I was thinking of Mr. Brightside coming into the topic. Oh well.

Of the poll, Bring Me to Life. The mainstream crossover appeal was immense with that song. I think How You Remind Me, It's My Life, and I Hate Everything About You might also be in contention here.

I had the poll narrowed down to about 20, and I actually had those 3 on the short list! There were a lot of great choices from those years. "Like a Stone" by Audioslave was my 11th place cut for the poll. These aren't my song preferences by the way. I just was trying to list things that I still hear played a lot today.

I know, right! It almost makes me want to run a contest/tournament of this kind of music now! But I've never run one, and I also don't know how much interest there actually would be.

Ahhh, Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out just misses the cut due to being a January 2004 release.

With that in mind, I voted for Seven Nation Army. In addition to its crossover success and ubiquity on alternative radio, it's a mainstay within sports.

"all my life" is the definitive radio rock song of this era and seems like a huge oversight - but maybe it's less popular in the states than in europe? half of these songs i have never heard on a radio ever - i know three doors down especially never made it outside of the US, and it's funny to me to think of Disturbed or Papa Roach at the same level. I heard both "In The End" and "Bring me to Life" on the radio today, which makes them leading candidates, but I can't shake the fact that Seven Nation Army was not only everywhere on release, it's taken its place as a sports chant and is well established there now. Leaning towards that.

I feel like Seven Nation Army is the one that stands the test of time the best while Kryptonite is the one youd play in a flashback on a tv show to let the viewer know its 2001.

Speaking of iconic RHCP songs, I was very disappointed when I saw them a few years ago and they didn't play Under the Bridge, which I think is pretty clearly their most iconic.

(They had Trombone Shorty opening for them, though, which made up for it).

Not entirely wrong. Seven Nation Army is chanted in EU soccer/football clubs on the daily, "Kryptonite" reminds me that I listened to rock stations in 1999. It's those Linkin Park votes that worry me... "because in the end it doesn't even matter"... "if I slit mt wrist, which is what the audience mostly thought."

This is definitely a case where the answer is dependent on where you are in the world. Basically echoing what Steiner said, I've never heard the first three songs on the poll played on the radio in the UK, even on stations specialising in rock. 'Seven Nation Army' on the other hand is probably the most ubiquitous rock song of that time frame; possibly even of the century. It's just never gone away since release.

It's also worth noting that there is a lot of regional variation in what was popular. Songs that got constant airplay for me growing up were considered obscure by people in other parts of the country

Yeah, I totally know Foo Fighters and could name a dozen big hits, but I don't think that was one of them here.

My vote was easily for Seven Nation Army, as it's the big one that actually lasted beyond its own era. That, Take Me Out, and Hey Ya feel like the decade defining songs to me as far as both initial success and lasting impact.

It somewhat depends on the rock station I suppose. Some stations don't dabble in nearly as heavy of rock as others do. I know the rock stations that did play Disturbed, played it non-stop back then, and still play it a lot today.

Other rock songs that I think would be key for this era are "Hate To Say I Told You So," "Maps," and literally any of Coldplay's hits from their first two albums - but it looks like you mainly kept to harder rock, though I'd still argue "Hate To Say I Told You So" for that zone.

I basically never listen to rock music by choice ever and neither did any of family members so I haven't even heard of most of these songs and I have no idea what nine of them actually sound like, though I suppose it's possible I'd recognize some if I gave them a listen.

But I definitely know In the End. The world refused to let me not hear it.
