Another one that was popular (especially for those who were poor) was potato chip sandwiches (often with mustard as well). Peanut butter (very thin layer) sandwiches were a norm, or sandwiches with one slice of bologna etc. I mean, alot of people just ate half a loaf of bread (which you got for $1) a day and called it. School lunches (I went to mostly schools in the projects etc as a kid) were pretty close to that, and what was worse I couldn't eat a few of the regular meals. I couldn't even be in the cafeteria when they served egg salad, I couldn't eat the melted american cheese sandwiches. Thank god they didnt' spend extra money to make the burgers with cheese on them, so I would save up my tickets on egg/cheese etc days, and get an extra sloppy joe, hamburger/hotdog etc on the days that I could eat them. It REALLY sucked if an egg/cheese day happened on a friday, or the absolute worst was when two of them would happen in a row right before the weekend. It's one of the reasons I looked like an ethiopian as a kid and my brother looked relatively normal (even though he was 2 years younger than me). Once I got old enough to work that all changed though and food has been super important to me ever since then. I was in 4th grade when I started being able to make money myself, so I skipped the entire year of school (first time we actually stayed anywhere over 3 months so they just figured we moved again). I remember the first time I had money and went into mc donalds. I bought something like 10 hamburgers and it was freaking heaven.
