How strict are you?

"One sitting" to me, basically means not turning off the game.

It doesn't stop for things like going to the bathroom, or eating food.

Doesn't even have to be very quick breaks, can be 10-20 minutes.

So I suppose I'm not very strict with the criteria there.

I guess I'd only not count it as one sitting for a very extended break like going to bed or work where it would have just made more sense to save the game and reload when you came back.

Like to me even an hour long break would be fine if something urgent came up.

Maybe in speedrunning, but then the answer is, as long as the clock is still going then it's one sitting.

Even speedruns allow sleep breaks for long runs like 100% BotW

But the clock is paused in those runs, is it not?

Yeah, it never even occurred to me that anyone would think otherwise.

I'll do a sort of off brand version of them that I like to call Day-throughs. Where I have exactly 24 hours to beat the game, usually starting at midnight.

That way I can incorporate Sleep, food, and any other distractions that might come up.

I would consider "one sitting" to be one play session during the day, essentially from the first time you turn on the game until you go to bed that night. If someone says they bought a new game on release day, played it all day, and beat it in one sitting, I'm not gonna say "well actually you stopped for an hour to eat dinner so that's 2 sittings".

Although really I can't think of any cases where the technicalities of the phrase are going to matter even the slightest bit. In any common conversation, someone will be able to clarify what their "sitting" was. Even in a speedrun sense, games will have defined rules about how the timer is handled, regardless of many sittings they allow.

I would consider one sitting to mean without doing anything significant in between. I wouldn't count going to the bathroom or getting up and stretching, but eating dinner is kind of its own activity.

What if you eat while playing?

It's hard for me to relate to but I guess if you're multitasking you're not actually stopping the first activity.

If you play on the toilet, you can beat the game in one actual sitting.

Nope you arent even allowed to change your position in your chair.

If any of the atoms in your derriere moved, then it's no longer one sitting.

Surely this evolved from reading a book in one sitting? Like I'm sure people say that, and would have said it before videogames.

And that would definitely include bathroom breaks at least, right?

Could be a lot of activities that are typically done sitting down.

And to get it out of the way, bathroom breaks are not one of them. One visit to the bathroom is pretty much separate from the next by definition.

I try to beat my games in one standing

I beat all of my games walking 15 miles through the snow uphill both ways.

And I never complained once!
