Maybe they are nice if you have a really expensive one, but every run of the mill dishwasher I have used is trash.

They don't get dishes nearly as clean as handwashing, you have to prewash dishes pretty well to start with, and they take hours to run.

Better off to just spending 20 minutes handwashing

I have a cheap Kenmore dishwasher that came with the house, and it still does a great job cleaning with minimal pre-rinsing. It's just noisy and takes a long time compared to premium models.

The dishwasher at the apartment I used to live in was total crap though, so I ended up just washing dishes by hand.

I can't say I've ever had that many problems with them? there are certain specific foods that don't wash off properly and you have to mostly wash by hand first but other than that they work great?

also yes they take a wilhe to run which is why you run it overnight

It's more accurately called a "dish sanitizer".

modern dishwashers are more environmentally friendly than handwashing

Mine is quite new, but a pretty cheap entry-level Whirlpool. Works very well, but I have to use the "sensor" setting (normal just doesn't work as well) and use good detergent pods.

I read that, and I know they have came a long way. But I seriously use only like 3-4 cups worth of water after each wash. Most days I just have utensils to wash since I use paper plates more than my glass one.

Now if I had to wash a full sink of dishes, I do see the efficiency.

Yeah when you think about it, if youre washing dishes in a full sink youre not truly getting much beyond the first couple dishes actually clean bc of all the contamination from each dish

esp dishes where you handled raw meats

I actually skimmed around that video out of curiosity, lol.
I don't see that significant a difference from his test of "with prewash" and "without", though. Like, a little bit, but not significant enough to change anything.
I do pre-wash some stuff, like the plate-spanning cheese on those plates in the video, but I leave smaller stuck-on traces behind and my dishwasher with its cursed pods gets them just fine.

That's true because we don't use 3-compartment sinks, but dishwashers sanitize by using high enough heat to kill off most bacteria. You can't get that by handwashing without sanitizer solution. Soap is not sanitizer.

He was going with worse case scenarios and how to make the dishwasher work better if you are having problems. Though the biggest difference was the cleanliness of the dishwasher itself if you put detergent in the prewash cycle.
