Rules:
- Listen to both songs in a given match, at least through the loop time provided (to make sure you don't skip before you've heard the whole thing!)
- Please consider the loop point listed when judging the song; if a video loops one minute 5 times, don't treat it as if it's a repetitive 5 minute song
- If it's a match between your favorite song ever and a song you despise, still LISTEN TO BOTH! Votes can and will be disqualified if there is suspicion songs are not being listened to, and you may be discounted for the rest of the contest for repeat offenses.
- No alt accounts, no rallying or begging, etc., etc.... You only get one vote! Swapping votes is alright, just make clear that you've already made a vote and are swapping.
- Make clear what your voting options are! Please keep votes separate from any comments, and use the titles given in the topic post.

- Vote based on the links provided, and not other sources of audio. Links are specifically chosen for best quality and the like.
- Don't discuss vote tallies in this thread, or in other threads, as they may influence votes. Likewise, please refrain from looking at the running tally before voting.

Voting Period:
- Today's matches will last 24 hours from the time of posting, or 24 hours from 10pm Eastern, whichever is the later time.
- Please note this may mean that two topics will be active at the same time!

All three matches are hilariously lopsided (although the last for slightly different reasons). Listening to the other songs is merely a formality, and doing proper writeups seems completely extraneous

("final wish of mist" being the official tl of the title makes this so unnecessarily hard)

Deceiver, trace the melody of blood
Hear on the wind, beckoning you to the spirit world, the song of my corpse

In the dazzling village built from a myriad
of sinful ends and evil halts lurks the beast

The Final Wish of the Mists: for you to unflinchingly shove me from behind
And launch yourself off of my back before I have the chance to curse your name

(Win or wipeout / how do you defend?) In words born hidden
(One or onslaught / how do you defect?) Comes the ancient one
(Lie or lament / how do you decide?) Grazing on wild hair
(Fate or fallout / how do you detect?) (The author mocks us all)

Believer, why don't you see that the hand
coiling about your back is shaggy and clawed?

The heartrending plea ultimately becomes ashen worship
Like a mirror of perfection, before me laughs the beast

The Final Words of the Mists: Dart up that hill, never looking back
Escape before the last fragments of my flesh are exhausted

Once the mists clear, you and I can leave this place.
Once the mists clear, we'll wash away your regrets
Once the mists clear, we'll bury your mountain of blood, bones, and bodies in the depths of oblivion
...The mists refused to clear, and on the seventh day, the beast howled.

The Final Mist never comes. How many game overs have we faced so far?

(--Please don't forget--)

Eyes glisten in the final mist as the bellows of death draw near
All that I loved in your visage steadily disappears, and yet
The Final Oath of the Mists: I'll point my silver arrow at you and say,
"Until the day we can consign all of this to dreams, farewell."

(Hell or heaven / which do you predict?) Grace us with your presence, heavenly might
(Use or undo / which do you prepare? ) That, in the innocent flames
(Null or nothing / which do you pretend?) The eternal night
(Tell or terrorize / which do you prefer?) May burn to ash

Central Tower "Axis Pillar"
Dialgas Fight to the Finish!
Towards the Horizon

-(edgy guitar is TASTY, and the high synth accompanying is great. I swear i've heard the melody at 1:17 in some other song i love before and i can't place what. the jumpiness of style+key every other bar at 1:38 is pretty neat)-

-[Axis Pillar is my favorite song in the contest, and 2nd favorite song in the world.
~~~~~
Warning: the rest of this writeup is quite heavy, personal, and serious, put in spoiler tags due to its sensitive content:
~~~~~
i don't really think there's any point in the past decade or so of my life where i have considered any path other than the ambiguous goal of "professional musician (and/or game developer)". Once I decided on that path, i stuck to it, and never looked back, which was/is an incredibly risky decision for anyone. That focus payed off, my entire life is music now, which has many effects on my psychology that i never foresaw
~~~~~
Recently (today) i wound up watching a video by Benn Jordan (better known as the idm artist "The Flashbulb") that talked about the different stages people who make that decision as a career trajectory go through. but there was one line in particular that stuck out: if asked the question "what will you do if it doesn't work out?" his thoughts were "I guess I'll just die". he didn't mean this in a serious suicidal way, but in the sense that "this is the only option". I related to this super hard; i had/have no backup plan, i have no other interests or skills unrelated to music/gamedev. If I'm not doing this, I'm not doing anything. I "made it", i have no shortage of work, but if i hadn't? It forces me to think about how important to my life it is that there ARE people who want the specific niche of a jazz pianist/vibraphonist who can easily handle complex polymetric layers; or "someone who knows how to make synthesizers make weird ear-shattering FM sounds"; if there weren't people who wanted those things, i wouldn't be able to live. (given that my tastes and skills are niche: this is why i'm such a staunch defender of the niche, and often feel threatened by those who tend to defend "popular=better" / "niche=worse")
~~~~~
this creates a conundrum for me though; my entire self-worth is hinged upon the idea that the things I've attained the skills for (and consequentially: the things i enjoy listening to) are seen as valuable by others. this explains a lot of my responses to disagreements in taste being things i respond to with hostile fight-responses as if someone just told me they were going to stab me to death. taste disagreements are wired in my brain practically to be the equivalent of a death threat, no exaggeration. As a result of THAT intensity, it has become important for my health and safety to find scenarios of validation to keep myself emotionally afloat. i don't mean this quite in a shallow "only surround myself with nice people" deluding myself way, but it's important for me to have reminders that there is a value to what i have chosen to do with my life, and that others think so. A comment like "this isn't music" on something i enjoy (and being able to be payed to make similar things being something important to my survival) reads as "you don't deserve to live" because it's a comment that implies that the path i make a living through doesn't deserve to exist, which leads to the feeling of "I guess I'll just die"
~~~~~
One fine day, August 11 2017, I got a private message on twitter from someone in japan, it read "I want to say thank you for your great musics. Because your music remand me my old friend 'Wataru Ishibashi' who passed away 3 years ago. I hope your like it. and Im keep rooting for you. (sorry about my bad english)". I was shocked...to learn my music was being considered to fill the void of this person's lost friend? but who was Wataru Ishibashi?! he was a member of Falcom Sound Team jdk of course! at the time i didn't quite understand this message, I could tell ishibashi and ishibashi's irl friend both liked prog and unconventional harmony and things, but the music i'd known was ishibashi's didn't sound particularly similar to my style to my own ears. Regardless, it was a shocking reminder of the transience of life, and is probably the sweetest compliment that has ever been given to me by anyone. I listened to a bit of Ishibashi's music and loved it, though still wasn't sure which tracks he did for falcom games (this was prior to leaks confirming/near-confirming majority of ishibashi's contributions). I still cry when i think about this message, and it remains one of the most important things for me to have ever heard someone say.
~~~~~
being a musician often leads to quests for validation through comparison. This applies to the whole paragraph-above-the-above about needing to be reminded there's value in what i do; but also just as a casual common conversation topic. It's so easy to think "aw yes [x] is so good because he knows how to play /exactly/ like pat metheny" or whatever, "you're the closest i've heard any drummer get to virgil donati!" "your production is near indistinguishable from Autechre!!" are compliments i'd see given to friends. and i would sometimes feel inadequate. Who was i? was i just...me? that was all fine, i actually value the idea that my voice is too unique for comparision (and people valued my uniqueness), but it would certainly help with my perpetual insecurity if i could ever hear music out there that remotely sounded like what I wrote. I felt like this lone crazy person, and i'm not quite as skilled at imitation as many others i knew. Yasuhisa watanabe was the closest, but not quite it at the time. I did not know of anyone who really did the sorts of timbre+chord+rhythm+etc combinations that i leaned toward, i knew nothing out there that sounded like what I did
~~~~~
One fine day, July 30th, 2019, I got a private message from someone named "math-addict" on tumblr, a suggestion of partially odd time song to post on my blog. it was called "Central Tower 'Axis Pillar'", from Trails in the Sky SC. the instant I heard this track, my mind was BLOWN, like ...holy fuck?! it literally sounded like i made it. it had every trait I seeked in music: unusual individual chords, unusual movements between chords, hypnotic repetition, it was POLYMETRIC, it had glassy futuristic ~90s synths, it had IDM-like percussion, it had natural-sounding conventional folk-like elements, it had alien-sounding weird prog elements. it was ME, it was everything I wanted to hear at the same time!!! I did not even think it was possible for there to be a song i enjoyed this much. I frantically looked up the composer, and of course, it was Wataru Ishibashi. This explained everything about the message his friend had sent to me. Suddenly I knew why I reminded him of his friend. by this point, falcom composer leaks were pretty full (and speculations likely to be accurate based on heavy research) and i could just look up everything confirmed/suspected to be Ishibashi, and I truly fell in love. He's absolutely one of my favorite composers, but nothing is quite as dear to my heart as the perfection of Axis Pillar to my taste. a couple weeks ago, I learned that this "math-addict" person who showed me this song, was the same person as "bebr117", that was a mindblowing moment of revelation, to say the least.
Warning: this is continued from a writeup that is quite heavy, personal, and serious, put in spoiler tags due to its sensitive content:
~~~~~
One horrible day, July 10th, 2020, I had decided that I'd had enough of this world. 2020 was a difficult year for many people, but a particular set of inescapably damaging-to-me-specifically private scenarios in my life felt hopeless. Life no longer felt worth enduring, or even something i was capable of tolerating. I decided to end my time here, and my vision was slowly fading to black as my last breath had been quite some time ago. I'd earlier posted a message alerting the world to my departure on Twitter, and for the most part did not care what happened next. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that I got a message from a friend of mine, her name DV-i. I didn't really think i should bother to look, i just wanted to end all interactions i could have with anyone ever. but my curiosity got the better of me, i read some pretty convincingly concerned text begging me to respond, begging me to live. I was talked out of my attempt to end my time here, and regret how close I got to death that day.
~~~~~
wanting to end everything isn't foreign to me, i've always struggled with it to a degree. One of the easiest reminders that I should not leave though, is remembering the impact the loss of Wataru Ishibashi had on his friend (and how I was filling the void for him). Especially as like, even i personally felt a loss once I realized I'd never get to hear new music by someone who'd become one of my favorite composers of all time. Some of the only music i've found that even properly reminded me of myself. Playing back Axis Pillar...well, i've still never heard a song that sounds more like me than this song to my ears, and i would hate for the world to lose someone else who fulfills such a particular niche. more than once Axis Pillar has been helpful to remind me of the significance of every individual person's life, why i'm alive, and why i want to stay alive. Once someone is gone, all that is left behind is their Legacy. I have not done even close to everything I've wanted to do in my life, and i need to make the most of my one chance at it
~~~~~
it still boggles my mind that Wataru Ishibashi and DV-i faced each other in round 4 last year. Quite literally: i do not think i would still be alive if it weren't for the combination of the both of them. (given that bebr is SOMEHOW the reason i know about Axis Pillar too, i may need to add him to the list as well)
~~~~~
every person on this world is unique, and irreplaceable. when someone is gone, they don't come back. There are people on this board who are no longer with us. I still remember them, and have fond memories, but that's all that's left. Many of the most important musicians to the evolution of the history of music I care about are gone: Allan Holdsworth, Lyle Mays of Pat Metheny Group, Keith Emerson, and, Wataru Ishibashi... Their voices are irreplaceable, but they live on in the hearts of others. I'm thankful that our memories of them still remain, but no longer are any interactions with them possible. but more important than music. People are irreplaceable bundles of memories, personalities, relationships that you can't just replicate, everyone on this earth means something to someone.
~~~~~
i'm worried i'll regret being as open as i've been here, i actually dislike talking about what exactly my personal life is on the message board of board 8 itself, even if i'm open about it on discord. but axis pillar is too personally important to me to feel right understating the intensity of its importance to me and requires me to be open about things i wouldn't normally to get the point across (please be respectful of my privacy if you're someone who knows my real name/etc)
]-

-{axis pillar may be the song in the world I like the sound of the 2nd most, but it is the song in the world that is important to me the 1st most. I'm not sure i'm going to be able to look at this thread today.}-

-----

-(i like dialga's fight to the finish more than i used to and i loved it from the start (even if i used to complain about its presence relative to other pmd2 songs, at this point I don't mind that it's this track of all tracks). Part of it's because parallel harmony in the melodies of folky stuff (ie the string melody at 1:27-1:54 ) has become one of the most powerful sounds to me lately. I actually blame PSO2 and Saori Kobayashi's Panzer Dragoon contributions, they're just so wonderfullly lazer cutting and create a new timbre without using a new instrument? if that makes sense. like you can play those notes on a piano and it'll feel like you're playing more than just a piano, ijdk i think it sounds cool. I've always liked sounds like it, but that used to only apply to "inside a computer" sound like mmbn, now it applies to stuff like this too. uhh i could go on about everything else i like but it'd be nothing new i haven't said before. "good emotionally powerful chord-melody interactions and stuff" -why pmd2 music is cool)-

-[there's some surprisingly dense harmonies in this lily thing. the intro is like "what if a touhou song was more rhythmically ambiguous" (not that there aren't also touhou songs that are rhythmically ambiguous), but it gets even more cool sounding once you start to hear the crunchy harmonies later in to the track!]-

-{wait is this another pokemon vs touhou again}-

I like the dark feel of Mist. Good stuff. Axis Pillar a worse version of other Sky music whoops.

Yuri has a funky rhythm game-y feel to it. Dialga kinda feels like a weak knockoff of that cool Zelda song we had earlier in the contest.

Central Tower "Axis Pillar"
Dialgas Fight to the Finish!
Towards the Horizon

Final Wishes of the Mist (5.7 - 54th place) / Central Tower "Axis Pillar" (9.7 - 2nd place)
Dialgas Fight to the Finish! (9.3 - 8th place) / Subete no Yuri wa Chiri Hatete (6.8v - 47th place)
Towards the Horizon (7.6 - 31st place) / FLIGHTLESS (6.8 - 46th place)

I love the details in Axis Pillar... the way it builds up the orchestration is awesome. Also, I love certain aspects of the percussion, such as at 0:30 and the percussion choices near the end. and It's one of those pieces, like Vast Ice Mountain Peak, where it's cool to "zone out" a bit, not focusing on anything but being aware of all the parts. Also, it might have my favorite rendition of that famous theme (forgot what it's called) in the second half, of any Trails track... though Merciless Savior does a good job with that too. Also, great blending of sounds...for example, the use of the guitar for support starting at 1:00 is just fantastic. Axis Pillar is one of those tracks where I don't initially get a lot out of it, but as I keep listening to it... it gets better and better!

The tb is also part of NFUN's long-ago conceived nefarious plan to torment all of us with having to listen to a 10-minute track repeatedly! ARRGHH will this ever end?!

Oh, hey, it's Dialga's Fight again! Great stuff! I love how it kind of does two different keys at the start, and the main PMD motif gets thrown around in ways that really appeals to me. And it's really epic when it goes into the fifths later on, too. Where does this rank...? Oh, wow, it's only in my top fifteen in the game, huh? I had forgotten about some of the tracks ranked higher! I'm not planning on VIMP being my last Explorers rep to get into a contest. In future years I may very well nominate Vast Ice Mountain, or Ending, or Upper Steam Cave, among others.

Whoa, I have firmly established Liber Ark as the superior SC final dungeon theme, but Axis Pillar is making it a closer call than ever before! Love the iconic motif at 1:32 of course, but my favourite part has to be 1:02 with the, uh, telephone dial tones (surprise guest artist Wavetapper cube?!?)

Raging Loop is one of those games that have been on my radar for quite a while now, seems to be right up my alley in terms of stuff I like. This song is pretty cool too, always a fan of "dark" songs sung in Japanese lol. Good stuff.

Axis Pillar, along with its sister song Liber Ark, is one of my favorite Trails area themes. Given how both of those songs manage to capture the same vibe so well, I'm actually surprised to see that they were composed by two different people! Axis Pillar probably has the most clever usage of the series' main motif.

Good match! (not that close though, I love Axis Pillar)

---

One of the PMD "classics" here, Dialga's Fight to the Finish is fun to listen to every time it gets in. Good song, even if held back (slightly) by the DS soundfont.

Lily is friggin' awesome, never heard of this game before, but it sounds kinda like rhythm game music (but the really good rhythm game music!) "Anime waltz" music, mad respect for the singer's vocal range! I'm a sucker for the distortion effects on vocals used at 2:14 too.

Cool song vs Axis Pillar my beloved

You know how I said PMD music is an exception to my "meh on Pokemon" rule? Case in point. Although this was a pretty close match anyhow, Subete no Yuri wa Chiri Hatete does some sick things in its harmony and production

I'm actually not as hot on Flightless now as I was earlier, but after relistening to them I still think it does more and cooler things than Camellia's track. That said, I'll be pleased no matter the outcome.

Towards the Horizon

I was today years old when I noticed the polymeter in Axis Pillar. Final Wishes seems like something I should like more than I do but the electronic elements are kind of meh.

lol I immediately knew the first song had lyrics just by the video presentation. And then I realized that the video description mentions lyrics. I'm not the biggest fan of how the instrumental break throws a lot at you, but I still enjoyed it! Axis Pillar is just sublime though. I find that most Falcom songs vibe well with my ears, but I feel like I may prefer the "softer" songs more? Not that there's anything wrong with the violins or anything...

I don't have super strong feelings about match 2. I just know I prefer Dialga. Lily was a pleasant surprise though. The first second made me think I was going to not have a fun time, but then I was hit by some vaguely reminiscent of touhou sounds.

No change in opinion for match 3.

P.S. thank you Sergio and Toxtricity for the tunes yesterday! My hunger has been sated. <3
