i didn't change anything. parenthesis were implied but apparently none of you knew that, case in point.
No. It was not implied. You added it and changed the problem. If the problem was that, it would have been answered as such. It is not that though.

There is no interpretation in math. That's how math is math.

You didnt need to put also and either in the same sentence. Just having one of those in the sentence wouldve implied that he was as bad at math as Donald Trump. Having both of them in there is superfluous.

Here's a free online math textbook proving you wrong (check the exercises towards the bottom of the page):

Here's yet another very well known math resource proving you're wrong:

Also a really popular youtube channel which frequently covers much more advanced topics that doesn't seem to agree with you:

If that were the case then where are all the parentheses to clear up the confusion that is caused by mixing and matching division symbols and fractions.

Oh right this is just google math for trollin.

There isn't any confusion. No parenthesis there means there isn't parenthesis. Simple as that.

But we were told they were implied.

And the plural of parenthesis is parentheses. Anyone who is truly familiar with math would surely know that.

Sorry I didn't explain that part. X/2 * 4 is equal to 4 * X/2 by the Associative Property. The Associative Property states that if you have 3 numbers multiplied together, their product is the same regardless of the order. Since Division is really just Multiplication backwards it works with division too, at least in this instance. Then I forget the name of the property but a * b/c = (a * b) / c which is what I did in that step to group 4 and X together divided by 2.
So if I'm understanding correctly

Since we need to go left to right and since we can't multiply or divide with x we need to use associative property and rearrange the order so we can go left to right instead of just skipping over x/2 and going straight to 2*4 which would be 8 giving us x/8

So we're using associative property to keep the left to right order in check?

Its 16 how the fuck are a bunch of 30 year olds arguing about this??

This.

82(2+2)
2+2 is done first because parentheses
82(4)
Next is 82 because M+D in PEMDAS is obeyed from left to right (same with A+S)
4(4)
Last is 4*4
16

I think the reason people are coming up with a solution of 1 is because they're forgetting M+D and A+S in PEMDAS are grouped together. You don't multiply first before you do dividing; you do them together from left to right, whichever happens to come first. When they reach the 82(4) step, they do 2*4 first, because they think multiplication steps are supposed to come before division steps, but this is incorrect.

Theyre doing it because nobody uses a after the third grade. Youll notice the OP didnt bother including that bit anywhere but the title.

years of failing algebra in school and suddenly the associate property makes sense.

go figure. Explains why I kept getting confused because nobody ever explained it like you did. Numbers just kept jumping to the other side and I'd get lost. I also half suspect I am a victim of the "multiplication first" teaching not "multiplication and division are the same step" because I swear that's what I remember hearing, but then again I failed algebra and have no clue how I passed it in college. Teachers would say associative property and leave it at that. Heck I think that's why half of my high school and college algebra classmates failed.

So is there an instance where you wouldn't use the associative property since you said:

This keeps happening because it's an ambiguous question designed to troll people

Oh I know, I already pointed that here, facebook, and twitter a couple years ago when people first started debating this (think it was when kids started coming home with that common core shit and parents were getting scared)

I just come in for a good laugh now.

Question though, how come nobody ever does this for shit like the quadratic formula? Plenty of ways to fuck that up if you dont do it in the right order...
