Do you agree with this stingy vampire?

White House National Economic Director, Larry Kudloser says that American businesses should be PROTECTED from "false lawsuits" by removing liability if employees or customers get COVID-19 at their businesses!!

He said they must be shielded from lawsuits in order to give them the confidence to reopen while states and cities ensure safety standards are met

The idea of removing liability for businesses was also pushed by Trump when they published an open letter calling covid-19 exposure liability the "largest area of concern for the overall business community" and that businesses should not be subject to the same Occupational Safety and Health Admin standards regarding supply and training

It comes as staff in food processing plants that are now shut down due to an outbreak of covid-19 in the facility as detail of the failure of their companies to provide adequate equipment as more than 40 grocers have died

He voiced his support to remove the liability on Squawk Box and says that you have to give that business confidence that if something happens it's not their fault and it's the fault of the disease

He's referring to May as the transition month where he expects most states to re-open but is worried of what will happen if there is widespread covid-19 cases when that happens and he wants to ensure the business community is well protected where it is up to the american people who go out and protect themselves

Do you agree with this stingy vampire?

If youre a customer how would you even be able to prove that you got it from one business over another, or even that you didnt pick it up from a random passerby on the street?

This is what I'm thinking, there's no way to prove where you got it, this is pointless

At this point, it's pretty hard to get that kind of precision, but that's basically epidemiologists' job in a nutshell. Find out everywhere the person went in the past two weeks, contact and test anyone else that was present in those places, and connect the dots to isolate the most likely point of origin. If the people in question are doing a good job of isolating, it's still reasonably possible (if I develop it right now, for example, I can be fairly certain I picked it up in one of three locations, one of which is my own apartment building), but you're correct that it's going to become pretty much impossible to tell once businesses and people start returning to their normal lives.

Now, what you can do is conduct inspections to identify businesses that aren't following appropriate safety protocols and fine them for it. That accomplishes basically the same thing (even if it is conclusively determined that a customer or employee picked it up in a certain business, if that business is exercising due diligence to prevent the spread, they won't be found liable) without the need to pin a specific case on that failure.

If they fear lawsuits more than they fear infecting their employees and/or customers and by proxy their families, then they deserve no protection.

Customer? No. No way to prove accuratly enough that you got it from them and they made the decision to be a customer there instead of staying home.

Employees? Absolutely. If your work did not provide adequate protection they should absolutely be held liable for putting you in a dangerous position.

Do other epidemics get the same treatment? Did people sue when they got the flu? How would the country handle 100 million lawsuits simultaneously?

So it's just a PSA that your negligence is not their fault so businesses feel safer to restart promptly in uncertain times.
