What should be done about NFL OT?

I hear this is a hot subject.

No.

How I think it should be done:

Regular Season: Do away with overtime. If you can't win in regulation? Too bad.

Post-season: 15 minute quarter. No sudden death. 2 time outs for each team. If time runs out, it continues until someone wins. (Meaning if you're in the middle of a drive, and the score is tied, when time runs out you just continue that drive)

Heres a crazy idea. Just eliminate OT period.

If the score is tied at the end of the game, the team that tied it up loses. Playing from behind at the end of the game? You better be playing to win.

maybe not college rules exactly as written, but some variation thereof. For example you could still do kickoffs or start the offenses from the 50.

Im sure the league could come up with something. But it doesnt even matter what that rule is. There has never been a game in the entire history of the NFL (or AFL) that was 0-0 at the end of regulation.

This.

College OT rules from 5 years ago (I think they changed them, what, 3 years ago) though? Okay, now we're talking, though maybe push the starting point to the 35 to account for the better kickers in the NFL.

That said, I don't think the current NFL playoff OT rules are the worst. Back when it was true sudden death it was some BS but the current version isn't terrible.

No, college rules are awful.

The NFL sucked when you only needed to go 50ish yards and kick a field goal to win, but now that you have to score a touchdown, it's solid. I see no reason to change it.

OT should be penalty kicks.

Start with a 45 yards and go back 5 yards at a time until they miss.

There is absolutely no bias here at all.

Just guarantee each team gets the ball once
This still allows for the team that wins the coinflip to have an advantage. What they should do is compare scores after each team has had one possession. If still tied, do the same after 2 possessions, etc.

I do like the suggestion of Spot & Call to eliminate the luck of a coin flip. It's Leon's post but simplified- a sudden death overtime where the home team gets to "Spot" where to place the ball for the first drive. So the Chiefs say

"We'll start with the ball at the 50 yard line!"

The Bills obviously aren't happy with that plan and so they "Call" their own shot and say no, WE will start with the ball at the 50 instead and that's where they get it for their first drive.

If instead the Chiefs Spot at their own 1 yard line, the Bills decide they'd be crazy to Call- instead they let the Chiefs start with the ball. If they force a safety it's game over, Chiefs drive for a FG or TD it's game over, otherwise if they have to punt the Bills get the ball with (probably) great field position.

Just make the rules that if your team is up 8 points or more in OT your team automatically wins the game, and if you ever get the ball in OT while having the lead, the game is over.

I mean having both of these conditions makes no sense unless you're just trying to encourage teams to go for 2 because you can't win by more than 8 without getting the ball while having the lead, barring a defensive score (at which point you'd just go down instead of trying to score because you've just won)

I like the idea of using the college overtime rules so each team gets an offensive possession. However, the NFL should eliminate field goals all together in overtime and teams must go for 2 every time if they score.

Have both offenses and defenses on the field simultaneously, starting at each 40-yard line. The winner is determined by whoever scores first *or* turns the ball over first, going play-for-play. Double the action, double the commentary, no field goals. If both teams score or turn it over on the same play they do a 2-point conversion shootout until one team prevails.

It makes the team who has the ball first have a way to win outright but make it so no one can just win by a field goal either.

if first team gets a TD and gets the two I think you can end the game. If you can't stop all that you prolly deserve to lose
