It's basically a giant "fuck you" to the community. People have been wanting a Pokemon MMO or MOBA for years, and we end up getting mobile trash. Even go on the Pokemon board and search for Pokemon MMO or Pokemon MOBA and you will see suggestions miles better than this will ever be.

Also the general hatred towards Tencent which is one of the least liked companies in the west, probably the least liked in gaming. Even suggestions that GF could be bought out by Tencent in the future.

Tencent's is a Chinese company that has its hands in lots of not only eastern companies but western game companies, most notably Epic, which they own 40%.

This is absolutely not going to do them any favors.

It's a way people let them know they don't support this right now. The only other way to do it currently is to post on social media the issue.

I'd imagine some are doing both, or at least hope so I guess.

So... blind hate for an unreleased game. That trailer was thoroughly uninformative about what to expect from the game beyond the fact that it's a MOBA and it offers cross-platform play between Switch and mobile. Sure, it probably won't be very good, but there was never any chance that any new Pokemon game would tick off more than a couple points on those unending lists of suggestions you reference given how absurdly numerous and specific they are. A Pokemon MOBA was only ever going to be a F2P cash-in made because people keep demanding the idea.

I'm more pissed off that main Pokemon games have been lackluster in terms of post-game content since Gens III-IV, when there is NO shortage of budget...

Get your main stuff straight, then go for all the little side projects. Unite looks fun IMO, even though I don't think I'll spend my own time playing it.

Gaming companies have gotten pretty bad at the hype balance anymore it feels like, but to be fair a small part of that has to do with expectations.

It feels like one part they seem to think that as much hype as possible is good, when in reality overhype is going to build up expectations too high. One part people overhyping themselves, sometimes despite all the faults of companies we do expect too much or overhype something ourselves with little to no reason.

The only streamer I watch once streamed a bunch of bootleg Chinese Pokemon games. They were absolute trash, and this looks like one of those... but this one's backed by the Pokemon Company.

This is definitely a big factor. I haven't been keeping up with Pokemon stuff lately but apparently there was a showing before this that the Unite trailer could've followed, instead of being its own thing.

I don't know that that holds true for spin-offs.

This is 100% aimed at the Chinese market though, who apparently love mobile MOBAs, so ultimately it will make money regardless of what the western market thinks of it.

As someone who does not play or particularly follows MOBAs, all I see is LoL with Pokmon models. I can understand that people would expect better than that from Nintendo/.

They've made over 3 billion on Pokemon Go so it was pretty much a given they were going to push out another mobile game.

I bought the double pack. It was good for the 3 moths until GameFreak opened HOME. Same thing that killed Gen 6 for me too.

Not buying the DLC, at least not until Crown Tundra.

The thing is, the fans that actually pay attention to news sources to even know about "gaming controversy" are a small fraction of the market.

Most of the market are general consumers who didn't even know a controversy existed, saw advertising for the game, and bought it because of that.

For reference, even Battlefront 2, which caused such a fuss to reached mainstream news and many countries looked into labeling loot boxes as gambling, sold over 9 million copies, and was a huge financial success. Given, it was a big failure to EA, which wanted it to be a endless pay to win, loot box money printing machine for years to come, and worse, actually got the people looking into loot boxes as a problem.

Tencent is behind Path of Exile and it's one of the greatest Free games the world has ever seen.

I think that is more you are bored of the game and blame Tencent for everything, how many games can keep interest for anywhere close to 3k hours. The core gameplay is exactly the same you still can't buy power Tencent hasn't made buyers get better drops or have better gear/skills. Call me when Tencent makes a bunch of new content then locks it behind a $29.99 paywall. I still think the game is great and it's easily one of the best Diablo style games ever made.

Every complaint lobbied at most F2P MMO's is pretty much not present in PoE.

I also will point out from the speech he gives they were seeing massive player retention issues early on in PoE, so they had to re-design the way they released content to help that. No game wants to lose tons of players over time, and in the first few years of PoE they were.

I mean, even I have thought of some cool/better (to some people) ideas for an MMO Pokemon game. But I also wont hate it just because. Also, like adjl said, it was never going to hit ALL, or even most, of what people wanted. WAY too many different ideas on what people wanted...
