hahaha ok bro

I cook for a living. I'm too good to burn things since it only takes paying attention to the task at hand to not burn.

burn? like burn black, or just overcook a little? can't even think of a time when I've outright burned something as an adult.

I don't think burning something or not is about skill exactly, it's more absent-mindedness or not paying attention. to really burn something you have to forget about it. as a child or teen, that was definitely a common occurrence, but as a supposedly responsible adult I make sure not to do stupid things like that.

and then, depending on how extreme or not "burning" is, some examples that may or may not count could include:
- singeing microwave popcorn? I did that once a few years ago.

- overcooking fried eggs? if you cook the eggs before the hashbrowns, the eggs get cold since it takes so much longer to cook hashbrowns. if you cook the hashbrowns first, the frying pan is too hot for the eggs. but I wouldn't really call that "burnt", they're just a bit rough on the outside

- overcooking chicken? trying to get the exact right cooking time and temperature on my oven, I did get it a bit dry the first time, but only slightly.

- I tried putting olive oil on chicken while it baked once, that was a bad idea, made a lot of smoke. not exactly "burning" though, the chicken was fine.

- sometimes when you make those pasta meal things, if they have milk in it, they can literally go from not boiling to boiling over in like 2 seconds. that sort of does burn when it goes under the burner and makes a mess. haven't done that in a long time though.

I don't. I'm more likely to undercook than overcook. That being said, not burning something doesn't necessarily mean it's good. There are many ways to not know how to cook without burning something...

Burning to the point of being inedible? Pretty much never. The most recent time I can remember is burning a caramel 2-3 years ago, and I'm not even sure that counts because caramels are so much more merciless than just about anything else one can cook. Cooking things a bit further than I'd like or having some burnt bits stuck to the bottom of the pot/pan? Happens occasionally. That's just how cooking goes, especially working in a small kitchen where attempting to multitask often results in small delays and distractions as I shuffle things around to make room to work.

I do, part-time while I finish my last semester of pastry school. I did overbake a tray of shortbreads a few months back because I got caught up in doing other things and neglected to set a timer to remind me that I needed to check on them in a minute, but again, that'd more qualify for the "suboptimally overcook" level of burning rather than the "this is inedible" level (though they were too far gone to be sellable).

Only when I try new recipes, or use ingredients I'm not familiar with (not every time in these scenarios, just that's when I will burn something typically)

Occasionally, I'll burn something in my toaster, but only when I'm preoccupied with something else on the stove or whatever

I can't think of a single time that I burned something aside from the time that the microwave at work broke and kept going after it was supposed to shut off. I've known how to cook since I was, like, six. Even overcooking is pretty rare for me to the point I can't think of the last time I did that either.

~10% of the time.

Living alone pretty much forces you to make your own meals or get takeout/fastfood (which is unhealthy and pricey).

Screwing up and/or burning your food means you have to either eat the resulting disaster or go hungry. That's enough incentive to get it right the first time.
