Some combination of the last two options, as I do repeat intentionally down to the name for certain compatible settings and such, but if I can't make something close I won't repeat so it tends to be more the last option (which I voted for)

I just pick options that I think look cool usually. In a game with less customization I'll often name characters after somebody else they look like. In a game where I make several characters (like, say, a wrestling game) I'll usually make one for myself.

Guys, you're missing the point!
You're not creating a character based on you. You're creating a character based on you, but better! But yeah, first character is a better me. After that it's whatever I think looks cool/cute/hot. If it is a character I am making and not one that was already established, I make characters who act as I would in the situation. The character may not look like me, but the personality I impart in them makes them basically an idealized version of myself.
I find that the only way I can play a dick/evil bastard is if the character is already established. The one sort of exception is the Saints Row series. --- Congrats to the BYIG Guru Winner, Advokaiser *slurps yakisoba* *nods* *nods* ... Copied to Clipboard!

I tend to make the same choices in a game that I would as a person, but that's mostly just out of not having a lot of options between 'good guy' and 'total dick' - in pen-and-paper roleplaying games I have a lot more versatility in my characters' personalities which isn't really something I can convey in most video games

I can immerse myself in a character without it being me. That's what role-playing means. Hell when I make a character I try to make a consistent character that isn't me in the dialogue choices and crap which I feel helps with immersion not hurts, since me being in this world setting makes a lot less sense than a random fantasy character that I made up that fits the setting being there.

i've often been a random redheaded chick, though it differs on the game.
general principle of might as well see someone i like on the screen. occasionally will be the dude and there's some aspects which will be similar to me - long hair if an option - but still looks different. though let's face it, character creators either look like ass or are heavily skewed towards playing a girl. --- "Maybe it's a tentacle, molesting the planet itself. - Aschen Brodel. ... I've had this conversation a few times with my friends who play DnD.
For some people, immersion and role playing come much easier when the character is similar to themself. Think of it this way: you're already in a world entirely different from your own, (magic everywhere, or in the distant future, or on a different planet, etc.) so it's not as if there's a shortage of room to roleplay or exercise imagination if the character is just a carbon copy of yourself. It can be more of a burden or hindrance to have to imagine also existing fundamentally differently (as an orc, or a space alien, or what have you) on top of that. Just being yourself but in a different world can be more than enough. I'm in that group. If I play fantasy games I'll often create a human or very human-like character when roleplaying is prevalent. I can see how the same concept could translate to immersion in a video game. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I make a non-me character specific to whatever game im playing. Theres definitely specific wells I tend to go back to (I do a blonde pompadour like Lucas has pretty often), but its always a completely new person in each game.
the only time I do a character remotely like me is if the character is legitimately meant to be an avatar of myself, so like... a Mii or maybe a custom Tony Hawk skater.
