It reminds of the quote from Futurama's video game episode where Fry says "I had another guy!" to refer to an extra life. Even way, way back in the ancient days of the early 2000s I thought that was weird line.

I've never heard anyone refer to an extra life as a free guy. And I've certainly been around long enough to have been in the gaming zeitgeists where that would be a thing.

When I specifically saw this topic title I said "oh yeah" and remembered what it meant, but I never would have made that connection on my own.

I also never would have realized there was a movie called Free Guy without seeing this topic though

The movie itself was actually quite good.

All you really need to know going in is that Ryan Reynolds is playing an NPC in an online game (that looks like it would be based on GTA or Just Cause) and he starts to develop self awareness.

Obviously they aren't going to get the gaming elements exactly right, but they got them right enough that as someone who is experienced with games I wasn't cringing the whole movie like I feared I might.

very funny with good action, would watch again.

I'd seen a lot of advertising for it, but I think being delayed so many times for so long hurt it. It always seemed like they didn't have a chance to make a big marketing campaign before the release would be pushed back yet again, and now that it finally came out I guess they weren't confident in the market or they had already exhausted the advertising budget because they stuff they put out this time felt more low-key.

I think the movie could be overshadowed by Black Widow in terms of press and coverage, but most likely not by the quality. Didn't hear good things about BW and not surprised

I remember seeing the trailer for this movie pre-covid, but didn't remember the name and had to read the synopsis to realize this is the movie that was supposed to come out a while back

I saw it last night. It was good.

The fact that I saw it is evidence that whatever press they were doing had to have reached me, because I haven't seen a movie since Avengers Endgame and tend to average about one movie a year without considering the pandemic. It feels like I've been inundated with exposure to it over the last few weeks, ranging from youtube ads to articles spammed across yahoo to word of mouth.

I do wish the movie were able to come out as it was originally scheduled as sales is definitely going to be worse than they would be otherwise
