Spain finishing second is like booking a semi final place. They win the group and they get Croatia followed by Brazil.

On paper throwing the match against Japan to take second seems like a good opportunity, but Germany is the type of team capable of running up the score and eliminating Spain.

I think the point that was trying to be made was had Costa Rica not have won, we could have seen a situation where Germany didn't advance and Costa Rica winning made that much less likely. No, Costa Rica are not supposed to just lose on purpose, but I think a lot of people were hoping for it to happen so the Germany/Spain became extra spicy. Once Japan lost, a lot of the excitement for that match just evaporated since it no longer meant Germany could be eliminated in that match had they failed to win.

So...

Spain loses, Germany Wins = 1st Japan, 2nd Spain UNLESS Germany outscores Costa Rica by a huge enough margin to overcome Spain's massive GD in which case Germany steals 2nd.

Spain loses, Costa Rica Wins = 1st Japan, 2nd Costa Rica (unless Costa Rica outscores Japan by 6 and they swap)

That seems like pretty good odds, especially if they can let Japan build enough of a lead to put points on the board themselves.

But is morocco that much more of a favorable matchup to risk it?

I doubt Germany are beating Costa Rica 7-0. They won't do it but Spain could easily throw the match for the easier draw.

It's not so much about the round of 16 match (based on their play Croatia isn't that much better than Morocco), but rather the quarterfinals where finishing first likely leads to a match against Brazil while finishing second you'd get a much easier opponent.

Ah, that does make more sense.

I don't think anyone will be throwing anything to be fair, but it's a good consolation if Spain somehow throw it.

I think Spain would benefit by having to face Brazil earlier in the knockout stages rather than potentially much later in the final. Brazil and european teams in the Quarter Finals usually doesn't go well for them (or they at least usually struggle).

I think the bigger danger for Spain throwing it is Costa Rica winning. That seems more likely than Germany winning by 7 goals.

There is no good way at throwing it in this situation. Even just going for the draw could backfire if Japan takes the lead if Costa Rica come back. We've seen the Saudis of all times comeback against Argentina.

There is no way Enrique is going to endanger his position like that because if it backfires, his job is at stake.
