Real ones suck, though... At least, in my experience (and most people I know in the military). Those can be even harder to breath it. That being said, Ive never had to wear them in the cold. But theyre horrible In the heat. When we did all the MOPP stuff, people sometimes pass out. And people would be sneaking breathes it. You wouldnt be able to do it real world, but people did it for training. So, those might be even worse, tbh...

Sigh, yeah my friend was suggesting I get one, but I'm a bit worried that as you said, it will actually be worse. I even have a problem with VR headsets (I can at least use the PS4 ones, but the occulus ones make me sweat etc really fast).

I am not having luck finding any I can get nearby, and I really don't wanna order one online. It does sound like a waste of money for me cause I just don't think I can wear them for long. If I can't handle a mask, how am I gonna handle something that covers most of my face.

They do have some masks that are farther away from your face at least, but I may try to just literally jury rig something myself at home. Create a cloth based mask that is held away from my mouth by cardboard or something. It should still restrict what gets through, but hopefully will reduce my breathing problems.

Thing is, I can't even sleep with my face towards a wall (like 2 feet away from my face), and I'm not gonna be able to make something more than a few inches away. I'll prob just have to suffer and go out as little as possible.

Honestly it wasn't a huge deal as I have not been going out since Feb 1st or so almost at all (just to shop), but it's been so long now, and the numbers are exploding in the US so it looks like it's gonna be awhile longer. I gotta start getting out at least a couple times a week or something or I'll literally go insane (er).

Everyone says just go walking around, and I may do that a bit at night, but, I kinda need to be able to interact with other sentient beings a bit, and do things etc. I'm REALLY good at entertaining myself etc, but it's getting a bit rediculous at this point.

SARS-CoV-2 virus particles range between 50-200 nanometres in diameter (5e-8 to 2e-7). Farts contain a number of different odorant molecules, including some as small as hydrogen sulfide, which is approximately 200 picometres in diameter (2e-10). That means the virus itself is 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than the smallest molecules that need to get through for a fart to be smelled. More significantly, this is not a virus that can survive in a dry environment, so the only way you're going to see transmission is via water droplets. Those droplets tend to fall in the 5-10 micrometre range (5e-6 to 1e-5), 4-5 orders of magnitude larger than the odorants in your farts.

The fact that you can smell a fart through multiple layers of clothing does not mean that a similar layer of cloth does nothing to prevent the transmission of droplets that are 10,000-100,000 times larger than those odorants. Of course it's not going to be perfect, especially without an airtight seal around the edges (to say nothing of not protecting the eyes), but to suggest that it does nothing is profoundly ignorant of basic biology and math (every number cited here can be found with less than a minute of googling/wikipedia).

To be clear:

* 0.0000000002 m - Smallest fart odorants
* 0.00000005 m - Smallest SARS-CoV-2 particles
* 0.000005 m - Smallest droplets (required for Covid transmission, are the actual target of masks)
Those are very significantly different numbers.

You don't have to enjoy wearing it. Nobody ever really enjoys wearing PPE, regardless of the situation. You should, however, accept that people who very obviously know more about the matter than you are probably right even if your superficial assessment of the matter leads you to doubt. You should also recognize your ignorance, and if your lack of understanding causes you to have questions about the advice of experts, ask those questions instead of spreading misinformation by spouting off your ignorant drivel as though it has any merit. There are plenty of people out there who will be happy to explain it to you without calling you an idiot, but only if you solicit that advice by asking properly instead of by acting like an idiot to attract their attention.

I really wish there was more on this tbh, as it's weird nobody talks about the difference between breathing through your nose and your mouth and how easy it is to spread things.

Logically if you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, you should be just protecting others just as good as if your nose was covered as well.

There is of course more of a chance for YOU to get the virus, obviously, but from what I understand that is reduced only a tiny bit by wearing a mask, it's mainly the fact that if everyone wears a mask it prevents them from spreading it, which makes it much safer for everyone else.

So if everyone wore a mask that covered their mouth, but not their nose, wouldn't it be just about the same amount of protection?

Obviously if it's not a massive problem for you, just wear the mask normally, but I can't be the only person who has a serious problem wearing a mask for more than 10 minutes or so.

I mean, if your gonna sneeze or something obviously cover your nose at that point, but otherwise you really shouldn't be expelling stuff when you breathe out from it, your not doing so when talking (Because it's through the mask), so it SHOULD be fairly safe.

But nobody talks about it at all.

There are a few general articles about it beign good to breathe through the nose as an extra layer of defense like this, but nothing specific about reducing the spread by doing so.

You would think they would set something up to make that possible, but so far you still can't get food/groceries delivered in a decent amount of time. You are basically forced to go out there and forage every so often.

Do you have underlying breathing related issues? It not, your mask should not make it difficult to breathe. Either its a weight issue or its in your head.

I watched a video of a nurse do her oxygen saturation level to compare masks on and off. The levels were perfectly consistent.

I have no clue what causes it, but it's always been a problem. I can't sleep with something in front of my mouth (Even a blanket etc) or a wall near me. Maybe it's claustraphobia? I don't know, but whatever it is, it's real.

Its not claustrophobia. You may want to actually see a doctor. A piece of cloth shouldnt impede your breathing significantly.

We are not even protecting Granny or people who are high risk etc. I still have to go out and get groceries. I avoid going out for any other reason, but even with a mask etc, I could get sick when I go out.

There is contact less delivery for uber etc, why not hire a bunch of people to do contactless delivery for groceries.

Were like internet friends here. So, it makes more sense posting here, tbh... Lots of people post here about stuff. Like losing someone, promotions, and general life stuff... You dont need to, though. You could get the same point across by just talking without feeling the need to insult... And its not like its only limited to you. Other people do it, as well...

I mean a hug box does sound kinda fun lol.

Just got back from picking up my car part (already looked it up and I can do the repairs myself) and stopping at the store. I did test things out and I think part of the reason it gets harder is I breathe through my nose at first, but eventually I forget and breathe through my mouth (which is my normal state), and from there it gets bad really fast.

It's my problem with sleeping as well, I can breathe through my nose and be ok even with a wall 2 feet away, but not if I breathe through my mouth.

Gonna do research on this cause it's pretty strange, there shouldn't be that big of a difference, and also, I don't seem to be able to naturally breathe through my nose, I have to conciously think about it.

I have heard the term "Mouth breather before" and it was derogatory lol.....I think....I may be one of those. Not sure why it's bad though.

Well crap, I just looked up mouth breathing and I have probably had that problem my whole life, but didn't have any doctors etc to treat it, least I didn't get cavities. Also had a ton of stress which is another big reason people breathe through their mouths.

Still doesn't identify why I have a hard time breathing through my mouth when something is in front of it, but....it might just be that most people naturally breathe through their noses when wearing a mask and since I naturally revert to breathing through my mouth, I end up having problems that everyone would have if they were also breathing through their mouths.

Wish I had an actual doctor who I could communicate with on this issue, I really need to switch doctors, but at least reading up on it, it says if i conciously force myself to breathe through my nose during the day (which i'm doing right now) that may help eventually.

Course if I stop thinking about it, I'll stop doing it. Maybe I need to like tape my mouth shut or something.

There's still moisture in people's breath in Arizona. The transmission range is going to be lessened compared to a more humid environment, since those droplets will dry up faster, but the exact difference is pretty hard to quantify and isn't likely to be enough to rely on, so that point isn't particularly relevant except to say that beachgoing isn't a great idea (high, sustained winds and higher humidity increase transmission range).

No that's actually false. Full protection is from specific masks.

Complete, 100% protection would indeed involve a full hazmat suit with a full-face SCBA (even then, that's not perfect, but it's close enough), yes, but nobody has ever suggested that wearing something more readily available to the average consumer provides perfect protection. Just that it's better than nothing, which is a claim that's both well substantiated and intuitively obvious.

Hypothetically, sure, but the vast, vast majority of people don't breathe like that by default. Relying on that as a protective measure would require people to pay conscious attention to their breathing at all times while in risky areas, which is actually quite a lot to expect of people and therefore wouldn't be overly reliable. The nose also isn't sealed off while breathing through the mouth (distinct from breathing through the nose, where the mouth does get sealed off), so even exhaling through the mouth, you're going to get some air coming out through the nose.

The only way to really make that idea work would be with some kind of external valve system that somehow prevented air from leaving the nose while exhaling while also preventing the person from breathing in any other way. At that point, you might as well just wear a normal mask that would be much simpler, cheaper, and provide better protection anyway.

The good place, that show had so many great lines.

Oh I forgot I replaced the one oreo from heaven line with one from Dracula.

The first one is from Dracula on netflix, the second is from the good place.

If I can fart thru underwear, long johns and a pair of jeans and still smell it, none of these cloth or paper masks are going to stop you from inhaling particles or expelling particles.

Came for the info, stayed for the poetry.
