Alright, I've made a list of stuff from this season I want to check out. I'm on the fence for Onimai and Tomo-chan, so if anyone is watching that and wants to vouch for it or warn me away, I'd appreciate it! Otherwise, I'll watch:

This season certainly seems like it has a lot more going for it than the last few, but I guess it's finally time to see if any of this is actually good.

Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari - really loving this one.

Buddy Daddies - best show of the season so far.

The Magical Revolution etc - Very good, and moving at a pretty fast pace.

High Card - Not as good as it could be, but still having a good time with it, waiting to see where it goes.

Giant Beats of Ars - Starts out promising but it's really been spinning its wheels. At the moment it's a drop for me.

The Fire Hunter - Extremely interesting, but waiting for it to finish.

Reborn to Master the Blade - better than you would expect but it's kind of falling apart, I like it more than I should but can't honestly recommend it.

I assume you were only listing new shows, but are you also going to watch Vinland Saga S2?

Yeah I only ever count new shows for stuff like this. An anime has to be really terrible for me to not watch new seasons of it, and even then I usually feel bad and watch the crappy ones anyway.

Vinland S2, D4DJ All Mix, and Bofuri S2 are the sequels I'll be watching. I also started In/Spectre the other day, which has a S2 this season, but I'm still on S1.

Cour 1 down.

For all intents and purposes, the show got really good as soon as I stared bitching about how bad it was. Pretty excited to see where it goes!

Farming Life in Another World - do you like slow-life, isekai harems?

Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible - mild teasing girl rom-com

Buddy Daddies - solid Spy X Family knock-off, I guess. I actually dropped SXF and am keeping up with this one

The Magical Revolution etc - the beginning is very LycoReco (yeah, this technically came first) without the action.

High Card - Pretty boring after a solid first episode, though it looks like the plot is going to pick up...after 5 episodes

Ippon Again - a good sports show. I worry that you may hate it for spoiler reasons.

Sugar Apple Fairy Tale - slavery and a shitty shoujo villain.

Saving 80,000 Gold etc - Haven't seen today's episode yet, but currently, I am more annoyed than amused

Reborn to Master the Blade - OP MC, but he's genderbent, so it sidesteps the harems these typically come with.

Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible - similar to teasing shows like Takagi or Nagatoro but without much of a hook. Very mediocre imo, but not terrible.

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague - super slow and repetitive. I stopped it

Ippon Again - awesome animation and cool judo. Mostly I like it but I'm not a fan of the main character

Also, I don't know if it's not on your list for "sequel" reasons, but you should really be watching Trigun!

Feels kinda crazy to just really go hard on this stuff when it's not in the manga at all but go off toei

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I only intended to watch three episodes in each just to see what they were like, but Mononogatari was interesting enough that I already broke that promise and caught up completely. It has a lot of elements that really interest me (supernatural stuff, setting up what could be a cute romance, good mix of action and comedy) but I'm not completely sold on it yet. The next episode looks like it'll finally characterize Botan, which I think will make or break this show for me.

Otherwise, High Card has a lot of potential (neat powers are always great, and it's giving me Kingsman vibes). Ippon Again is cute girls doing judo, which isn't groundbreaking but that's also all it needs to be so that's fine too. As of episode three, I'm still not sure if their advisor is a man or a woman. Like I'm 99% sure it's a woman but the students are treating them as a sexy bishonen so I dunno. Main girl is a bit of an airhead, but she has the same VA as Arisa from BanG Dream so I'm willing to forgive her.

This is why I don't love the new Haki animation style. It's just too much. I prefer the subtler manga look with focus on the black lightning and smaller auras or color to show exactly how it is being used.

That anime was announced last year. People thought it was originally an April Fool's joke when they first showed it on that day but they announced that it was real a couple months later.

Oh, huh, dunno how I missed this then.

The Sunshine crew is easily my favorite of all the LLs, so pretty excited for this.

I'm sad no one mentioned thoughts about Kaina of the Great Snow Sea. I think it's amazing after the first five episodes. I guess some people would be turned off by the CGI animation, but I think it looks fine. I'm a big fan of creative settings like this full of strange ideas (some sort of atmospheric canopy held up by gigantic trees, snow that clearly isn't real snow, etc) and all the strange insect creatures are giving me Made in Abyss vibes. I'm not entirely sold on the main plot just yet, but it still has time to come together and I'm hopeful that it will.

I tried to watch, but I just can't stand looking at Polygon Pictures shows.

I've only ever made it though one, Ajin, which I kind of liked, but everything besides that I've been unable to keep at it. Their stuff is so dull to look at.

I don't typically have a problem with CG, but I have a problem with their CG.

Only other thing from them I've seen is Knights of Sidonia, and I thought it looked fine too. I'm generally pretty easy-going when it comes to animation, though.

I try to just watch episodic shows so Kaina's not on my plate yet.

The industry lost a great voice.

In addition to Kaina, I watched three episodes of two other airing shows. The Magical Revolution is decent so far, but it hasn't won me over yet. Anis is a bit much, and her relationship with Euphie has moved unrealistically fast in just three episodes, at least in my opinion. I also don't like how the prince is a turbo-asshole for seemingly no reason, and I'm guessing we haven't seen the last of him. I'm still enjoying it, but I expected this show to be an easy favorite and it ain't there yet.

In fact, it looks like Magical Revolution won't even be my favorite isekai of the season! Saving 80,000 Gold is great so far. I've always been a big fan of concepts like this. It's an inherently fun idea to think about how one could use modern items and knowledge to change a less advanced world. Couple that with Mitsuha, who is quite possibly the best isekai protagonist I've ever seen, and this show is looking like a winner. She can warp between the two worlds at will, and she's already finding creative uses for that power. I also like how she's approaching the whole situation, including getting firearms training and lying her ass off to integrate herself into the world. It also has a lot of solid comedic moments. I'm only three episodes in, but I'm loving this so far.

Still, this season has a lot of winners so far. I'd rank each of those shows at least above average.

I finally got to see Trigun Stampede episode 3 (dub is behind, as usual). The show still isn't amazing, but this is slowly turning around into something interesting. There's hope for this yet. Then again, Trigun wasn't amazing until the second half (or really the last third) anyway.

I enjoyed Tropical Rouge Precure (though I haven't quite finished it), and some good things were being said about the new season, so I watched the two episodes available last night and am really excited about it. Hirogaru Sky is looking great with the more adventurous feel and a cool and fun protagonist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIFD5BJHwWE is a really well done transformation sequence. So I'm certainly going to stick with this one.

Absolutely no idea what's going on in Jujutsu Kaisen anymore. Backing out for now.

I would say now it's getting good! At least, hypothetically. Gonna have to see if this really pulls in all the elements we've been introduced to so far and makes it make sense.

The latest episode of High Card was entertaining enough that it bought itself 1 more week. Can't say the same for Saving 80,000 Gold In Another World.

I started watching Blue Lock, and after five episodes it's pretty good! I'm not sure I agree with the rationale of the whole program, I feel like training strikers to take suboptimal shots rather than passing to an open teammate would be a really bad idea in an actual game, but it's still a neat show so far.

Yeah I think the premise of Blue Lock (the program within the anime of the same name) is kind of dumb if you think about it too hard, but I'm okay with it from the standpoint that it's just a catalyst to create high(ish) stakes sports matches.

Even now, I swear that if you had all the exact same scenes in the Watamote manga but just presented them at different angles, it could totally be super disturbing, lol.

Also, not technically manga, but good lord I am fucking nooooot alright with what's going on in Gunnerkrigg Court right now. I keep taking it in chunks because of the whole 3 pages a week thing, but FUCK does that make it really difficult when I'm on edge about it like this.

Yeah it's certainly making some crazy choices lately.

Gunnerkrigg Court went to shit years ago when Tony returned. I even made an angry topic here awhile back when Annie stared directly at the fourth wall and said "No, my obviously abusive father isn't abusive", ugh. I said I would quit reading it then, but I've gone back and caught up a few times just to bask in the awfulness. GC has pretty art, but the writing has been terrible for awhile.

The most recent chapter even made me lol when everyone got angry at Annie for using the spell to track down Zimmy in what was apparently a bad location, only Annie didn't choose the location! I mean, what the hell. I could probably write an essay complaining about the baffling writing in Gunnerkrigg Court

Hm, I mean I actually still really dig the series a whole lot, I've never put it on hiatus because of a lack of interest, just for logistical reasons

I do definitely understand not liking that plot thread.

My issue with what's going I right now isn't "this is bad content", it's "WHAT'S HAPPENING IS BAD, I DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN".

It's been going in a pretty dark direction for a long time now, and this feels like it's going to be taking it even further.

There's been some ups and downs, but just like Homestuck I can say that I do still passionately love Gunnerkrigg Court.

I hope that animated series does end up getting off the ground.

Continuing my quest to check out airing anime, I watched the first three episodes of Farming Life in Another World. It definitely isn't amazing or anything, but it's charming so far. It has the usual dumb isekai stuff like the main dude having incredible abilities and getting a harem of sexy ladies for no reason. Still, so far he's just farming and slowly building structures and whatnot. I'm enjoying the slow pace and seeing the little plot of land expand.

When I watched that other crappy farming anime from last season, this is what I hoped it would be like. I'm pleasantly surprised with Farming Life so far.

We really live in a world where something like Rent A Girlfriend can get 3 seasons.
