Whether its the consoles or GPUs or even flight sim accessories, theres still a shortage of items. Why? I keep trying to look for articles on it online but they to date back to late 2020s early 2021. Whats still causing it? Is it seriously still the virus?

I believe it was mentioned many a week ago that there was a shortage of computer chips which would then lead to a shortage of the items you have listed.

I mean Covid is basically the main reason behind everything from what I hear, the manufacturing process is being limited in some cases and it's causing less supply of things.

I have heard of many items being higher priced that people don't even think of. It hasn't hit food prices as much but outside of that it has impacted many industries.

I suppose that makes sense. Makes me wonder why theres this rush to put things back to normal if the virus is still clearly affecting the infrastructure of different industries.

Well in some areas the restrictions are harsher but the main thing people don't think of is the manufacturing of one item relies on another.

If I am making say a PS5 I need to contact like 30+ other places to get the parts I need to build it. So if even one of those places has some restrictions or can't fill my full order I can't build as many as I want.

It's not like one factory does all of the creation and building of a PS5.

Because there is a shortage of manufacturing globally

theres a bunch of stuff that the entire world depends on yet as a species we rely on just a small number of third world places to produce the global supply

Because the infrastructure will never stop being affected until things mostly get back to normal?

Most of life is a process more than a singular thing (or if you want to be pretentious, it's more of a verb than a noun). Everything is affected by other things, which in turn are affected by other things, and so on.

When "Step 4" in the process goes to shit, every step after is going to suffer for it. Part of trying to normalize is getting all of the individual steps working again so that the entire chain can start working properly again as well.

Yes, that's going to mean shortages here and there for a while yet (especially for things that aren't even remotely "essential" to most people), but things will level off eventually. But we have to start somewhere.

When a supply chain gets disrupted, downstream effects often aren't immediately felt. And when a supply chain begins to be restored, it takes time for everything else to return to normal. However, shit still isn't normal right now for the supply chain. The idea that everything is back to normal right now is ignorance.

The factory must grow.

Also, other factors disregarded, it takes 3-5 years of planning/building to build production facilities and a fuckton of capital. Pure play semiconductors make contracts years in advance with others. Then, they're run at maximum production/efficiency. They can't just make more just because someone asked them to make more because they're already making as much as they can. Sometimes when a contract drops out, someone else can buy the production time but thats not something planned for or guranteed.

It still seems wierd to me why covid would affect manufacturing of chips. I always thought the majority of these factories are largely automated anyways and companies like Amazon have shown that you can still run an efficient labor intensive business even during covid

There is a few factors going on here
Covid has really slowed down production of manufacturing. But on top of that, lots of companies are actually trying to move their manufacturing facilities out of China, which is causing more issues.

On top of those scalpers, cryptominers, and even people just hoarding cause there is a shortage are making it even harder to find things.

I assume that is partly because of Trump's tariffs he put up a bunch of tariffs to punish companies from importing from China. Biden could have removed them but so far he has kept them in.

The factory could be 100% automated, might help, but wouldn't stop the shortage. The trucks that bring there materials are not. If they have a labor shortage, they may not be getting enough shipments of material, the shipping company may not be able to source enough vehicles for delivery. The factory that turns raw material into components for the chip manufacturers may have labor shortages and bag logs, they may also be having delivery logistic issues with there raw material. The mine where these raw materials are harvested may be having labor issues, they may not be able to replace there mining equipment as it goes down, because they are also back logged.

Very different industries. Chip manufacturers are closer to meat processors, and COVID decimated that industry, where 30% of some facilities got sick. Plus the manufacturers in other nations had to deal with shutdowns at times.
