Have Brazil ever lost to a lesser nation at a World Cup? The only time they've ever been humiliated was that 7-1 to Germany.

I guess it depends on your definition of lesser. For example, in the historical context of the World Cup I would call Belgium a lesser nation and Brazil lost to them in 2018, but as you already know that was during Belgium's golden generation. If we include golden generations then no Brazil hasn't been eliminated by a lesser nation.

I'm going back a few decades, and the only "lesser" nation end their run (so to speak) was Poland in 1974, but that was for a third-place consolation game anyway. All of their other losses since then have been to other elites.

Germany had before today only wo a single WC game since winning the tournament. It was against Sweden in 18, which wasn't there deserved but then brilliant Kroos free kick out of nowhere. I wonder if he could have made a difference here.

I mean given Brazil and Argentina's strength it's quite rare for them to be eliminated by non-European teams.

Spain had over 80% possession! 80%

They were trying to force the issue constantly and it was all Japan could do to stop them from having chances. Now on the other hand if you were talking about the final 30 minutes of the first half then Spain was the one casually passing the ball in their backfield before making a halfhearted attempt to press every 5 minutes or so. Completely passive and in my eyes significantly more defensive than anything from Japan in the 2nd half. It's possible that I'm just not educated enough about the sport, but that's how it felt to me anyways.

And as XIII said the ball was absolutely in. Part of the curvature of the ball was still above the line, they needed to show a better angle than the one that was from the field side.

So we just need Brazil to lose to Korea or Ghana then and that will be the cherry on the cake. Also i do question Spain a bit near the end of that game. You can't argue they looked like they were having a go but they weren't playing with a lot of urgency or packing the box.

Do you really think they see it that way? They could've advanced above them, but Uruguay knocked them out while South Korea and I guess Portugal knocked Uruguay out.

I was hoping for revenge and hardly feel like it was achieved.

Still got to see Eriksen, Bale, Lukaku, De Bruyne, Navas, Tata Martino and Flick out early.

Not many villains left at this World Cup.
