In media or otherwise

some are definitely way more overused than others

"Entropic" decay. Might overlap with reality shifting a bit but in a more "natural" way

Yeah solar was the wrong word, I meant just space catastrophe

also Rapture was just to give an example, there's definitely others (smiting, angel/demon war, immortal being rising from hell in a way that's somehow not a kaiju?)

What does This Is the End count as? Like I know it ended up being the rapture, but all the shit before then was really cool. I guess natural disaster?

Space catastrophe:

Planet collision, black hole, strange matter chain from deep space, etc.

I've always found unstoppable forces from space to be the most terrifyingly interesting.

I'd still count it as religious/rapture, since all the disasters were caused by the rapture itself (like earthquakes opening up pits directly into hell)

Nuclear is a bit overused but it's still the scariest and most interesting to me. Something about images of post-destruction really resonates with me; a twisted beauty, the poignant loneliness and emptiness, how survivors cope with their new world & reality as they realize there's no one to blame other than humanity itself. It's the plausibility of it that really gets me at its core I think.

Plus it gets points for technically including Godzilla in its ranks since kaiju is probably my second favorite.

Anyone who likes space catastrophes should definitely watch Local 58 and Gemini Home Entertainment if you haven't already:

Especially the latest video of Gemini:

This stuff is so good.

Robots tend to make everything better, even the end of times. Perhaps a bit overdone, though as real world tech advances, the exact nature of this event evolves too. I like that the two options in parenthesis are polar opposites...one is tech failing us, the other is us failing tech.

That said, the unexplainable option has some allure to it...I imagine not dwelling on the whys of it all would free up some creative space that could then be spent on other areas of the narrative. What if the color green decided to become sentient and declare humanity a threat? What if the moon were swapped with a resource hungry evil Earth? Uh-oh, 'time' is literally running out and when it does, the universe is finished! Lots of weird things can happen here, the only limit is one's imagination.

Always thought seeing an alien race way more advanced than ours visiting Earth purely for resources, treating us like bugsvery interesting apocalypse.

Also this topic is inspired by me reading Stephen King's "Sleeping Beauties" (where every woman in the world who falls asleep becomes cocooned and can't wake up)

I think my favorite is something like "overuse of Earth's natural resources", which might overlap a bit with natural disaster but I guess I'm viewing it as a distinct thing here. Something like the anime Girls' Last Tour or from what I remember the beginning of Interstellar, though it's been many years since I saw that and also I think that leans a bit more strongly to the "natural disaster" bit.

Impossible/unexplainable because then you get the mystery element on top of some potentially really interesting stuff.

Probably tech after that. Kaiju and Space are close too.
