Ogres in Ogre Battle 64 use hammers.

With their strength and size they probably could wrestle down the Giants in Skyrim... but they use clubs.

...

A hammer does not actually add more leverage to your strikes or anything, it's just that you can greatly lighten the weapon/tool by putting the relevant mass all in one place. - but since STRENGTH isn't the limiting factor here, why use a hammer when you can use a club?

Since the weight is at the end of the hammer, you're getting more kinetic energy out of a swing compared to a club.

I'm partial to the pollaxe myself. It has a hammer on one side, an axe on the other, and the tip is a spear, and there is usually a spike on the butt end as well. The haft can also be used as a quarterstaff to block an opponent's attacks.

Clubs (and by proxy, things like bats or batons as well) are the quintessential "no training" strength weapon. You pick one up and swing. It's why they're so common for brutish characters in fiction and games (especially since you can "make" one just by picking up a nearby tree trunk, even if you're too primitive to actually craft anything).

Hammers, depending on how they're designed, require more skill, and channel more of the force of the impact into a single point. Some hammers are literally designed to crack armor open, other hammers work as combination weapons (like the lucerne hammer, which is sort of a cross between hammer, polearm, and hook that can smash, spear, or grab an opponent that gives you more versatility in combat).

So which weapon you pick tends to say a lot about the culture of the group you're giving them to.

Personally, if I was a giant with tons of strength, I'd probably just go the D&D route and throw giant boulders at people and crush them at a distance. Or have a massive bow where the strength of my draw can literally fire telephone poles through buildings. I'm not a huge fan of "Grr, Hulk smash" stupidity in combat, and strength alone kind of sucks once you can bring tactics into play.

A hammer greatly increases striking power

A club is useful if you're not necessarily looking for additional striking power and just want something that can hit a wider area.

And usually giants rely on clubs less because they're effective weapons and more because they're something simple to make. And a lot of things will be effective regardless if you're a giant. However, 9 ft tall isn't gigantic so you'd want something more effective than a club, especially if you're fighting armored opponents

Where the weight is distributed on a weapon impacts its ability to be swung effectively, ease of use, and striking power. It's not simply about "lightening the weapon." And keep in mind that weapon weight increases fatigue so even if it's a weapon a person can use with ease at first, their ability to continue to use that weapon effectively can go down over time. And giants, etc, are typically nowhere near as strong as you might assume.

A weapon is a force multiplier and the better a weapon is weighted, the more effectively it can use somebody's strength.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people don't just go with the obvious. Throwing or rolling a boulder is going to do more damage to a greater number of opponents while reducing damage to oneself.

A reboot of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is on Netflix - only 1 season so far (in Canada at least) and it's pretty decent.

Especially when, in D&D, giants also have biologically inborn spacial awareness that allows them to always hit the exact perfect arc with any throw to hit a target. They're literally designed by their god to throw rocks.

That's when you throw trees, houses, or people.
