Probably maplestory. Granted I think I kicked that game for good.

Back in highschool it had ridiculous grinding that players were legitimately upset and crushed when they died since you lost 10% EXP that Probably took you 10 hours or more to get. Then they grew to a game that was riddled with transports that you had to wait 15+ minutes for to get to the next level, which caused getting to a boss was half a days work(mostly to sell teleport rocks). Now most of the cash shops items aren't transferable across characters anymore so in a system that gives bonuses for leveled alts, makes you need to buy items multiple times.

But there's just something about the flashy 2d action I love.

Depends on how you define "shitty".

Like, someone might say an Atari 2600 game is shitty because the graphics are terrible, but it could have fantastic gameplay (or you could have something like Tetris, where the gameplay is super-addictive but it looks kind of crap). While a modern player might think an old-school point-and-click adventure game is shitty because they don't like the gameplay or graphics, but someone who is into that style of gameplay might think it's brilliant.

I know the one thing I used to be really fond of that other people hated was FMV games. People act like they were the worst thing that ever happened to gaming, but I thought a lot of them were pretty cool or interesting when done right (like the cut-scenes in Wing Commander or the second Gabriel Knight game).

for games where I think the game is bad but I still like it:
Anachronox: the gameplay is partly awful and partly mediocre. the setting and characters are fantastic and make up for it.
Might and Magic IX: broken and unfinished as heck but there's still a good game hiding under the crap
Septerra Core: I think the game is actually pretty terrible but the concept is almost great (the game it's trying to be is great, but it doesn't get there)
Starfleet Command: I love the combat gameplay, but the overall game has almost no structure. it's very close to being a fantastic game if there was more to it (and I think there might be... but it's hard to find it).
Stellaris: I want to love this game and it is good in ways, but the design has so many flaws and has been a complete mess. it's getting better as the years go by, but it's literally taking years upon years (and DLC after DLC) to fix the game.

for games where the consensus is poor but I like the game:
Turok: Evolution: a lot of people hated it but I enjoyed my playthrough of it a fair bit
Street Fighter 2010: most people don't like it, I think, but I love it
Might and Magic X: most Might and Magic fans don't like it but it's one of my favorite games

(as an aside, for Might and Magic, there seems to be a LOT of people that got into 3D games for the first time playing M&M6... but the game is terrible and is easily the worst one IMO, but so many people are nostalgic as heck for it despite it doing nothing amazing besides being 3D.)

FMV games are a big one for me, but they have to have REALLY bad acting. Like the game Contradiction? Not an enjoyable game. Too well acted. But Tesla Effect (the latest Tex Murphy game)? *kisses fingers like an Italian chef* Amazing...

That's pretty much the same as how a lot of Westerners' first JRPG (and gateway into the genre) was FFVII, which it why it basically became their favorite in spite of being janky as hell, with a wonky translation, and far from the best story/setting/characters.

Add the fact that the plot had been entirely rewritten from its original concept. And dropped most of the philosophical themes and virtue-based gameplay. And was buggy as hell at launch.

But that was kind of a dark period for old-school PC game franchises in general. It's around the same time King's Quest essentially died. And when Gabriel Knight 3 was a clusterfuck of its own.

Speaking of Tolkien, there's a SNES game loosely based off of Fellowship that is absolute trash, but it has some shockingly good tunes in it. It also had multiplayer, which helped mitigate the appalling AI. Was fun to watch my parents play it.

I think making the collectables somewhat interesting (like the Wizard Trading Cards from the books) and occasionally giving you a chance to search the castle for treasure, went a long way to make up for the game's shortcomings

I contend that VIII was way worse than IX. It was everything that was bad with IX, but more so. I think it was also the first example of a game getting official patches after release to make it playable. And this was in 94, long before you could just let your computer automatically patch the game for you.

As for the other stuff:

1) The series never had a traditional leveling system, and usually only allowed small bits of growth. IX is no different.
2) The "Ultima lore" really only applies to like 2-3 games in the series. The rest of them were retrofitted after the fact. If anything, IX probably fleshes out the lore way more than any other game in the series.

I loved it. Beat it 3 times. Lots of people didn't like the grind, but having played Final Fantasy, grinding to me was part of the fun. The little enemy strongholds weren't that bad anyway. I would've done 10x the battle count. In today's world with autoplay and perks it would be really neat.

In some ways it was more Final Fantasy than other Final Fantasies. But it's hard to get your mind there without having been a kid at the time and categorizing Final Fantasy in the way that I do.

I feel like the people who get it will get it, but we won't be able to explain it.

I loved these old high contrast hp bars.

Was going to say this.

It was basically designed to be Baby's First RPG for people who weren't RPG fans, as a sort of simple gateway into the genre. It does a fine job of that. It's just that it came out after Final Fantasy 2 (IV) and had the Final Fantasy brand name on it, so for the most part the only people who played it were already Final Fantasy fans, and they all hated it for being way simpler than FF2/FFIV.

And the weebier people who knew about the Japanese market hated it because it seemed like it was the reason why the US wasn't going to get Final Fantasy V. And because it seemed like another example of the Japanese going "Ehh, Americans suck and can't handle hard games, better give them something dumbed down" like they did with FFIV and Super Mario Bros 2.

It also had more of a Seiken Densetsu vibe. So it was closer to "Final Fantasy Adventure" (which is what they released the first Seiken Densetsu/Mana game as in the US, just like they released the first few SaGa games as Final Fantasy Legend) than it was Final Fantasy.

If they hadn't put "Final Fantasy" on it, it probably would have sold far fewer copies, but been much better reviewed.

As much as the whole gun gimmick was silly, Shadow was actually a pretty solid game. I never ended up finishing the true ending because going through Westopolis 14 times (or whatever it was) got really tedious, so that could have been don't a lot better, but it was definitely a decent 3D Sonic game.

I played that a good 300hrs on Original Xbox. I liked the casino stuff. I wish they made casino games on console that weren't monetized and had good graphics.

It would be fun to have an rpg casino type game like they had on NES. Some of the mobile slots games are cool, but I'm not paying them what they want. It's cheaper to play a goddamn AAA MMO.

I never played DOAX2. I would've bought 3 and it's variants but I'm not importing shit. And honestly in a more grown up world, we had the option to unlock nudity for it as a digital unlock.

People make way too big a deal put of shit we have to have even during more conservative times.

People wonder why I like DOAX. Take away the females and I still would've liked it. You could've added the men in there and I would've collected all the gifts and clothing and played the casino stuff.

DOAX was just my kinda thing. The ass and titties just made it themed just for me. I like girly girls and how the game shows them. I mean, it's obvious. That's why they made it. Men and women can relate. Some people think it's all just about sex and it's not. I never jerked off to any game. But if I'm gonna spend 300hrs playing something, I'd hope it's nice on the eyes.

Take Elden Ring or any game like it. I pick a female and make her beautiful. Why? Because I'm forced to look at her. HOWEVER, In 1999 when I tried this in MMOs I found put real quick it wasn't worth it to me. Remember Schala from CT? I made a Dark Elf Enchanter girl as my first character and didn't realize just how voracious some guys on the internet are at going after girl characters.

I tried to ignore it at first, but it just got to me. The GM wouldn't let me change sex or name without deleting. I heard the 50s could do it if they were harassed, but not the 20s. That was 1999 though. Things have changed since then.

So anywho, I left her on my account and made a dark elf guy Necromancer. Necros could solo and didn't get the group xp penalty the enchanter got. Another dumb choice back then.

I could go into all about what happened to me in the 2 months I played her, but it's not worth it. You can just imagine. I swear, some people use mmos as dating sims. I called a bunch of females from the game and most of them were in their 30s and 40s. They just liked talking to me. My girlfriend at the time talked to a nurse who I met as a wood elf and became good friends with her in real life.

I feel like those early people from mmos aren't on the internet anymore. I mean, they are but people have drastically changed since then. It was like meeting people back then. Now we run into internet people. Unfiltered and not really representative of who they really are as much.

I don't even consider it a shitty game, but apparently others do...
Eretzvaju/Evil Zone is unironically my favorite fighting game of all time.
Basically every character was an anime trope (including a Super Sentai / Power Ranger character) and their story mode was presented like a tv show w/ narration promoting it. And it had absolutely ridiculous attack/chase sequences. All programmed w/ just 2 buttons (attack and defend) that generated 20+ moves for each character depending on range from the enemy, directional input, etc...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5evl89KsmLM

It's just a shame it had the Japanese vocal songs stripped out of the U.S. release. The original opening was so damn good!
