How many of you guys have been idled from work due to COVID-19? Is your employer paying you for the time that'll be missed?

Our company is quite stubborn. They've reduced overtime and regular hours but they won't shut down until they're forced to. They should since more than 50 people work each shift and we're in New York where the confirmed cases are climbing rapidly.

The company laid off 250ish "non essential" employees earlier this week, that's probably the max they can before it starts impacting the bottom line and that's the last thing they want.

Luckily I'm cross trained in everything from store manager to mobile tech so I'll probably be one of the last to go, if at all. Unless someone at our location catches Corona...

Nope. Still delivering pizzas

I don't mind it really. It's a small restaurant owned by one guy. I obviously don't know how much money he has saved up, but it's probably not enough to give us all decent money while making no money at all. I'd rather have a job and get sick than not get sick and lose my job.

Officially closed as of last Tue and it's set to be closed until a week from Saturday

I wont' be surprised if that winds up getting extended though seeing as how I work at a movie theater and 3/4 of the customers are morons who sacrifice their well-being to see a movie

May as well stay closed anyway since all the huge spring/summer movies got delayed like Mulan, Black Widow and Fast 9

Without those we'll have to get really lucky and hope we get a limited release that's a hit or wind up replaying older movies

Half of the office staff is working from home at any given time, but all the production staff is here as normal. I've heard that we are considered an essential service and cannot be shut down, but I'm not 100% on that.

Pretty much. All non-essential personnel are working remotely now. I work for a small business, so we only had about 15 people at most in the office at any time, but even we went ahead with it. I lucked out since I was already putting in about half of my hours in from home, so it won't be a massive change. I feel bad for my mom though. She works in a retirement home, so she's been running herself ragged with having to take every possible precaution at work and home, since the residents there are obviously at the highest risk. And not to mention, she's had to work late every day for the past 2 weeks, and who knows how much longer that'll continue.

Thats true, as well... Though, some people may be able to move, depending on stuff. Like the people still working. Plus, I assume after its over, they may not want to wait to get them. Or have to stand in insanely long lines to get stocked up again... maybe...

I'm a first grade teacher in an area where schools have been closed. It's... weird. I'm used to breaks for summer and for various week breaks. This doesn't feel like that. It was sudden and unexpected. The announcement came on one of the three teacher work days of the year, which means our students weren't even in class that day. We couldn't prepare them at all.

Email groups have indicated a whole bunch of us feel disconnected and miss each other. The nature of this means it doesn't have the comfortable routine feel a break does.

And now... we are apparently moving to distance learning. With *elementary school kids.* Its bizarre. We now have to set up online classrooms, get apps working to route our school phone number through cell or Google voice (think I'll go with google voice), make sure we get chromebooks to all the families without them, etc. I'm glad we are doing something, since it sounds like the closure may be extended, but teaching first grade remotely is going to be really weird. On the positive side, they are only doing Mon-Thurs class with Fridays for teacher development, planning, collaboration, staff meetings, etc. And the last hour of each school day is also planning time. It's too bad kids aren't getting as much learning, but they are giving us plenty of time to figure out how to do this and adapt each day so it's better than the last.

Strange times we live in.

Wow get this, the general manager of our division just emailed us about this order from the governor saying that we should still come in, because another part of our company...in a different state... manufactures semiconductors which is considered essential. Oh well I think I'm gonna ask my boss to just WFH anyway. I don't get why they're so insistent on staying open, we can easily WFH

Executive order has been issued directing shelter in place (aka don't leave your house) and shutting down all businesses that are not identified as "essential" (which has some rather ridiculous exemptions).

The Bay area has already been on shelter in place for a couple of days. Apparently the first place in the country to implement it according to articles I've read. Then again, that was where it was worst in California. As it expands, the rest of the state sheltered too.

No official announcement yet from our boss. We deal with the material handling/storage industry (i.e. storage racks, shelving units, cantilever, gondolas, etc.) and our clients are typically warehouses and retail stores. Think some folks in management might feel that is technically enough to lump us along with the other "essential" industries. I guess so long as the doors are kept open, we'll still come to work.

Today was supposed to have been a normal days work, turned up, told not to bother, stopped behind with the guy I work with for a drink, then learned there's now at least 14 days before I can go back to work... Thankfully though my employer wants both of us back so I think we qualify for that scheme the government's rolling out that pays for staff unable to work due to Covid-19 shutting down work places.
