Schools not providing free lunch for kids is absolutely insane. Why should kids be punished if their parents are poor?

Why should I be punished with higher taxes for the poor decisions of others?

Keep it in your pants if you cant afford the consequences

Yeah I'm not gonna dance for you. Whether or not the food was chucked in the trash, which absolutely is what's supposed to happen in food service when you take food back that has already been served, is not the only sticking point as to why this was handled poorly. Obviously the school agrees which is why the policy has been changed across the board.

There's nothing to dance about. You made a statement that you couldn't back up. You have no idea what they did with the food. The lunch lady might have ate it, it might have been donated to a homeless shelter, or maybe the kid never even touched the tray, and it was re-served, because this all happened while he was still in the food line.

Perhaps I just dont understand the American school system, but can people not just pack their kids a lunch instead. Seems like if you cant afford school provided lunches you should probably do that.

In some cases, if the kids don't eat at school, they don't eat at all. I saw a story on the Chicago school system and the superintendant said that was the reason that the schools there almost never close - even in the bitterest of winter.

Those dicks shouldn't be having kids if they have to eat at school only or go hungry that's ridiculous.

Again, another user 100% sure of a situation that he was not part of. No one in this school stated the food was thrown out. You have no idea if the kid even touched the food, or if the school has a basic food recycling policy.

Teach him early. Even better. You guys want to coddle children way too much, and you wonder why they can't make smart financial decisions about college when they turn 18?

I grew up poor. I missed lunch all the time. Often had to eat old, moldy food (ripped off the mold). Getting a McDonald's Happy Meal was considered a fucking treat. And you know how much college debt I ended up with? Zero. I was literally collecting coins since the first grade because I knew how valuable money was. Don't underestimate what kids are capable of.

wow, grampa. now can you tell us the story of how you had to walk eighteen miles to school with a hole in your shoe??

Schools waste $5 million a day in uneaten food. Here's how Oakland is reinventing the cafeteria

Fortunately, Nancy Deming, the school districts sustainability manager for custodial and nutritional services, is supervising the sorting line today. If youve started eating your fruit, it goes in the compost, she reminds the girl with a smile. If you havent taken a bite, it goes to Food Share. The girl glances at the plum, then carefully places it in the clear bin, from which students can take whatever unopened or unbitten foods they please. Anything left will either be offered the next day or donated to a local hunger-relief organization.

https://grist.org/article/schools-waste-5-million-a-day-in-uneaten-food-heres-how-oakland-is-reinventing-the-cafeteria/

USDA strongly encourages schools to donate leftover foods to appropriate nonprofit institutions provided this practice is not prohibited by State or local laws or regulations. Food donation has been a longstanding policy in all Child Nutrition Programs

Leftover food not suitable for human consumption can be used to feed animals or given to companies that convert food discards into commercial animal feed and pet food. Feeding waste food to livestock or having the food processed into animal feed can be a viable option for recycling food scraps and provides economic and environmental benefits for all involved.

There are many examples of food recycling. Another example, which I posted, is schools donating the food to farms to be used as food for animals, or using it as compost for the schools garden. This again, assumes that the kid even touched the food to begin with. If he didnt, it would have simply been given the next student in line.

Stop making statements as fact without proof. Its really simple. Your attempt at pretending that school recycling programs not in the exact city are irrelevant, is cute though. Do you not think Ohio has farms to use recycled food as compost or animal feed? LOL. Not to mention your blatant attempts to ignore the fact the kid may not have even touched the food to begin with.

Students have already achieved meaningful results at Loveland High School (Ohio). About 1,500 students and school staff eat lunch in the cafeteria each day. In just a few years, the school has reduced the number of bags of trash it produces each day during lunch from 60 to two. For this and other accomplishments, the school has been recognized as a zero-waste facility meaning it has cut its waste by more than 90% and named one of the nations first Green Ribbon schools.

It literally changes everything. If they are throwing away food instead of simply giving it to the kid, then that's a disgrace. However, if it is being donated, recycled or simply given to another student because it had not been touched, then that's a completely different story. You made an assumption, called it a fact and here we are.

If you just apologize to everyone, we can move on. People make mistakes, its ok.
