I will never get the complaints about the coin toss. The game has to end some time, and if your defense sucks this much, you have no real complaints about not moving on. Maybe change the rule that the other team gets to possess but has to go for 2 if the other team is up 7 or something, but if I'm a Bills fan, I'm way more upset about that 4th quarter choke by my defense than not getting the ball back in OT.

But it's not fair. After 60 minutes, defenses are almost always completely gassed. OT has an incredible advantage for offense. Whoever wins the coin toss has a huge advantage.

Overtime, both teams get one possession and you HAVE to go for two. If it's still tied after the first two possessions, next score wins.

I get the argument for OT rules of, "play defense". But I think there's also an argument, if we accept that in some situations going into OT, both defenses are helpless due to fatigue and both offenses are rolling, that the more entertaining thing is to see which offense fails first, instead of whether an exhausted defense can pull one out of their hat.

In other words, with a lot of the rest of the league tilting toward offense, isn't it reasonable to also tilt OT towards highlighting offense? If you go into OT in a situation where both defenses will fail, then it really is the coin flip deciding it pretty much, instead of seeing which offense can't keep it up for as long as the other.

Because the next time the NFL changes the rules it will be to something even more confusing/stupid. Saying both teams get one possession is the easiest thing but people still fight against it for reasons i don't get.

You have data to back that up? I think I remember reading the coin toss gave a very marginal advantage.

Everyone besides the rushing 4 were 20+ yards back while every single reciever for KC was within 20 yards. All that when a 20 yard gain gets them into field goal position, so yea it was.

No. 35 for Buffalo was maybe 5 yards downfield and gave Kelce a free release inside like he was guarding the sideline or something for no reason. That had nothing to do with prevent.

Edit: Sorry, it was 39 - not 35 - but either way, they weren't playing prevent.

As of the end of this regular season, I believe the stats on the OT coin toss under the current rules is:

52% the team that gets the ball first win
42% the team that kicks off to start OT wins.
6% tie

So it's an advantage but not "they always win."

So season's basically over and I'm officially just in it for the memes now. There is no more interesting football to be played. The rest are blowouts.

The niners have no chance with Jimmy G. The Rams aren't reliable either. Best we can hope for is a comedy of errors. But probably the Rams win easily.

The Bengals are everyone's favorite team remaining but they're running into a buzzsaw. The Bengals are still like two years early for where they actually are. You could say they're playing with house money, but realistically they get demolished.

Chiefs also demolish Rams. They couldn't finish off Tom Brady and no one else; they're not going to keep up. At least Stafford gets to go to a SB.

I wouldn't count on next week's games being blowouts (I could see each being a one-score game), but I'm 99% certain we're getting Chiefs/Rams.

Ever since Goodell took over as commish in 2006, the Super Bowl has always been "marketable" in terms of the players and teams that participate. AFC QBs are always household names like Brady, Manning, Ben, and Mahomes (the one exception being Flacco in 2012, which had the "Harbaugh Bowl" appeal). With the NFC teams you sometimes get an underdog story like the '08 Cardinals or the '17 Eagles, but on the other hand you also have the travesty that was the 2018 NFC Champ game, which shafted the 50th-ranked TV market (Saints) in favor of the 2nd-ranked TV market (Rams). The NFL desperately wants to grow in the LA area, so if the 49ers play well on Sunday, expect the refs to help LA at the end.

Bottom line: The NFL wants a sexy matchup. They want casual fans to get excited about the game. They want to expand their market. They want to charge out the ass for SB ads. And unless Mahomes or Stafford suffers a brutal injury, we're getting Chiefs/Rams.

As for the Chiefs/Rams game itself, I'd pick the Rams to win that game because of their defensive front.

And how is that any better than: Bills get a chance to match, trot down the field and score. Chiefs get the ball back in TRUE SUDDEN DEATH, trot down the field again and score? I mean, the 2nd time they would only need a FG to win it, right?

At a certain point, the people asking for both teams to possess would cause the game to inevitably evolve into the college OT rules. And that includes the no kickoffs and shortened fields because the strain on the players bodies would be too much.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. If you can't play D, you don't deserve to win.

Bills/Chiefs with college OT rules would've been electrifying at the rate both QBs were playing. Not saying college OT rules are the answer, but imagine that duel going back and forth on short fields.

If they change the NFL OT rules, I'm for "each team possesses the ball at least once." Both offenses and defenses should see the field regardless of whether a TD is scored.

It was more a general statement than anything particular to that game. It's not like that game was punt-less though, so there were some D stops. Also, didn't quite realize this at the time but no turnovers in that game. Only a missed FG by KC.

All offense can be just as boring as all defense. The former is better for the casual fan, driving viewership, and the bottom line but I don't think it makes for a better experience when points are being put up on every drive. It's still a "one note" game. It's the swings in momentum that make the game interesting.

Of course, I understand that game was an aberration, because Mahomes and Allen are very likely the 2 best QBs in the NFL. We likely got the Super Bowl 3 weeks early.

I don't disagree with the idea of this, but the winner in a game like yesterday will still be "whoever wins the coin toss".

I'd rather see the team that ties up the score at the end have to kick off. It's just weird that the Bills had to defend two drives without their offense being able to get on the field.

I see what you're saying, but it could open up strategies involving 2-pt conversions. If the Chiefs score first, do they kick the XP or go for two? If they miss the two, Buffalo needs TD+XP to win. If the Chiefs kick the XP, Buffalo can score a TD and go for two to win it (or miss the 2-pt and Chiefs win).

Not sure that this would best way of doing OT, but it would add drama.

The issue here is that not all end-of-regulation ties happen on the last play of the game.

I think the Ravens proved this year that 2-pt strategies are the worst. They absolutely would have been bounced right away but they would have made the playoffs if they just went with the best god damn kicker the league has ever seen.
