The Medium is a Polish psychological horror game by the company behind Observer and Layers of Fear. I don't know much beyond that as it's not a genre that I delve in often.

It really is amazing, the soundtrack as a whole feels like an entire love letter to Akira's own previous work with Silent Hill. The Love That Was Lost with that alt. rock guitar, you got the trip-hop vibes of Echoes, tracks like Childeater and Mirrors nailing that ethereal atmosphere with discordant sounds and pure guttural noise percussion, invoking the darkest tracks of SH like Prayer. It even has Mary Elizabeth McGlynn vocals, this is like I all could ask for in a horror VG soundtrack!

I don't want to underscore the work of Arkadiusz Reikowski here either, he's done amazing work in all previous Bloober games too with a lot of Silent Hill-type OSTs but with a very modern electronic influence and tons of Eastern-originating sounds whereas I think Yamaoka mostly draws from western genres. They work extremely well together and I hope they do more in the future.

Everything about it is classic survival horror, from music all the way to fixed camera angles.

And beautiful in HDR to boot.

Well it being a Series exclusive makes the playerbase assumedly very small so it kinda makes sense there's less buzz around it.

It is available for PC though too, I just think Bloober is still a pretty obscure indie team all-around despite a very consistent and quality output.

About four and a half hours in and I wasn't digging the narrative at the start, but it's getting better and better as it goes on. Just about to head into the forest. Only complaint so far is that the skin demon is annoying more than anything else, especially when he starts being invisible too.

Yeah there are a ton of great indie/AA games that fly under the radar on a daily basis with little to no media coverage or buzz in public forums. Bloober is juuust big enough to get some attention, but most of the awareness of this game is probably because it's on Game Pass at this point.

I guess expectations for it and it's coverage feel like they should be higher because, excluding PC, this is...the FIRST even remotely notable Series X exclusive?

Just beat it! Very cool experience that makes me want to go back and check out some of Bloober's older games. From what I gather Observer is like an entire game based around the concept of the Thomas sections, which sounds fantastic to me.

Yeah Observer is incredible with the depths of psychological horror it goes to, & just the attention to detail alone in your surroundings is insane. You can spend hours alone just admiring the apartment hallways.

It's probably the game that best encapsulates what they're about but all of their games are a treat.

From what I hear the story is legitimately very divisive, so I think that's part of it too. I've seen both people praising it for being a relatively high-budget and high-profile horror game and people slamming it for being a worse knockoff of other games.

Finished it yesterday. It had some cool ideas and the design of the spirit world was great, but all of the stealth sections were bad and the ending was stupid.
