He talks about how he gets Thai food every few weeks and that he loves food from Taiwan. I tell him every time that Thai food is from Thailand, not Taiwan, and he literally can not accept it. He just goes "h-huh?!?!?" and changes the subject as if he can not accept Thailand is a real place.

I could understand the confusion they call it Thai food, but if you go by how it sounds Taiwan and Thailand both are pronounced the same way to start.

You see this thing often how some people will not reference something correctly because they view all Asian stuff as the same.

So he either mistakenly calls Taiwanese food Thai, or he thinks Thai food is from Taiwan.
Personally, I don't pay attention to where a recipe comes from. I just order the specific items I like.

As a chef I always pay attention to this.

I've never heard of any prominent Taiwanese foods. Besides from Japanese and Chinese food being Kings of the Asian world cuisine, it's always vietnamese, Thai, and Korean food

The underlined ones look as though they originated in China.
I know especially hotpot did, though it seems every Asian Country has a variation on one. I have only ever had a Sichuan Hotpot and oh my god it was amazing.

The beef noodle soup looks amazing though:

My favorite asian soup is probably Vietnamese Pho but Chinese Hot and Sour soup comes close.
As much as a weeb I am, I have never liked Ramen nearly as much but its still great.

Thai restaurants are so prevalent in the US because the nation of Thailand actually helps people financially that want to open a Thai restaurant in the US.

It works out great for them because all the good Thai food is exported from Thailand. Its pretty cool imo

I mean if you want to go look it up yourself, they have the origins of the food documented down to the region of China it came from, and the dynasty.

But we should go back to talking about our favorite Asian dishes, that was more fun.

Next dish I want to try is Banh Mi, which is a Vietnamese sandwich that uses french bread since France colonized them at some point in history.

For anyone that actually knows literally anything about Taiwan this has obviously not been the case since, at the absolute latest, Chiang Ching-kuo died in 1988. Hell, even despite his public obstinacy it was probably extremely obvious to Chiang Kai-shek by the 60s that there was no chance of Taiwan taking back control of the mainland. Taiwan maintains legacy claims to disputed islands and such so that China doesn't attempt to assert active control of them because they're "ungoverned".

Formosa is the alternate name for Taiwan. Manchuria is the part of China that Japan cut off in the 30s and turned into a puppet state.

China does indeed claim ownership over Taiwan's land claims but if Taiwan were to legally vacate them then China would assert active ownership rather than passively usurping Taiwan's ownership.
