I don't see what's so wrong about appreciating a newer version of something with a different look and feel

If you want something objective I mean they make nods to the original which break the fourth wall in a way, that's a thing

Jungle Book > Aladdin > Cinderella > Maleficent > Beauty and the Beast > Lion King
Haven't seen Mulan yet, nor Lady and the Tramp or Dumbo. All imo obviously.

Lion King 2019 is over hated. The animation is beautiful. People hate it because it essentially doesn't change anything and because the animals don't have exaggerated expressive faces like in the original. Both of those are valid reasons for not liking it, so I can certainly understand, but I feel the "not liking it" is unfairly turned into "completely hated it". I'm personally tired of movies constantly being remade, so I'd never really support them in the first place. But at the end of the day, it was still The Lion King, so it was still a good story with beautiful animation. Looking at in a bubble, it's enjoyable. In regards to saying that animals don't have expressive faces, this is both a fair point, and a bit of a cop out to me. These people are often comparing it to the original which most people hold on an untouchable pedestal of nostalgia, so the movie never had a chance to begin with. Then you look at other Disney acclaimed films like WALL-E and Homeward Bound where the main characters have less expressive faces than in the 2019 Lion King.

So eh, I can understand people not liking it, but I think hating it is very silly.

I actually think that's entirely the problem with the remakes. They don't have the magic and energy and expression of the originals. You just can't recreate that with realistic takes. Plus we are also adults watching kids movies now. But, I mean, you can even see from kids they aren't as invested. It's telling that Frozen was bigger than any of these classic remakes.

Celebrity voice acting has fucked up a lot of animated movies. The ones that hit hit huge, but the ones that miss MISS.

The problem began with Genie and then Shrek made it worse. After those it's just assumed your animated movie must be full of celebrities.

I watched mulan once it became free on Disney plus. Having heard all the negativity about it, I was expecting a dumpster fire. By the end, it surpassed my expectations. It's not that bad. Still worse than the cartoon by a mile, but the hate is a bit overdone in my opinion.

Just finished. It wasn't an abomination, but there was no emotional depth at all. I appreciate them trying to evolve the story, but it doesn't work when you can't generate a connection between the audience and Mulan or any of the side characters.

20 minutes into Mulan now, I do not have final thoughts but I will have absolutely none of this The Lion King was better or The Lion King is over hated malarkey. The Lion King was terrible. I went in with heavily tempered expectations after hearing the response and it was still comfortably below those. It is just a shallow reflection of a great film, but every scene is worse. At least Mulan is trying to be its own film.

There are only two good live action Disney remakes: The Jungle Book and Cinderella. I think Mulan is conceptually a lot more interesting than the rest but there are some issues already.

I enjoyed one of these more than Mulan and it wasn't TLK.

Will children who see remade Lion King now at a young age and love it, then later go back and watch the original, think "wow I now hate the remake it is worthless trash"

Or do you think they'll hold their own biases. "It's neat I just can't care about the characters as much because they aren't realistic" is a pretty easy line to imagine

Sure, you can make the same point about Mulan but they're so different it's gotta be a different conversation. I guess I just can't buy into the idea that you get automatic points for trying to be different.

Like. As a baseline starting point, how is "different" default better than "same" when the original is a known smash hit

Different doesn't mean bad, but it certainly shouldn't mean good

Rotten Tomatoes is pretty hard to trust these days. I'm not saying the remake is good or bad as I haven't seen it, just throwing that out there.

If you put the two versions side by side its clear which is better. Additionally, its not like the original hasnt aged well and needs an update for the younger generation. They can just watch the original, and its like its still new.

Also Mulan wasnt great, but its passable. At least its clearly distinct from the original, its not trying to be the same. Thats good. Ironically the original holds it back as all the Wuxia action needs to be totally family friendly, and it feels impactless as a result. But you know, its doing something new, it looks pretty decent, some alright performances. The witch was... an odd story choice. But Id take it over TLK any day!

That's not quite what I meant. I don't really want to go into the entire ordeal because it would be a lot of research and typing, but what I was referring to is the fact that Rotten Tomatoes has on occasion "babysat" certain movies to make sure their score stays positive amongst the audience.

I'm not specifically stating that is what happened here, just that it's possible because they've done it before so I don't really trust them anymore.
