The population size is too large to make it completely free unfortunately.

That doesnt hold water when larger countries with less wealth have managed it just fine.

Healthcare must be socialized. Full stop.

This isn't how things work. The US has more resources because of its larger population. It's why population growth is considered such a crucial metric for economic growth.

Elder care is insane, too.

My coworker was looking for a place to care for his elderly mother-in-law. She has dementia and requires a walker to get around. Found a place that offers an affordable, flat rate 4-year plan (because I guess statistically most residents don't make it through the 4 years).

Well she's still kicking and once that plan expired they jacked the rates up to $9,000 a month.

So they start looking for a different place. They discover that Medicaid doesn't kick in unless you're essentially broke. They found a place that will take her, but won't accept Medicaid until she's burned through her life savings.

But hey we have cool missiles and fighter planes and billionaires get tax breaks and go to space so that's cool I guess

Elder care is ridiculously overpriced. It's just a scam. Like the Better Call Saul thing I bet that isn't completely fictional either.

Yeah, it tends to be one of the less talked about things in the US. Even conservatives that talk about cutting the budget, seem to blind to the rising health care cost even though, at this point the US government spends more on medicare & medicaid than even the military by a large margin and that is not even talking State Health care expenditures, which can be pretty high as well. It is ludicrious how much we spend on it, as we are pretty much approaching socialized countries health care expenditures and even exceeding them in certain cases at the governmental level on a supposedly private system that still have to purchase ourselves.

Yeah and insurance sucks. I spending $300 a month for insurance that pretty much covers nothing until I meet a $8,000 out of pocket and the cost of anything is mind boggling. I mean, even the price to do something routine like put a cast on a broken bone can cost up to $14,000. Gosh forbid you have to do any surgical procedure that can run in the $100,000's. I just don't know where all this money is going. It certainly is not going to the doctors, they would be all scrouge mcduck rich at the prices that insurance charges for these things and the insurance still thinks they are cost too much and wants to replace them with Nurse Practitioners all the time. It just seems like a massive scam at this point

Food is getting pretty bad as well. If you shop carefully it's not too bad still, and you can certainly survive, but the cost for any kind of meat is getting insane. It costs more to eat at home and buy hamburger meat, then it does to eat out.

It was $10/pound of 80% ground beef for instance. You can literally go to Jack in the Box and get 1/4 pound meat patties for 1.25$ a pop, so a full pound of fully cooked and prepared hamburger is only $5, but buying it at the store is twice that.

That being said, most places that are NOT fast food (and even many fast food places if you don't buy sides of hamburger patties and buy the actual burger) have increased prices drastically. You basically can't get a basic 1/4th burger most places for less than $5, or a simple value meal for less then $10.

Eating out, solo, is generally over $20 a pop. Getting anything delivered by uber eats is always over $30.

Even if you JUST ate out once a day, at this point that would be $600 a month.

So yeah, you can still grocery shop for $50/week if your really careful, but what you will be eating now is not nearly as good as even a year ago, and if prices keep raising your gonna see even the cheapest stuff getting expensive enough that people won't be able to live on less than $100 a week soon.

lmfao no it shouldn't

it needs to be cheaper, and should be cheaper given the sheer amount of it being produced.

I question whether we will develop that kind of capability

especially if we are overwhelmed by extreme weather and crop failures/desertification both of which are increasing exponentially

I love recently being charged $300 to have some vials of my blood run through a machine... and that's not even a particularly bad one, but come on. Why even be paying the insurance company so much a year when I would've just paid that without insurance too? Oh but I would've had to pay for the expensive doctor visit that preceded the blood draw, which is like the only thing they pay for, I guess that's how they get you
