I remember watching a Canada vs Russia hockey game when I was a kid and I remember being blown away that at one point they played the Tetris theme. Then later in life I realized that it was actually a legit song and Tetris didn't come up with it.

To be fair, video game music has become a lot more legitimate in recent years. The industry has come a lot way from the midis from 8-bit and 16-bit games...

Oh.

>_>

Granted, they've got reasonably good music, I suppose.

Granted, they've got reasonably good music, I suppose.

Even looking at older themes, they often hold up well when fully orchestrated. The biggest thing that holds them back tends to be the fact that they're designed with relatively short loops in mind, so it's often necessary for an arranger to throw in some variations and come up with a way to end the song. In some ways, though, being so simple actually makes them easier to arrange, since there's a lot more room to embellish them and make them more interesting when you don't have to worry about conflicting with more complex parts.

Modern VG music, though, is indeed pretty indistinguishable from anything else in its genres, quality-wise. There's a lingering stereotype of it all being nothing but beeps and boops, but that's mostly just ignorant elitism.

A lot of classic video games had to have really good writing to make up for the limitations in sound

From what I could see, all the songs were also from Japanese studios. Japan's just flexing.

To be fair, Japan generally doesn't pay attention to the fact that anyone outside of Japan actually makes video games. So they probably didn't know any Western video game music.
