Where companies fake authenticity and transparency, not as an authentic show of support for people who love [Franchise] but as a cynical marketing gimmick that will lull people into a false sense that these giant companies actually give a shit about them, when they really only care about them on the promise that they give them money.

Im still absolutely sure that original Sonic design was made to incite internet rage, because thats the quickest way to get as many eyeballs on your products as possible

This is a bad take

Redoing CGI is expensive and a lot of promotional material featuring the old design had already been sent out and had to be recalled

Courting Internet attention failed spectacularly when it came to selling tickets for Snakes on a Plane.

The funny thing about the Internet is, everyone is going to have a hyperbolic opinion about pretty much everything, but when it actually comes time to put your money where your mouth is, suddenly everyone vanishes.

For all the outrage about how terrible the first trailer was and how many people have praised the second trailer for listening to fans or improving things, I have a sneaking suspicion the movie is still going to tank hard. Because none of the people who've been posting about it are going to bother going to see it regardless.

I don't know; many people I've seen speaking favorably about the new trailer have mentioned planning to see it now to show positive response for taking feedback. That's beside many people just plain liking it.

Yes, and plenty of people praised Snakes on a Plane and talked about how they were going to see it.

And then they didn't.

It's easy to say "This looks awesome, can't wait to see it" or other things that imply you're going to watch. But when the moment comes to actually pay money and go out to a theater people suddenly don't care so much.

Trying to cultivate that sort of Internet hype train in the hopes that it will translate into business seems kind of futile. No matter how often people are willing to leap fully on board with memes, they rarely seem to follow through in any meaningful way.

In this day and age, "I'm going to see it" usually means "I am going to wait until I can see it on a streaming service" or "I am going to watch the pirated version". Not a lot of people are going to go see a movie in theaters just because a company changed some bad CGI into better CGI.

They're not going to have a bad CGI design for a trailer without having a bunch of the movie done already.

How much of the actual movie did you actually see with the old design? What op is saying still makes more sense.

If the intention was like PK says, then there was no CGI to redo. Only bad CGI Sonic design for the trailer.

Yeah, no. It doesn't work like that. They're not going to have a bad CGI design for a trailer without having a bunch of the movie done already.

Theyre saying what if the original trailer was fake and the good design was what they had all along. I dont necessarily believe it but it isnt that far-fetched.

I cant agree with you more, TC.

No way did they redo all the CGI in the time they supposedly did. Im sure we have at least one person in here that works in the industry and can attest to it.

Well know for sure when the DVD is out and it doesnt have the option to watch the original Sonic in it. If its legit, given that they spent so much money, itll have 2 options. Like a directors cut. Maybe in a deluxe version.

But that wont happen because the only original Sonics we saw was the few scenes in the commercial. The commercial which created all the backlash. Even the backlash seemed fabricated.

One way to prove it is when you see the reactions of the fixed Sonic. People are like, Meh. So bad Sonic = OMG WTF!?!?!? THEY DESTROYED MY CHILDHOOD. And good Sonic = Meh. I might go see it.

It's too late for that.

There are already tons of people who feel attachment and allegiance to companies and corporations.

They mix up liking an IP with liking the company that owns it.

I think its both real and manufactured. Sonic has close connection to the community and Im sure they took feedback heart. Also, theres a good chance some higher approved the ugly realistic Sonic because it would fit better. We have leaked promotional material still using the design.

Now, Im sure they had already worked on a prototype Sonic design. 4 months to completely rework a CGI and edit in the film? From scratch? Hell no. From an already made base? Maybe.

Given, even though Sonic no longer looks like a horror monster, it's still a kids movie filled with dumb jokes.

It's guaranteed to make more money than before, if it was worth the cost of changing Sonic, we'll have to wait an see.

It amazes me movie execs green lit the original "realistic" design, shows how little the movie studios actually have any idea what's good.
