads is shocking. The newtype girl having this mind meld breakdown feels insulting because they had this character on screen for 5 minutes and spent half that shoving in a rushed backstory, and other than that she's done nothing. The Gundam pilots are basically not even real characters yet, and they're trying to throw some nuts backstory in for Hallelujah, who's been such a non-presence that when he's supposed acting wierd you can't even tell because we don't know what he acts like when he's normal. We don't know ANYTHING about ANYONE on the Celestial Beings ship, including the captain.The guy I assume is the main character had more lines of dialogue in the pre-opening of the first episode as a child than he's had on 5 episodes so far.

So maybe it's all intentionally like this, and I'm to look back on all this very differently later and it's just a method of storytelling that bothers me. I guess going in so blind after all this time just didn't prepare me for what it was gonna be like.

To get cheeky for a bit, to the people who say it's wierd that Mercury looks like it may be two cours instead of four...the first 2 episodes of Mercury had significantly more interesting plot threads and character building than these first 5 episodes, so I guess it's all about how you use it. Of course, same goes for IBO and that was 4 cour.

It's just weird because Gundams (at least the AUs) are always 4 cours.

Where's your energy for shitting on characters when we know 0% about Prospera. Or how about we know nothing about Suletta or Miorene until the last two episodes of the first cour? WfM is a "character driven" story yet it fails at that. You learn so much more about the four pilots and their rivals in the first five episodes than WfM's two main leads in 12.

Bruh literally the entire first episode of the show is about Prospera's backstory.

And what do you MEAN we know nothing about Miorine and Suletta? The entire show is about them and watching them interact and grow in their setting. Almost the entirety of Mercury so far is character building, to the point that it's actually a complaint some peope have with it: too much character stuff, get to the main plot!

I'm not saying we need to know a characters life story from the get go, or that we shouldn't have mysteries, but they should, like....do stuff, interact with other characters in meaninful ways, like really anything. So far in here they haven't even given me a thread to care about with these folks. They stand around talking about the mission, or they pilot the Gundam.

Frankly, the only character who's made any impact on me is scar face pilot guy.

I guess scar guy is a rival, but Miyano guy fought him and blonde dude at some point.

What do we know about this Char clone? You're literally nitpicking that we don't know anything about any of the characters in 00 because you're literally at the start of all four main character arcs. Why don't the four pilots know anything about each other? Because their organization is structured in a way to compartmentalize the pilots in case they get captured. Are you mad that you don't know anything about the magical green particles emitting from the backs of the Gundams too?

There are so many Prospera scenes to infer motivations from, plot threads foreshadowed with multiple potential directions her machinations can go, and character inferences to make for her through this series. If you're going to be this reductive with literal South Park hurr durrs, I don't know why you expect me to engage.

I've already straight up said that I'm still watching and this may all work out once I watch more. You're acting like I have some vendetta against this series that I have been interested in watching for over a decade, have been told is good for almost as long, and have NO reason to dislike going into it.

I'm going to pleased as a peach once this thing likely all comes together for me, but right now I think it's pretty bad. You're not going to suddenly make me go "oh wait, maybe I DO like this" by telling me the other thing that I like is bad and I'm wrong about it.

There's no subtle foreshadowing for Prospera's character. It's fucking blatant. You're not some genius that figured anything out. The problem lies in the fact that there's no payoff other than "wow she finally showed her true self".

Your biggest mistake is assuming I'm invested in your enjoyment of the show. You've already made up your mind to nitpick stuff and not really pay attention to anything happening.

Nothing to do with the true nature of Suletta and Ericht and whether they're actually the same person, nothing to do with the truth of the AI in Aeriel and whether it's actively conscious or contains a human soul, nothing to do with the true nature of her relationship with Suletta what kind of conditioning and potential trigger words she's laced in there that were hinted throughout the show. No, me and my Discord group spent and entire season of anime trying to nail down if Prospera was "sus".

Well, Netflix cut me off faster than I thought! I was halfway through Kotaro Lives Alone, but I guess it'll have to wait. Luckily I'm visiting my brother next month, so I can connect my phone to the primary location and have another 30 days after that (as I understand it), but for now I guess that's that.

I'm actually kind of happy I won't feel obligated to watch a bunch of Netflix stuff right now. I'll get to spend the weekend finally watching shows from the current season! Magical Revolution girls here I come

Let's be honest here. That's the only reason you're pumping WfM stock. Throw in a little yuri and you're going to put it in anime of the decade category.

00 is straight up Gundam homage after Gundam homage. But since it's "just Gundam" then it's bad. But as soon as any Gundam deviates from the norm, like G Gundam or IBO, suddenly they are the best thing since bread sliced while Henry Ford is driving the first Model T on top of the Wright Flyer I.

I've watched episode 0, aka the prologue. It's not some complex nuanced character piece.

Gundams and AI are designed to help humans adapt to space. The tech is new and dangerous, Prospera loses limbs due to experimentation. Space companies ban Gundam research then destroy Prospera's lab and she loses everything she loves. Very complex character. I wonder what her motivation would be throughout the first cour...? Revenge maybe? Hmmmm... we are in need of Herlock Sholmes' great deduction here.
