So how much snow is texas getting anyway? I'm seeing something like 4 inches being reported, but is it more than that?

EDIT: And on a fun note- I had to climb out a window and reverse dig my house out last week when we got that nor'easter

A week of freezing temps doesn't result in properly frozen ground.
And if the ground isn't "properly frozen" it's more susceptible to melting due to friction and refreezing, which is what makes ice slick.

Which is what makes it not stick around for long.....

Look ahead at the weather report. 20 degrees with some sunlight is enough to cause significant melting on the roads. Once it hits 40 degrees your roads will basically be clear and then the other snow will be gone super fast.

People hoarded food for something that causes bad road conditions for a few days to a week. Keep in mind, you can definitely still go out there and get food. It's just really inconvenient to have a much slower commute. Yet people still hoarded a bunch of stuff like a nuclear meltdown was coming.

Hundreds of thousands of people went to the store at the same time to buy food for a few days because they knew it would be difficult or dangerous to shop this week.

It wasn't hoarding. It's the same thing that happens everywhere just before a major storm of any type. Couple dudes in this topic really need to chill out.

Yeah idk why but he's weirdly fixated on the narrative of dumb Texans. And ignores all the advantages northern states have for coping with freezing conditions. Thinks it's as simple as "just drive slowly lol"

we all lost power at 1:30 and they still haven't restored it and it's 40 degrees inside my apartment and they might not be able to bring it back for literal days.

There isnt even enough electricity in Texas to effectively do rolling blackouts so instead we are just cut indefinitely while it's 8 degrees outside rn.

Food trucks haven't been able to deliver to grocery stores reliably for days and it's gonna be worse now.

It's 6 inches of snow here, but the real problem is the 8 degree temperature which is gonna stay below freezing for some more days.

Hopefully things don't get worse!

I'm in Columbus (Ohio that is) and this is expected to be the biggest snow storm for us since the mid-late 2000s according to my wife (I only moved here in 2010, she has lived her all her life) and we think it will turn into a level 3 snow emergency today and tomorrow (all roads closed to non emergency personnel) and it is a level 1 right now. We got an inch overnight but the really heavy stuff happens this afternoon into sometime tomorrow.

Columbus gets it easier compared to the north and the south parts of the state. We don't get lake effect snow the north has and our roads are better than the south and no inclines and declines of the mountains.

That said, everywhere is different. I was from California and earthquakes were minor and rare where I lived even. The worst one we got was the Northridge earthquake in 1994. The buildings are also built for earthquakes. We probably will get a foot of snow it seems. Winters prior to the 20-21 winter were extremely mild from 15-16 to 19-20 to a point of me getting away with shorts and my wife getting away with flip flops on Christmas for years.

Something tells me theres going to be a run on generators once this is over. All those people that ran to the store to buy food are going to have to toss a lot of perishables.

Im a east coaster and after a couple of power outages, I did say screw it an invested in setting up the power in my house so it can run off a generator. We have oil heating which still requires power to start the furnace.

That's what happened here. My grandparents lost power in their house during a snowstorm for a full 8 days back in 2013, they had to stay at my uncle's house until the power came back on (below freezing the entire stretch). They got a super nice generator setup a couple weeks later.

it was back in 2007 (really nasty storm).
i did get some food assistance back then but it was a month later to recoup what i spent.

Not surprised, there's probably zero insulation on them running up from the ground to your house. I mean, legitimately why would there be lol, there isn't a single month of the year in places like Galveston where the average minimum low temperature is below zero.

Lol Texas

I'm in MN and the temperature hasn't been above 0 degrees in over a week. Southern states act so dramatic about the slightest hint of winter.

I live in northern Canada. It's been as low as -50C recently. The shit you guys get in MN is nothing compared to what we get.

But do you know what we both have in common? We live in places where cars are regularly equipped with snow tires. We live in places that have the infrastructure capable of getting enough ploughs on the road quick and efficiently enough to make the roads manageable. We live in places where our houses are properly insulated and don't have to worry about your pipes freezing.

You know what most of the south has? None of that...

The temperature difference between the outside and what you want inside is a hell of a lot more when it's cold like this versus when it's hot. Consider right now in Dallas it's like 13 F. It's a hell of a lot more difficult to get your home heated into the mid-60s-low-70s (idk where you people want it) from where the temperature is right now than it is to cool it down in the summer.

Honestly I have no idea what the insulation standards are in Texas (and I'm sure it's different from say, Amarillo to Dallas to Galveston) but considering I can find articles referencing to "make sure your exterior walls are insulated" then it might not be the greatest everywhere!
