Uh. That would mean that fireworks are worse, not better. You've outright solved your own problem; laws are already in place to keep lasers from being used in area with aircraft, meaning that the thing you're taking issue with wouldn't even happen.

Or did you think people were suggesting that average joes all make their own laser shows wherever the fuck they want? Because that is not what is being suggested. We're talking about coordinated, organized shows. The hint is in the phrase "laser SHOW."

There isn't... really enough people who run laser shows to do that for every medium sized city as well. You're going to run into people who really shouldn't be operating lasers fast.

Idk. Last night, fireworks were all over the place even though the show was cancelled. I think people were just shooting off their own. Seem apparently fine. But lasers would probably be different...

Anyway, laser sounds boring. At least compared to fireworks...

I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to coordinate a temporary no-fly zone to establish a safe radius for the hour or so that would be needed to have a reasonable buffer on either end of the show. It might be a bit tricky to find safe flight paths on the night of the 4th, since pretty much every community will be putting on a show, but I would think something could still be worked out (even if that's just protective goggles for pilots between ~8 and 12).

This is probably the more significant issue. In theory, you'd have a whole bunch of fireworks people out of work who could move into lasers instead, but the skill sets aren't particularly transferable, so it's not quite that simple. It'd have to be a very gradual transition to allow the supply of manpower to keep up with demand.

No, because fireworks only go a maximum of 300 feet into the sky. And that is an extreme case, most never get above half that.

Commercial planes typically fly 100X higher then that, and most private planes (Prop planes, not jets. Those fly higher then commercial planes) are flying at least 5X that high.

Laser light shows, conversely, have been proven to blind pilots and cause planes to crash.

Those protective glasses only work for a certain bandwidth of light, with the general rule of thumb that you have highpass glasses that let light above green in, or lowpass glasses that light below green in. There's a big of an issue during light shows because they tend to use multiple different frequencies of light, or just a single frequency. Eeeh, I suppose if they make it all blue/red it would be fine, it's just that people get bored of those.

No-fly zones would work, as long as the lasers don't aim too far down, because high powered lasers go beyond the horizon, so if you aim it badly, you can get a reflection at a bad angle or just have a small oopsie, you can cause major problems.
