yeah the more I think about it, the more forgettable this movie becomes

kind of a waste of a joaquin phoenix performance

The mostly positive reaction here and Seph's negative reaction are making me real excited to get to this. Work and planning have kept me away from this, have to find time.

Tbh for me it was less like "this movie is fantastic" and more like "this actor is fantastic, the movie is good but I didn't like it that much because it's too depressing".

Call me childish if you want, but I like fiction to give me some kind of positive emotion at the end of it.

But I also appreciate how it tells something about real life, and the fact people are discussing that is positive imo. Why is the saddest blockbuster of the year the one that connects best with the real world?

This is a great film and if anyone thinks Joker is a great role model or an icon to be followed in this movie, that is both unbelievably stupid and sad, but also entirely on them.

What's also interesting about the response to this film is that after the initial rapturous praise there was a large backlash, and now we're already on the backlash to the backlash and everybody loves the film again. After a whopping two days of release!

Really? You know when Rock and I feel the same way about a movie that it has nothing to do with politics.

Thomas Wayne's entire existence in this movie is pretty pointless.

I actually enjoyed it as the only interpretation of the character I've seen that doesn't depict him as Saint Billionaire the Perfect. Dirtying him up a bit just made sense for this movie imo, even if his and Bruce's presence was a little fan-servicey to tie the movie into Batman's origins.

This movie was disappointing. I won't call it bad-- was a unique watch that I don't mind having seen. But it was disappointing.

Phoenix as Joker was very good (though I'll still take Ledger) but like yeah I dunno it was a bit too slow a burn and felt like it needed a bit more to it in the end. It felt like a sequence of increasingly tense random events that built to a climax and then immediately cut out before it was able to breathe. I was expecting it to go another 20 minutes or so.

I almost think the movie would be better without the DC tie-in to be honest. Just remove the Gotham and Wayne elements, which were pretty unnecessary, and you have a pretty solid psychological thriller and I probably go in expecting less.

I'm a very casual fan. I remember Batman Begins and maybe the 1992 cartoon, but from my recollections, Bruce Wayne's father was depicted as a benevolent saint who had nothing to do with the city's depressed state and only had its best interest at heart.

I view the movie as a cautionary tale and I think it makes it pretty clear that while Joker's motives are very clear they're still unjustified.

So yeah, RLM probably did a better job of expressing some of my feelings about this movie, although Mike was definitely higher on it than Jay was (and there was no recommendation at the end like a standard HitB).

just saw it and have pretty mixed feelings

obviously Joachin was great and especially the last ~30 minutes or so when he really starts Jokering it up were super tense and compelling

but also a lot of it felt... gratuitous? over the top? Just so many non-Joker people were so ridiculously shitty and stuff went so wrong for him that it felt like too much.
Two different groups of random men knock this guy down and start kicking him within like one week! Thomas Wayne literally goes on tv to call poor people (or just protestors? I dont totally remember) clowns. Thats way too on the nose!

i dunno... there were parts where I was very onboard and then parts where I was not buying into it

oh but big shout out to whoever wrote Robert Deniros jokes. That was such good fake Jay Leno material... I was so happy when he told the set-up for his super rats joke and I guessed the punchline immediately.

oh also was something wrong with kid Bruce Waynes brain? Why is he letting some weird clown man touch him through his gate? No way that kid grows up to be the genius Batman we know.

also also this is the minorest thing, but I wish one of Deniros guests had been Basil Karlo

I finally got around to it. I enjoyed it, but I probably won't think too much about it in a week or so.

I agree with the comments that the secondary characters didn't seem to do much. The eventual victims seem to be one-note jerks, aside from the big clown guy who seems more two-faced than straight-up jerk.

With all that said, Joaquin Phoenix delivered a standout performance. I think that the fears that people would get violent come from the fact that his performance was relatable on some level. Who isn't afraid that someone is going to take a crap on an awkward or embarrassing moment?

Entirely true.
And loved the movie for it.
Doesn't particularly make sense tied into the Batman mythos, though they've left themselves a LOT of room for it.

But his acting is bloody brilliant.
