Marchs Games:
Yoshi's Woolly World (Wii U/3DS)
Omori (PC)
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (PC/XB1/PS4/Switch/PS1)

What is Game of the Month Club?
Game of the Month is a community project open to all B8ers where users share, discover, play and/or discuss a select few games every month. The games featured each month are chosen by YOU the users (and Lady Luck)

The Basics
- Each month will usually feature three games that were chosen via a random drawing from a pool of games that users nominated
- For each game you beat, you get a cool point on our just-for-fun standings as well as a nomination for next month's randomized drawing
- In order to receive the point and nomination, you must beat said game within the calendar month
- If you beat one of the current month's games in the previous month, you can apply for a "recently beaten waiver," but you will only receive a point and no nomination should you do so
- Drawing for next month's games is usually around a week before the end of the month
- If you periodically keep us posted on your progress and/or talk about different aspects of the games, then everyone will think you are super awesome!

Nomination Rules
- You get one nomination automatically each month
- You receive additional nominations each month for every selected game that you beat
- Each game you nominate has to be unique from all other nominations and cannot include a game that has already been selected for GotM
- Each game must be a standalone game that can be acquired and played on its own (aka cannot be DLC/expansion that requires the base game)
- Nominations only carry over if you beat a selected game after the drawing for next month's games but before the end of the month
- As a special rule for only 2021, you have 11 supports you can use throughout the year. Your only limitations are that you can't support your own nomination, and you can only use one support per game per month

Man I just beat Omori last month

I might play through the 'don't answer the door' route but I don't know if that's going to be any time soon, the last hour or two of my first playthrough fucked me up

I also beat Omori last month, and was also fucked up by the last hour or two, but I'll be replaying it through that way anyway. Interested to see how it turns out.

Is anyone waiting for the Switch/Xbox port of Disco Elysium to play it? I was planning on nominating it because of Final Cut, but I didn't know those versions would be delayed until just now.

I should be able to beat Spyro since I'm almost done with the first game.

Started Yoshi's Woolly World and have completed World 1. This game is even cuter than I expected. The music especially just warms my heart. It feels good on the Wii U and is reminding me just how much I like the Wii U Pro Controller. I'm gonna have to learn to not shoot when I mean to lick and vice versa though.

This month is a skip for me.
  • No interest in Omori.
  • Played Spyro 2 last year (or maybe the year before...) when playing thru the Trilogy (fun game though!)
  • Also already played Wooly World, though it was 5 years ago (!). I remember this being a pretty damn great Yoshi game though, so have fun!

I've now beaten World 2 in Yoshi.

One small complaint I have is that sometimes there is a LOT to do between checkpoints, and since you don't maintain collectibles between checkpoints, it can be a little frustrating to have to do so much over again because you messed up.

Game is still really good, and I've never been huge on Yoshi games. This is making me want to play more.

I almost changed this nom at the last second. I'm glad I stuck with it.

KCF has beaten Yoshi's Woolly World

This was a great excuse for me to go back to my old file on the 3DS version, replay the levels while grabbing everything that I didn't do the first time, and then do all the extra stuff.

I actually did the Boss Tent first, and I was wondering why bosses were far more challenging than I remembered, only to realize when I went through the regular levels that everything was on 2X speed in the tent. The last thing I did was the auto-runner Poochy Tent, and man did those later levels give me fits. It took me probably 15-20 tries to finally clear 1500 gems in Fort Bombs Away.

Anyway, this was my fourth-ish run through the game (twice each for Wii U and 3DS versions). Most Yoshi games are mediocre and not worth playing, but this is one of the few that is. It helps that levels aren't designed so that Yoshi's unorthodox and obnoxious jump isn't so detrimental.

Beat Spyro 2

Played the Reignited version on PS4. I played the game on PS1 a long time ago and wasn't sure if I beat it. Playing through this again I definitely remembered just about every level so I guess I did. Definitely a big upgrade going from Spyro 1; the orbs helped give some variety to the gameplay. Just beat the game with about the minimum amount of orbs needed to fight Ripto.

KCF has beaten Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage

When I first played through the trilogy ages ago, I think my preferred order was 3 > 2 > 1

When I replayed the series a few years back, it was 3 > 1 > 2

2/3 of the way through the remakes, it is 1 > 2

It's still a very good game, but the first game was solely designed around platforming, which is more up my alley. Instead of more robust/challenging level design/platforming segments, the second focused more on providing a litany of mini-games/tasks to complete in each level. Collectively, it is a mixed bag, which is the main reason why I still prefer the first.

Spyro 2 is fun, thank you for the recommendation :D

heh that's right, the composer for this game wrote the amanda show theme song

I love the way all the cutscenes are animated with the in-game models. It's crazy how good this looks and sounds compared to the N64. It's making me wish I had a PS1 growing up. It's interesting how the soundtrack has a fadeout, rather than looping infinitely like most games.

I hate the camera, how it's always pulling towards where it wants you to go, rather than where you're trying to go. When you try to scooch a little bit sometimes you'll fall off a ledge and get sad. I find it difficult to orient myself in these levels.

I got this really hard orb where you're supposed to dash through this speed boost powerup and hit these 6 pillars on a circular track without crashing or missing any. It's effectively a driving game. You have to make itty bitty little inputs to the left stick and any error gets magnified by a million, like balancing a broom on the palm of your hand. It took like a million tries. I kind of cheesed it; I got 5 in one (which is still really hard) and then it didn't reset them for some reason after I missed one, so I got the 6th one real fast before the game could change its mind. I'll take it lol

It's crazy how many characters are voiced by SpongeBob's voice actor. there's nickelodeon all over here lmao

Very early in the game, a character describes the two camera options and asks if you want to change from the default. I think the conversation is optional though, which would make sense since it seems like you were unaware that there were camera settings.

Thanks! Unfortunately I have already experimented with the camera and I think this is as good as it's gonna get lol. It's not that big of a deal.

btw just to clarify this: "I hate the camera, how it's always pulling towards where it wants you to go, rather than where you're trying to go. When you try to scooch a little bit sometimes you'll fall off a ledge and get sad. I find it difficult to orient myself in these levels."

this was 3 separate complaints. The camera, the controls, the level design. I was not elaborating on my complaints on the camera, since those issues are their own things.

I'm a little further into the game and these are my thoughts exactly. There are lots of minigames. Your enjoyment of the game is probably going to be strongly correlated with what % of the minigames you think are fun, because they're 1 of 2 primary things you'll be doing in the game.

The other thing is getting through the level to get talismans, which is mostly fun because of the animations and cutscenes. Like in the ice world when the snow people build a ladder for you to climb. I love that stuff! If you replaced all the characters and environments with stick figures and boxes the game wouldn't be fun. But those things are fun, so getting the talismans is fun, even if getting the talismans isn't fun.
