If you're close with the parents and don't have to worry about pissing them off go to the store and find something you don't think the parents would buy (like something messy, noisy, annoying, etc). That's what I use to do when my god-daughter was little and she always wanted to play with my gifts 1st.

My suggestion is that you make an effort to learn what piques her interest (ask her parents, see what she takes an interest in when you're around her) and buy her a gift along those lines. Don't assume that she won't be interested in certain 'things' because she's a girl (I've seen girls play with Lego blocks and boys play with dolls), every kid is as different as every adult as far as interests are concerned.

PS I understand about the Switch since, once, my niece asked for a PS2 which I wouldn't buy for my daughter at the time. My answer was the same as the answer you gave to Sonicplys.

I simply tried warning you that $200 was going to come off as an odd thing to give to a coworker's daughter, 7 years old-- that you have no relation to-- and you have somehow turned this into a thing about Trump.

Why don't you give her your unicorn bicycle helmet and keep the $200 for yourself?

Overlooking that I'm not sure RedPixel has any overt politics (at least none unrelated to conspiracy theories), that's a bizarre chain of stretches and faulty logic. Many of the nation's highest earners don't have much in the way of education, the nation's poorest citizens are as likely to vote blue as red (well, unless you count urban-poor as having more because they can get bigger government checks), and you can't exactly look at what people earn to figure out their politics. And those kinds of massive leaps you're making aren't exactly associated with people of high (or even moderate) intelligence or education.

Lil_Bit83 posted...

More likely happy parents of the kid, because the kid won't see much of the money. That's one reason why I always give actual gifts to kids.

Depends on how close you are with the parents, or you all are very comfortable financially. $200 does feel excessive otherwise, unless you know something we don't. Like the parents need grocery money.

I mean ngl first thing I thought when I read what he put was how does that stop a parent from spending it?

If a parent wants to spend it they'll just make the kid fork it over when they go home, if not before. Heck, with younger kids most parents hold onto it even if they aren't spending it.

There's literally nothing someone can do to prevent a parent from robbing their kid if they want to.
