124./90. Halo 3 - Warthog Run
Nominator: Rob
8.6 (8.6/0)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_pAa9252Uo
didnt even know this was nommed when I was listening to it all week. it's a "basic" western orchestral song, one that actually manages to keep itself moving and interesting. Granted, it's basically just the Halo theme, which we all know is great. Still, the way it's kind of stretched and modified for this in-game version fits very well. Like PSO2, it utilizes how the main melody is heroic rather than emotional very well, adapting it to this dramatic escape while relying on its context as a main theme, rather than how it sounds, for the emotional impact. It's unfettered

8.6 (8.6/0)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdiqG3RGBec
One of my favorite FTL songs. The whole soundtrack is ethereal and moody, combining the majesty of space with a low-bit soundtrack so refined I didn't even realize it could be called a chiptune for years

121./83. Castlevania: Curse of Darkness - Abandoned Castle
Nominator: @scarletspeed7
8.6 (8.6/0)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W37UV0LA-yI
Could be my favorite CV song (granted, I don't have much experience). Nails everything it tries to do, with good guitars and riffs, the spooky baroque Castlevania feel, and certainly would feel awesome to play along too. Some Metroid syths too, which is nice

I am apparently the only person in the VGM world that knows Call of Duty Zombies songs, and, weirdly enough, they've *grown* on me over time. God damn were the WaW and Black Ops songs good. I'd put Paredolia and probably 115 above this, though 3rd place ain't bad. As a whole, I don't *love* the structure of the song. However, some of the effects are really good, and most importantly, it has this weird kind of melancholy going throughout it, particularly the last two sung lines, which are so good. I generally detest growling in songs. Here, I guess it being used in moderation, being tempered by the aforementioned constructions and the arguable justification of having them be present in a *zombie* song, makes it something I can ignore pretty easily. At 3;10, when the panning is entirely on one ear, something it sounds like I'm hearing negative noise (a nonsensical concept, I know) rather than silence in my left ear. A vacuum produced somehow.

One of the Good Ace Combat songs. That is to say, one of the three I know. Do I like this more than Zero? Has Zero appeared yet? I don't know! I think I'd rank this and that about the same as Megalith... on second thought, definitely Zero > WD > Megalith, though they're all very cool. I love what this does with its violins

Groovy. Schmoody. Hmm. Schmoovy? That sounds like it works, but doesn't feel like it describes what I want it too. Groody is just completely wrong. Scientists need to dedicate their efforts towards portmanteauing these words to synthesize new visceral descriptions. While they're at it, make a real word that has five unique consecutive vowels. I like this well enough I recognized I *should* know it in a siiva list, and was very frustrated that I missed the insane because i couldn't quite place it. This is also oddly reminiscent of the SMT Wandering song

this song is probably better than the entire game. Despite perhaps grazing some cliches (ok, more than grazing), it manages to get me invested and moving along to the emotions. Something about it I can't quite pinpoint makes it stand above the rest of the songs like this to me. I keep trying to analyze different aspects and concluding that, individually, they're not all that special, so I suppose I just think it does everything right, and comes together strongly

Apparently a ripoff of a better song, but I don't know that song, so I can't hold it against this! Has similar energy to Otherworld, but I like that song, so I can't hold it against this! It's pretty simple, but I realize as I do this tier that that doesn't bother me if I find the song compelling, so I can't hold it against this! In other words, this is a song that many other people would probably dislike, but these are my ratings, so I can't hold it against this! I just reread Mistborn and the lyrics are somehow reminiscent of that, so there's a bonus there

It was kind of a bold choice for Square to demand that soundtrack videos include gameplay footage to not get killed, as seeing this gameplay is making me less likely to want to play the game.

Ah, Umineko. For whatever reason I just didn't care about it in older VGMCs and assumed I hated the series in general when I first heard it. How times change

This one goes for a more uplifting vibe. That's pretty neat! I think that works very well in the context of all of the others, that are generally more sinister. And then it too becomes kind of spooky and dramatic, but still is hopeful. ded seems to be the most emotionally evocative one of the octalogy for me

105./61. Call of Duty: World at War - Final Push
Nominator: Rob
8.7 (8.7/0)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nyAThrjdkw
Nostalgic as hell, and actually a pretty great song. World at War honestly has a soundtrack worth listening to, and is probably the only CoD game with notable music outside of like Zombies or other weird cases. Yes, I'm the Call of Duty guy as a meme. This game isn't one. I think a large part of that is that this game is both grounded and takes itself seriously. Instead of being focused on drama and betrayals, futuristic technology or double-agent MK Ultra nonsense, it seemed, as I remember, to respect the horrors of war and the reasons why some think it's necessary and volunteer to fight. The soundtrack reflects that. On one hand, you have this wonderfully triumphant theme that's tinged with the pain required to get here, and on the other, Brav Soldat, which is one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard. This song doesn't come across as vapid or jingoistic, just celebrating the end of a task that needed to get done

Somebody in the comments for Mind's Eye said that the rest of the soundtrack was bad. They were wrong; so much personality oozes from every song. The first half of this is definitely superior though. Not to say I dislike the back half. It's even more concentrated 90's cheese, somehow. It's a real shame we don't get this type of jazz in vgm much anymore, at least not that I've seen. I'm sure there's tons of people nostalgic for this era (hell, I am, and I didn't even live in it!)

Funny cool weird steel drums or whatever those are. They definitely elevate the song above what I expected it'd be. This whole take on reggae is very strange in a good way. Like, that instrument at 1:20 both sounds really out of place and weirdly incorporated and entirely natural. I like this

Pretty portentious that the next TCal song to come out happened to be *this*, his most awaited song for years. And... it's not his best. It's pretty different, intentionally, from the rest of the soundtrack. Went hard for the kind of chanting which tends not to be that interesting. Of course, it's still DM DOKURO, so it's still good. If he released this a little earlier and sanctuary was the pick instead, whoooooo... That'd be a frightening contender

Here's the thing with Flotage. I think it's pretty neat, alright? It's a good song. It's definitely not my favorite Black Label song. I really like the instruments the game uses, and I think those instruments are best when they're *ahem* mercilessness. This is a soundtrack that I want going absolutely as hard as possible, no holds barred. When I listen to these instruments, I want to be crushed between Basiscape's thighs until my head explodes, killing me instantly. In most other soundtracks, a song like this is probably the better bet for me. Not this time. Shoutouts deo saying the composer was Namiki.

Buh-bye for now.

It took me much longer than it should've for me to realize that they were speaking English. Man, Yakuza music is so consistently good. Only SEGA could make a song like this and have me like it a lot. You tried 3 times to get the composer for this Rufus, and yet you still failed... again. On a different Yakuza game. Why do you hate Chihiro Aoki so much?

that's the end of rufus. surprised he's not in the bottom quartile of nominators given how many zzz ni no kuni songs he gave me, which he should've known I'd dislike given how often I've fought about Shimomura with him

And then the song progresses like I expected, but contextualized with that, it's different, changed just from my different perspective. That's a great effect. This whole song is really cool

The first forty seconds or so are, I don't know if it's strictly dissonant but the vocals and instruments certainly *clash*. Too raw. Afterwards it's still sometimes mixed weirdly or there's too much going on, with the caveat that it sounds good... which, now that I think about it, is a pretty consistent feature in Armored Core 5 songs. The vocals in the last third are great and carry some emotion; if only they'd cut through the music more, they'd have a larger impact

Interesting note: Around like a month ago, I came across a playlist that had all of the SSX 3 songs ripped in their ingame versions. In the game they're broken down into segments that play dynamically depending on where you are on the track and what you're doing. Listening to them out of context you're just hearing all the parts sequentially, but it gives a much different listening experience, and allows an even greater appreciation for the way that they made the game's soundtrack.

Pretty good ranking for what was essentially a troll nom.

Honestly surprised that AAC thing made it this far. That soundtrack is kind of an outlier for a composer (Jeff Van Dyck) whose main body of work is Total War and things that sound like Total War. Would love to see him try this sort of thing again.

Oh, it's not that anyone here wouldn't know what dynamic music is. It's just customary to talk about how good the structure of SSX 3 is whenever possible since there are still people on the internet who try to claim that Tricky is the best game because they remember the theme song and haven't played any other game.

yeah minor is pretty good but i'm not sure it needs a dedicated protector. locrian could use a hand though. kinda weird for hamauzu to make a game about himself

I think what sums up the song best is a comment I made when talking with tked. 'This is the most overwhelmingly Hamauzu thing I have ever heard'

Nominator: @dowolf

My left ear is having the time of its life. The beginning was really cool (I'm sure mycro/haste/kaon is ready to tell me that it's in mixolydian or based around fifths rather than octaves or something), and then the song kind of stopped for a bit. Breaking tension is good, but you can do that while still having the song be interesting. It does allow for the drums to come in very prominently. Good measured drum solos are something I'm discovering I like a lot. Eh, as a whole I suppose I can forgive those sections. They're not offensively boring, and the song as a whole is still strong

81./114. Shatter - Argon Refinery
Nominator: @azuarc

I feel like I'm about to fight the Necrodancer at the start. Less so later on, even though it retains the energy from before. It builds something I enjoy quite a bit.I don't know if I can call this song "interesting", but it's certainly very nice to listen to... honestly, it actually *is* interesting; it just doesn't present itself as such, if that makes sense. Like you have to actually focus to notice a lot of what's it's doing, even though you're still affected by those consciously-ignored parts. Really good instrumentation too. If the rest of the soundtrack is this strong I see how it won BOST

RIP azuarc. There goes our first B8 VGM community nominator. Given the trajectory of my tastes over the years, I'm sure you saw this coming, though I'm sure if given the chance to nominate again you'd be able to get a much higher average choosing different songs that you like

Out of the songs I heard first while doing this project, this is probably in the top percentiles of what I've gone out of my way to seek out on YouTube... and I have no idea why. It's pretty good, but not amazing, and it's not even super unique. It just stuck with me, for whatever reason. It gets points for that

I'll let you in one a little something.
The VGM ranking game, it's not like boxing.
The ranker who is slow isn't the loser.
The guy who can't tough it out to the end, he's the one who loses.
Eh? Don't ya think?

In the ranking game there are no KO's.
I'll tell you what, Board 8.
To me, a year or two don't mean shit.
Having Mycro or cako beat me in their rankings? Couldn't give a fuck...
As long as I'm alive, I'll keep getting back up for more.

Very different aesthetic than I was expecting. Very pretty, and gets enough of its emotions across to be successful. It's also interesting aside from that, which tends not to be the case for credit themes. The instrumentation is honestly top-notch. Gonna be one of my go-to examples of how to do credit themes right

One thing interesting about the nominator stats right now: it seems surprisingly useful as a compatibility measure. You'd expect these kinds of stats to be a little misleading until the very end, as the songs that have the highest score haven't gone out yet, so the nominators with surviving songs should be underrated with the information we have. Even with that bias, most of the nominators with averages in the bottom half of scores have lost all of their songs, and just about every nominator in the first quartile still survives, most with multiple songs left. You can really see the cohort effects easily

Im glad this song got a good score. I actually have a (not very interesting) story behind this pick: So, Se7en and I had done a joint Classic Mega Man Song Ranking topic, 200 songs from 1 through 10. When we were done, I really wanted to go back and do another 200 focused on classic series spin-offs and remakes: & Bass, Battle & Chase, Soccer, Rockboard, the Game Boy series, the Complete Works, etc. He wasnt interested in the idea and I didnt see a point to continuing the series as a solo effort, so I just let the idea die.

But I was always kinda sad that the Complete Works songs in particular wouldnt exactly fit in anywhere. The classic soundtracks are more iconic and popular & only games 4 through 6 got full remade soundtracks... and well those were never the most popular games in the series to start with. If someone was going to nominate Classic Mega Man songs why would they go with a fairly obscure Playstation version of an NES chiptune in the first place?? And then you decided to try a ranking topic with an impossibly large number of songs included... I figured this would be the only nomination topic in history where I could justify burning a nomination on something so frivolous, so I just grabbed what seemed to be an original song created specifically for that version of the game (as far as Im aware) and threw it in at the last minute.

Glad to see it get some recognition after all this time.

"Opaque Air" is the perfect name for this. Any actual context doesn't matter. I can tell that this is the Platonic ideal of jazz fusion names, and I don't even really listen to that genre! This song is making a strong case for me to start...

Used to be my absolute favorite song (for like, two weeks, although after getting really into Calamity I appreciated how close this was to Servants of the Scourge alphabetically). Now it's just almost my favorite (as of years ago oops). Still like it quite a bit, even if a lot of what it does I've found better examples of. The first half is good, not too special, repetitive as Revo does. The second begins with a weird breakdown which isn't that weird to me anymore but still grabs my attention, and the transition through all of the special attack songs is even better now that I actually know them. Lefty insists that this song is incoherent and... it really isn't. Those segments all fit together, make a cohesive whole, and are connected through the structure of the song. It's a very strange criticism he adamantly insists upon and I just don't get it

73./33. Chrono Cross - Scars of Time
Nominator: VGMC Honorees

For so long I vaguely knew what this song sounded like but could never conjure it up in detail if encouraged. Now that I bothered to listen through it, I gotta say that I'm underwhelmed. I mean, that isn't to say that it isn't good, just not really winner material. Doesn't help that Corridors of Time <COMMENT REDACTED>

Wow I really shit on this song when I first ranked it. It's pretty good, though still not champion-worthy, lacking that special something. Still, pretty fantastic I will never hear the beginning of this song and not think Mysterious Old Schoolhouse SAV

Battle for Bikini Bottom synths. These are some phat rhymes. This has an odd mix of super uplifting and super devastating. The structure of the song really gets the Charge of the Light Brigade mood across, of a futile war that still must be fought without abandon. It's not really something you hear in VGM that often, at least not this strongly. Silver Will does it too
