I max out my 457b, 403b, HSA, and IRA each year and put the rest in a taxable account with vanguard. Its at 70-30 American:international index funds. I wish my employer would let me do post-tax 403b contributions after hitting the 19k but no for our policy. Debating on going up to like 10% bonds.

Im investing about 5 years living expenses each year. Hope to retire in 30s but still do some small work thats more fulfilling, math tutor, guitar tutor, dog watcher, seasonal ski patrol.

I don't have an employee sponsored benefits plan, so I contribute max to my Roth IRA and then put aside twice that to a taxable vanguard account.

The company I work for is employee owned. I'm fully vested in our ESOP. It's grown like crazy in the last few years. I've only been there for 5 years and it's over $30,000. It's pretty much doubled every year.

Retirement is a long, steady road down decay to death. The cultures with the longest life expectancy tend to work the longest. There's an island in Japan where people live to 115 on average and they don't retire until maybe the last 2 or 3 years of their life. Meanwhile in the US, people often retire around 65, are invalids by their 80s, and dead by 90 if not sooner.

Sooner, I should think. While it depends on circumstances, if they never worked due to a mental or physical disability, odds are their lifespan is already shorter. And if they live in low-income housing, they're at a higher risk of violent crime.

I'll probably die before retirement age. Which works, I guess. If I do, I won't have to worry about saving for it, I guess...

What if they come from money, but also always took care of themselves. like eating proper and exercising and stuff?

Still probably going to be shorter than somebody who works to the end.

A lot of it depends on how well you take care of yourself. Most of the problems you can have at 75 you can have at 55 (or even 45) and you can go past 75 without having some of them.

Otherwise being alive is generally better than being dead.

I wonder how much of that is because of mental stimulation. Work is one of the most socially and mentally stimulating things people have going for them. I believe I read a study the most optimal amount of work for mental health is 8 hours a week, and then the benefits drop off.
