Then you dont really understand politics. It will always be party > policy.

Didn't mean this to be insulting by the way. Its just how this country will always operate.

It's a procedural vote regarding debate.

Specifically, I believe it was a vote to skip an investigative process and go straight to debate

It's for the articles of impeachment.

The actual vote to convict won't start until January 19.

And Senate republicans are absolutely not going to do it because like their house counterparts they also believe the election was stolen, that the terrorists were antifa and nah, just kidding, they don't believe any of that, they're doing it because "Fuck liberals" and "We republicans cannot have an impeached and removed president on our record" but of course when questioned they will say that bullshit or make themselves out to be hostage victims afraid of the MAGAmob doing stuff to their families if they voted for conviction.

But in this case its not putting the party first. Distancing yourself from Trump would be putting the party first.

This is hurting the party.

Of course I guess I shouldn't be surprised these dumbfuck shit for brains Republicans couldn't figure that out.

If they can't vote out a obviously fuckim dangerous president, even to just make a moral fuckin stand. We dont need the Republican party. It needs to dye. Democrats should be our right leaning group if we need two and progressives should be our left leaning group. But of course america is just straight fucked.

question for you guys. whats the point?

i think i know what the point is, it's for the principle. he did something wrong so he should be impeached for it. and he needs the title for being impeached twice. but effectively it seems pointless since he's gone in a week.

Because consequences on the table include:

No Secret Service detail, therefore no further tax payer money going into his properties as they have for the last 5 years.

No pension, so less tax payer money again.

No future bids for office, thereby reducing political capital.

However, even with that in mind, the principle of holding him accountable for this madness and stupidity is worthwhile on its own.

And so he isn't getting over a million a year in tax payer money till he dies and so history says someone actually held the fat orange fuck accountable. And to land a blow to his ego.

There's a lot of reasons for it if you take a second to think about it.

A line needs to be drawn somewhere on how far the President's powers can extend. If the impeachment doesn't happen then it tells future presidents that actions like what happened last Wednesday can go unpunished. Plus a successful impeachment will prevent Trump from ever running for office again which everyone should strongly desire.

From USA Today Article:

Trump will be the beneficiary of a number of taxpayer-financed benefits that could be wiped out if he were impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate.
Gone would be the $200,000 a year stipend.
Gone would be the possibility of a $1 million a year travel budget.
Gone would be taxpayer subsidies to finance his office and staff.
Gone would be the pension for the spouse of the president.

There are probably some other perks too that are not listed (like lifetime Secret Service protection) so basically it would be a little over $1.2 million a year in just cash alone.
You know he is the type to write stuff off as travel expense and will max out the $1 million budget every year.

Fucking disgraceful and I think it really says a lot about where America is right now. I feel for you guys, as even if Trump is impeached (and hopefully jailed) then you still have millions of people and numerous politicians who support terrorists staging a coup to overthrow democracy in your own country.

I legit don't know how you can come back from it without full condemnation of what happened.

This isn't completely accurate. It only applies of the president is removed. If they convict him AFTER he's gone we don't know exactly what will happen. He will most likely keep the security detail though the pension and vacation money can be revoked.

There's related (obviously not perfectly on point) historical precedent in the impeachments and subsequent trials of William Belknap and federal judge West Hughes Humphries.

Congress historically has defined its own jurisdiction here.

There will be no consequences because the Impeachment won't make it past the senate, so what is your point exactly? The Government should just waste time and money on a political stunt which won't actually punish anyone because...?
